Metabolomics evaluation of the effects of green tea extract on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice

Green tea has a considerable amount of polyphenolic catechins and has been promoted to have beneficial effects on health including protective effects against oxidative ***(APAP) is a widely used analgesic drug which is usually safe at recommended therapeutic doses but overdose can cause acute liver *** studies explored the effects of green tea extract(GTE) on APAP-induced hepatotoxicity using UPLC /MS-and NMR-based metabolomic *** B6C3F1 mice were orally administered GTE under three scenarios either prior to or after a single dose of *** /MS and NMR were employed for metabolomics analysis of the biochemical changes in mice livers with GTE pretreatment 3 h or 3 d prior to APAP exposure or GTE exposure 6 h after *** upon the data,GTE given prior to APAP ameliorated the APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in a dose dependent manner whereas GTE given after APAP potentiated the *** belonging to multiple classes including but not limited to acylcarnitines,energy metabolism,bile acids,and lysoPCs were identified and *** metabolites were significantly altered by APAP exposure alone compared to *** pretreatment generally resulted in these metabolite levels returning to control levels or being less *** given after APAP,however,caused more changes in the metabolites over what was induced by APAP alone indicating more severe *** with biochemistry and histopathology results,the changes in liver metabolites indicated perturbations of fatty acid metabolism,energy metabolism,bile acids metabolism and phospholipids metabolism induced by APAP with differing effects on these metabolites depending upon the time of GTE *** results indicate that the time at which GTE was given highly influenced the severity of APAPinduced *** studies clearly highlight the need to understand the interactions between herbs and other dietary supplements with commonly used ove

An enhanced functional ability questionnaire(faVIQ) to measure the impact of rehabilitation services on the visually impaired

AIM: To develop a short,enhanced functional ability Quality of Vision(faVIQ) instrument based on previous questionnaires employing comprehensive modern statistical techniques to ensure the use of an appropriate response scale,items and scoring of the visual related difficulties experienced by patients with visual impairment. · METHOdS: Items in current quality-of-life questionnaires for the visually impaired were refined by a multi-professional group and visually impaired focus groups. The resulting 76 items were completed by 293 visually impaired patients with stable vision on two occasions separated by a month. The faVIQ scores of 75 patients with no ocular pathology were compared to 75 age and gender matched patients with visual impairment. ·RESULTS: Rasch analysis reduced the faVIQ items to 27. Correlation to standard visual metrics was moderate(r =0.32-0.46) and to the NEI-VFQ was 0.48. The faVIQ was able to clearly discriminate between age and gender matched populations with no ocular pathology and visual impairment with an index of 0.983 and 95% sensitivity and 95% specificity using a cut off of 29.·CONCLUSION: The faVIQ allows sensitive assessment of quality-of-life in the visually impaired and should support studies which evaluate the effectiveness of low vision rehabilitation services.

Sugarcane press mud modification of expansive soil stabilized at optimum lime content:Strength,mineralogy and microstructural investigation

This study attempted to investigate the potential of sugarcane press mud(PM) as a secondary additive in conjunction with lime for the stabilization of an expansive *** physico-mechanical properties of an expansive soil,such as plasticity,shrink-swell behavior,unconfined compressive strength(UCS),mineralogical and microstructural characteristics were *** expansive soil was stabilized at its optimum lime content(7%) for producing maximum strength,and was modified with four different quantities of PM in small dosages(0.25%-2%).Cylindrical soil samples,38 mm in diameter and 76 mm in height,were cast and cured for varying periods to evaluate the strength of the amended *** spent samples after strength tests were further used for determination of other *** test results revealed that PM modification led to a substantial improvement in 7-d strength and noticeable increase in 28-d strength of the lime-stabilized soil(LSS).The addition of PM does not cause any detrimental changes to the shrink-swell properties as well as plasticity nature of the stabilized soil,despite being a material of organic *** investigation revealed that the formation of calcium silicate hydrate(CSH) minerals,similar to that of pure lime stabilization with only the type of mineral varying due to the modification of PM addition,does not significantly alter the microstructure of the LSS except for superficial changes being noticed.

Inter-related and spatially variable climate change factors including sea level rise,increased storminess,altered precipitation regime and increasing temperature are impacting mangroves at re-gional *** review highlights extreme regional variation in climate change threats and impacts,and how these factors impact the structure of mangrove communities,their biodiversity and geo-morphological *** these factors interplay to determine spatially variable resiliency to climate change impacts,and because mangroves are varied in type and geographical location,these systems are good models for understanding such interactions at different *** level rise is likely to in-fluence mangroves in all regions although local impacts are likely to be more *** in the frequency and intensity of storminess are likely to have a greater impact on N and Central America,Asia,Australia,and East Africa than West Africa and *** review also highlights the nu-merous geographical knowledge gaps of climate change impacts,with some regions particularly understudied(e.g.,Africa and the Middle East).While there has been a recent drive to address these knowledge gaps especially in South America and Asia,further research is required to allow research-ers to tease apart the processes that influence both vulnerability and resilience to climate change.A more globally representative view of mangroves would allow us to better understand the importance of mangrove type and landscape setting in determining system resiliency to future climate change.

Evaluation of utility in shoulder pathology:Correlating the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Constant scores to the EuroQoL

AIM: To study whether health utility scores can be derived from shoulder-specific ***: Authors investigated two questions:(1) do the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons(ASES) score and the Constant score correlate with the EuroQo L(EQ-5d), a measure of health utility?(2) can the ASES and Constant scores be obtained from a complete study sample without bias? Thirty subjects with various shoulder diagnoses completed ASES, Constant, and EQ-5d instruments. Pearson correlations were calculated to assess the associations between EQ-5d score and ASES and Constant ***: The correlation between EQ-5d score and ASES score was 0.60(P d and Constant scores(P del containing ASES score, Constant score, age, and gender failed to adequately predict EQ-5d. Moreover, 25% of patients meeting the inclusion criteria did not complete the ASES questionnaire because they did not feel that specific questions, such as "do usual sport-list" and "throw ball overhand," applied to ***: Authors' results do not support the use of the ASES and Constant scores in predicting EuroQ ol health utility values. However, the Constant score was more suitable for this patient population because all patients were able to complete it.

The influence of tree transmissivity variations in winter on satellite snow parameter observations

The ability to correct for the influence of forest cover is crucial for retrieval of surface geophysical parameters such as snow cover and soil properties from microwave remote *** correction approaches to brightness temperatures for northern boreal forest regions consider forest transmissivity constant during ***,due to biophysical protection mechanisms,below freezing air temperatures freeze the water content of northern tree species only *** a consequence,the permittivity of many northern tree species decreases with the decrease of air temperature under sub-zero temperature *** results in a monotonic increase of the tree vegetation transmissivity,as the permittivity contrast to the surrounding air *** influence of this tree temperature-transmissivity relationship on the performance of the frequency difference passive microwave snow retrieval algorithms has not been *** ground-based observations and an analytical model simulation based on Mätzler’s approach(1994),the influence of the temperaturetransmissivity relationship on the snow retrieval algorithms,based on the spectral difference of two microwave channels,is characterized.A simple approximation approach is then developed to successfully characterize this influence(the RMSE between the analytical model simulation and the approximation approach estimation is below 0.3 K).The approximation is applied to spaceborne observations,and demonstrates the capacity to reduce the influence of the forest temperature-transmissivity relationship on passive microwave frequency difference brightness temperature.

The ability to map concentration in opaque mixtures under process-realistic conditions was a major innovation for the method and has had far reaching implications. Subsequent developments have enabled velocity information to be abstracted resulting in the ability to measure component flux and motion.

Impact of Varying Light and dew on Ground Cover Estimates from Active NdVI,RGB,and LidAR

Canopy ground cover(GC)is an important agronomic measure for evaluating crop establishment and early *** study evaluates the reliability of GC estimates,in the presence of varying light and dew on leaves,from three different ground-based sensors:(1)normalized difference vegetation index(NdVI)from the commercially available GreenSeeker®;(2)RGB images from a digital camera,where GC was determined as the portion of pixels from each image meeting a greenness criterion(i.e.,ðGreen−RedÞ/ðGreen+RedÞ>0);and(3)LidAR using two separate approaches:(a)GC from LidAR red reflectance(whereby red reflectance less than five was classified as vegetation)and(b)GC from LidAR height(whereby height greater than 10 cm was classified as vegetation).Hourly measurements were made early in the season at two different growth stages(tillering and stem elongation),among wheat genotypes highly diverse for canopy *** active NdVI showed the least variation through time and was particularly stable,regardless of the available light or the presence of *** addition,between-sample-time Pearson correlations for NdVI were consistently high and significant(PdAR and RGB showed greater variation across sampling times,and LidAR red reflectance was strongly influenced by the presence of *** times when the light was exceedingly low,correlations between GC from RGB and NdVI were consistently high(ranging from 0.79 to 0.92).The high reliability of the active NdVI sensor potentially affords a high degree of flexibility for users by enabling sampling across a broad range of acceptable light conditions.
