Effect of Horizontal Resolution on the Representation of the Global Monsoon Annual Cycle in AGCMs

The sensitivity of the representation of the global monsoon annual cycle to horizontal resolution is compared in three AGCMs： the Met Office Unified Model-Global Atmosphere 3.0; the Meteorological Research Institute AGCM3; and the Global High Resolution AGCM from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. For each model, we use two horizon- tal resolution configurations for the period 1998-2008. Increasing resolution consistently improves simulated precipitation and low-level circulation of the annual mean and the first two annual cycle modes, as measured by the pattern correla- tion coefficient and equitable threat score. Improvements in simulating the summer monsoon onset and withdrawal are region-dependent. No consistent response to resolution is found in simulating summer monsoon retreat. Regionally, in- creased resolution reduces the positive bias in simulated annual mean precipitation, the two annual-cycle modes over the West African monsoon and Northwestern Pacific monsoon. An overestimation of the solstitial mode and an underestimation of the equinoctial asymmetric mode of the East Asian monsoon axe reduced in all high-resolution configurations. Systematic errors exist in lower-resolution models for simulating the onset and withdrawal of the summer monsoon. Higher resolution models consistently improve the early summer monsoon onset over East Asia and West Africa, but substantial differences exist in the responses over the Indian monsoon region, where biases differ across the three low-resolution AGCMs. This study demonstrates the importance of a multi-model comparison when examining the added value of resolution and the importance of model physical parameterizations for simulation of the Indian monsoon.

Fusobacterium 's link to colorectal neoplasia sequenced: A systematic review and future insights

AIM To critically evaluate previous scientific evidence on Fusobacterium's role in colorectal neoplasia *** Two independent investigators systematically reviewed all original scientific articles published between January,2000,and July,2017,using Pub Med,EMBASE,and MEDLINE. A total of 355 articles were screened at the abstract level. Of these,only original scientific human,animal,and in vitro studies investigating Fusobacterium and its relationship with colorectal cancer(CRC) were included in the analysis. Abstracts,review articles,studies investigating other colonic diseases,and studies written in other languages than English were excluded from our analysis. Ninety articles were included after removing duplicates,resolving disagreements between the two reviewers,and applying the above *** Studies have consistently identified positive associations between Fusobacterium,especially Fusobacterium nucleatum(F. nucleatum),and CRC. Stronger associations were seen in CRCs proximal to the splenic flexure and Cp G island methylator phenotype(CIMP)-high CRCs. There was evidence of temporality and a biological gradient,with increased F. nucleatum DNA detection and quantity along the traditional adenoma-carcinoma sequence and in CIMP-high CRC precursors. Diet may have a differential impact on colonic F. nucleatum enrichment;evidence suggests that high fiber diet may reduce the risk of a subset of CRCs that are F. nucleatum DNA-positive. Data also suggest shorter CRC and disease-specific survival with increased amount of F. nucleatum DNA in CRC tissue. The pathophysiology of enrichment of F. nucleatum and other Fusobacterium species in colonic tissue is unclear;however,the virulence factors and changes to the local colonic environment with disruption of the protective mucus layer may contribute. The 3D periodic graphene/h-BN（G/BN） heterostuctures were studied. The stacking forms between the graphene and h-BN layers were discussed. The varieties of the geometric and electronic configurations at the inte face between graphene and h-BN layers were also reported. The metal-semiconductor transform of the G/BN material can be achieved by adjusting the stacking form of the h-BN layers or changing the proportion of graphene layers in the unit cell. An electrostatic potential well was found at the interface. Due to the potential well and the only dispersion correlation at the interface, the dielectric constant εzz in vertical direction was independent on the variety of the thickness or the proportion of the compositions in an unit cell.

Petrographic and geochemical characterization of seep carbonate from Alaminos Canyon,Gulf of Mexico

Seep carbonates were collected from the Alaminos Canyon lease area, Gulf of Mexico. The carbonates are present as slabs and blocks. Bivalve shell and foraminifer are the dominant bioclasts in carbonate. Pores are common and usually filled with acicular aragonite crystals. XRD investigation shows that aragonite is the dominate mineral (98%). Peloids, clotted microfabirc and botryoidal aragonite are de-veloped in carbonate and suggest a genesis linked with bacterial degradation of the hydrocarbons. The δ13C value of bioclasts in carbonate is from-4.9‰ to-0.6‰, indicating that the carbon source is mainly from sea water as well as the small portion incorporation of the seep hydrocarbon. The microcrystalline and sparite aragonite shows the δ13C value from-31.3‰ to-23.4‰, suggesting that their carbon is derived mainly from microbial degradation of crude oil. 14C analyses give the radiocarbon age of about 10 ka. Rare earth elements (REE) analyses of the 5% HNO3-treated solution of the carbonates show that the total REE content of the carbonates is low, that is from 0.752 to 12.725 μg·g-1. The shale-normalized REE patterns show significantly negative Ce anomalies. This suggests that cold seep carbonate is most likely formed in a relatively aerobic environment.

Medical laboratory workers handle clinical specimens,which are a threat of exposure to infectious ***,medical laboratory science students report for internships with only theoretical knowledge of biosafety and biorisk management practices,predisposing them to a higher risk of laboratory *** this study,we assessed the influence of entry-level students'adherence to practices and attitudes towards biosafety and biorisk management during the *** online survey tool was used to explore the practices and attitudes towards laboratory biosafety and risk *** the 96 students,60(62.5%)anonymous responses were received,and of these,60.3%were direct entrants,and 32.8%were diploma ***(91.7%)of the students attended hospital internships,with 60.2%in Biosafety Level(BSL)-2 laboratories and 70.2%rotating in all the core areas of laboratory *** 8.3%who did not attend any internship were under the direct entry *** to biohazards was not significantly associated with laboratory safety level and student entry category(P>0.05).Recommended laboratory biosafety practices were not significantly associated with the safety level of the laboratory and student entry category(P>0.05).Poor attitudes towards certain laboratory biosafety practices were not significantly associated with the biosafety level of the training laboratory(P>0.05),whereas training(P=0.021)and clean-up procedures(P=0.048)were associated with laboratory safety levels,*** direct entrants had no access to BSL-3 laboratories,and this category of students had a negative attitude towards internship ***,there is a need to create a multi-channel full range laboratory biosafety and biorisk management teaching reforms based on practical application,real case studies,and laboratory simulation to be incorporated into the curriculum to benefit the direct entrant.

Recurrence and survival following microwave, radiofrequency ablation, and hepatic resection of colorectal liver metastases: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Background: Gold standard for colorectal liver metastases(CRLM) remains hepatic resection(HR). However, patients with severe comorbidities, unresectable or deep-situated resectable CRLM are candidates for ablation. The aim of the study was to compare recurrence rate and survival benefit of the microwave ablation(MWA), radiofrequency ablation(RFA) and HR by conducting the first network meta-analysis. Data sources: Systematic search of the literature was conducted in the electronic databases. Both updated traditional and network meta-analyses were conducted and the results were compared between them. Results: HR cohort demonstrated significantly less local recurrence rate and better 3-and 5-year diseasefree(DFS) and overall survival(OS) compared to MWA and RFA cohorts. HR cohort included significantly younger patients and with significantly lower preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) by 10.28 ng/m L compared to RFA cohort. Subgroup analysis of local recurrence and OS of solitary and ≤3 cm CRLMs did not demonstrate any discrepancies when compared with the whole sample. Conclusions: For resectable CRLM the treatment of choice still remains HR. MWA and RFA can be used as a single or adjunct treatment in patients with unresectable CRLM and/or prohibitive comorbidities.
