Phenolic compounds are related to high biological activity,avoiding oxidation in food and human *** are by-products derived from the pecan nut processing that contain important amounts of phenols which biological activity must be *** research aimed to evaluate the antioxidant(DPPH,ABTS,FRAP and hemolysis)and anti-inflammatory activities of shell extracts from pecan nuts harvested during the crop production cycle 2018 and 2019,as well as the in vitro digestibility of their phenolic compounds,including *** showed that extracts from the crop production cycle 2018 obtained the highest yield,while those from 2019 contained the highest concentration of phenolic compounds,flavonoids and antioxidant capacity determined by DPPH(22.96 mmol ET),ABTS(91.55 mmol ET)and inhibition of hemolysis(92.12%).The anti-inflammatory activity exhibited an inhibition of the elastase enzyme up to 50 min and the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds reached up to 32%.These results showed that pecan nutshell extracts are an important source of biologically active compounds,thus,they are suitable to be used as commodities in different fields such as agricultural,food and pharmaceutical *** studies must be carried out in order to elucidate the activity of nutshell extracts within in vivo systems.

Influence of biomass burning on ozone levels in the Megalopolis of Central Mexico during the COVID-19 lockdown

The massive reductions in anthropogenic emissions resulting from the COVID-19 lockdown provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the effect of mitigation measures aiming to abate air *** Mexico,the total lockdown period took place during the dry-hot season when biomass burning activity is ***,we investigate the role of biomass burning emissions on regional ozone levels in the Megalopolis of Central *** studied period covers the lockdown phases 2 and 3,and the first month of the new *** applied a factor separation technique and process analysis to estimate the pure and synergistic contributions of emission reductions under lockdown and that from biomass burning to daily ozone maximum concentrations in 7 metropolitan areas of different states in the *** results revealed that biomass burning plumes likely masked the effect of massive reductions from mobile emissions,impacted the PBL development during phase 3 and favored transition and mixed nO_(x)-limited and VOC-limited regional *** contributed to increased ozone production in the middle to lower PBL by changing the regional background levels which potentially could bias high ozone production efficiency *** the Megalopolis contribution to economic and societal development at national scale,our study suggests that ozone mitigation measures during the dry-hot season targeting mainly mobile emissions will likely be offset by biomass burning plumes.A regional and synergic policy aiming to control biomass burning would help to reduce the occurrence of high ozone levels in Central Mexico with the co-benefit of tackling short-lived climate pollutants.

Apple Extracts Present Catabolic and Hipocolesterolemic Effect in Mice

Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent in the Chilean population: about 40% have total cholesterol levels over 200 mg/dl and 25% are obese (BMI > 30) which produces an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and deaths. Over consumption of foods rich in lipids and carbohydrates unchains these events, due to the high amount of lipid accumulation in adipocytes. These cells are capable of producing a large number of mediators of inflammation and adipokines which in large quantities can compromise the overall metabolism. Apple has been shown to stop these events. We used CF-1 mice that were fed on a high-fat diet which leads to a metabolic status similar to dyslipidemia. Different types of apple waste were direct from orchard and fruit industry. Extracts obtained were characterized and administered in drinking water. At the end of the 40-day experimental period, biochemical parameters in animals were measured and the weight of white adipose tissue (WAT) was quantified. The results were compared with the normal diet and fat diet controls. All apple extracts decrease total and LDL cholesterol to levels similar to normal control and decrease WAT. Apple extracts may be an effective protector against development of risk factors in cardiovascular disease in the Chilean population.

Acute traumatic extratemporal facial nerve injury: A 5-year review

Background: Traumatic facial nerve injury is the second leading cause of facial paralysis, presenting significant challenges such as difficulties with eating, speaking, impaired vision, and loss of facial expression. Understanding these injuries is critical for plastic surgeons to optimize recovery and functional outcomes. This study examined our experience with acute traumatic extratemporal facial nerve injuries, focusing on their characteristics, the frequency of affected nerve branches, and identification using Seckel's facial danger zones as anatomical landmarks. We also explored the implications of surgical management based on the current literature and our ***: We reviewed 50 patients with acute traumatic extratemporal facial nerve injuries treated at Hospital General Dr. Manuel Gea gonz alez in Mexico City from January 2019 to January 2024. The collected data included demographics(age, sex, severity, and time to medical attention), injury mechanism, affected nerve branches using Seckel's zones, and treatment ***: The majority of the patients were male(82%), with an average age of 29 ± 16 years. Sharp trauma from assault was the most common cause(66%). The buccal and frontal branches were most frequently affected, with Seckel zones iv and II involved in 46.86% and 33.33% of cases, respectively. Primary neurorrhaphy was performed in 96% of the ***: The effective management of traumatic facial nerve injuries relies on understanding the characteristics of the injury and using anatomical landmarks for prompt localization. Primary neurorrhaphy is the preferred surgical approach, with nerve grafting being an alternative. Ideally, early intervention within 72 h is crucial for optimal nerve recovery.

Timing of Surgery and Complications of Acute Appendicitis:A Retrospective Study

Introduction: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most frequent surgical condition of the abdomen during childhood. Its clinical presentation in children under 5 may be atypical and thus causes a delay in diagnosis, which often leads to complications such as perforation and peritonitis. Patients with unperforated AA at hospital admission may have their surgery postponed up to 24 hours while antibiotics are initiated without significant increase in complications, instead of undergoing immediate surgery. Immediate surgery to prevent complications has been questioned. Delaying surgery in patients admitted to hospital with AA has not increased the risk of perforation. Objective: To determine the impact of timing of surgery of patients with AA admitted to our Pediatric Surgery Ward of the Sorocaba Hospital Complex of the Medical Science and Health Faculty (CHS-PUC/SP) on the rate of complications (perforation, peritoneal drainage and infection of the surgical wound). Methods: We reviewed the records of 195 children aged 4 to 12 years, admitted between 2010 and 2014. They were separated in 2 groups according to timing of surgery under 7 hours (group A) and 7 to 24 hours (group B) and had their rate of complications (infection of the surgical wound, drainage and perforation (grade iv) assessed. Results: ninety-seven children underwent surgery less than 7 hours after admission (group A) and 98 children were operated between 7 and 24 hours after admission (group B). Groups A and B had no significant difference regarding the rates of wound infection (p = 0.2277), peritoneal drain insertion (p = 0.4085) or perforation (p = 0.7125). Conclusions: In our study, timing of surgery for AA had no impact on the occurrence of complications, such as infection of the surgical wound, peritoneal drainage or perforation.

Cardiac Surgery in Octogenarians and Beyond: Single Center Experience

Background: Increasing numbers of octogenarians and improvements in surgical techniques and postoperative care have resulted in increasing cardiac operations in this age. The aim is to analyze our experience of cardiac surgery on octogenarians and beyond concerning postoperative morbidities and mortality. Methods: 67 octogenarians and nonagenarians underwent open heart surgery in our hospital between 2001 to 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Data included baseline preoperative status, intraoperative and perioperative course, and immediate outcomes. Results: The mean age was 86.22 ± 6.1 years. 86.6% patients were males. Symptoms were dyspnea;Class II in 13.4%, Class III in 55.2%, Class iv in 31.4% patients;angina in 82.1%, and CHF in 25.4% patients. The mean EF was 37.8% ± 10. Risk factors include smoking in 52.2%, DM in 37.3%, hypertension in 28.4%, obesity in 25.4%, previous MI in 22.4%, COPD in 17.9%, renal insufficiency in 11.9%, pulmonary hypertension in 7.5%, PVD in 6%, and cerebrovascular disease in 3% patients. The procedures were isolated CABG in 73%, AVR in 9%, MVR in 6%, CABG/valve in 9%, and MVR and AVR in 3% patients. Complications were 18%. It included renal impairment in 18%, arrhythmias in 14.9%, bleeding in 6%, prolonged ventilation in 13.4%, CHF in 4.5%, gastrointestinal bleeding in 4.5%, wound infection in 7.5%, and cerebrovascular accident in 3%. Hospital mortality was 9% patients. Conclusions: Cardiac surgery can be performed safely with acceptable hospital morbidity and mortality in octogenarians and beyond. Early referral and proper selection of patients are mandatory to improve immediate postoperative survival.

Usefulness of applying lidocaine in esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed under sedation with propofol

AIM:To determine whether topical lidocaine benefits esophagogastroduoduenoscopy(EGD) by decreasing propofol dose necessary for sedation or procedurerelated ***:The study was designed as a prospective,single centre,double blind,randomised clinical trial and was conducted in 2012 between January and May(nCT01489891).Consecutive patients undergoing EGD were randomly assigned to receive supplemental topical lidocaine(L;50 mg in an excipient solution which was applied as a spray to the oropharynx) or placebo(P;taste excipients solution without active substance,similarly delivered) prior to the standard propofol sedation *** propofol was administered as a bolus intravenous(iv) dose,with patients in the L and P groups receiving initial doses based on the patient’s American Society of Anaesthesiologists(ASA) classification(ASAⅠ-Ⅱ:0.50-0.60 mg/kg;ASA Ⅲ-Ⅳ:0.25-0.35 mg/kg),followed by 10-20 mg iv dose every 30-60 s at the anaesthetist’s *** signs,anthropometric measurements,amount of propofol administered,sedation level reached,examination time,and the subjective assessments of the endoscopist’s and anaesthetist’s satisfaction(based upon a four point Likert scale) were *** statistical tests were performed by the Stata statistical software suite(Release 11,2009;StataCorp,LP,College Station,TX,United States).RESULTS:no significant differences were found between the groups treated with lidocaine or placebo in terms of total propofol dose(310.7 ± 139.2 mg/kg per minute vs 280.1 ± 87.7 mg/kg per minute,P = 0.15) or intraprocedural propofol dose(135.3 ± 151.7 mg/kg per minute vs 122.7 ± 96.5 mg/kg per minute,P = 0.58).Only when the L and P groups were analysed with the particular subgroups of female,nd lower anaesthetic risk level(ASA Ⅰ-Ⅱ) was a statistically significant difference found(L:336.5 ± 141.2 mg/kg per minute vs P:284.6 ± 91.2 mg/kg per minute,P = 0.03) for greater total propofol requirements).The total i

Background:Animal models are widely used in scientific research in order to obtain information from a whole organism under a specific set of experimental *** lineages of mice have been used to investigate diseases and new therapeutic strategies,and,consequently,hematological and biochemical tests in these laboratory animals are essential to validate scientific *** study seeks to establish reference values for hematological and biochemical parameters of four lineages of ***:We evaluated the hematological and biochemical profiles of 20 males and 20 females from the lineages Swiss(heterogeneous),BALB/c and C57BL/6(isogenic),and B6D2F1(hybrid),totaling 160 *** were standardized using the systems pocH-100iv Diff™for 19 hematological parameters and VITROS®350 for 12 biochemical ***:Results are shown as means and standard deviation,grouped by lineage and *** the values obtained in this study with the values from previous studies,some variations were detected,which could be explained by differences in methodologies or individual ***:Thus our study shows that knowledge and disclosure of the values of physiological parameters of laboratory animals is necessary,and emphasises the importance of considering variations influenced by gender,lineage and genotype in the choice of the best experimental model.
