Contribution of the Incorporation of Poultry Litter and Limestone for the Fertility of Sandy Soil in the Brazilian Amazon

Sandy soils have limitations for growing plants. In general, they have low fertility, high toxic aluminum content and low organic matter. The organic matter is responsible for most of the cation exchange capacity of these soils. Added to this, the low clay content and the structure of these soils with large volumes of macropores, determine their low water retention. An alternative is the incorporation of organic waste combined with the practice of liming. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the incorporation of poultry litter and limestone in the fertility of sandy soils in the Brazilian Amazon. The experiment was conducted in Colorado do Oeste, RO, on a Quartzipsamment in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to four doses of poultry litter (0, 5, 10 and 15 mg·ha-1), its incorporation for four times (0, 75, 110 and 145 days) in the presence and absence of 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone, with six replications. The incorporation of 15 mg·ha-1 of poultry litter combined with 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone for 75 days after the merger raises several components of Quartzipsamment fertility, mainly being the availability of phosphorus.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that the human aging process is associated with a significant decline in neuromuscular function and performance. Twin studies demonstrate that genetic factors partially explain the inter-individual variation of fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle strength. PURPOSE: To examine the association between the polymorphism of the gene IGF-2 with phenotypes strength and muscle mass of elderly women pre and post resistance training. METHODS: 76 elderly women participated in this analysis. These volunteers, who should be sedentary for at least 6 months before the study, were assigned four groups in relation to allele GAGG, AA, GAAA and GG. The first analysis compared 60 elderly women with GG and GA allele (GAGG) versus 16 elderly women with AA allele. The second analysis compared 54 elderly women with GA and AA (GAAA) versus 22 elderly women GG allele. The Body mass index, fat free mass, fat mass and Isokinetic Muscle Peak Torque were measured. All volunteers were participating in the Resistance Training program. The DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood leukocytes using a salting out protocol. The primer for IGF-II gene exon 9 was 5’-GTCCCTGAACCAGCAAAGAG-3’ 0.5 μM (0.625 μl) Primer R-5’-TGATGGAAAAGGGAGTGAGG-3’ 0.5 μM (0.625 μl), Taq DNA Polimerase enzime 0.5 U (0.1 μl), água milli-Q (3.8 μl) 5 hg de DNA (3 μl). PCR amplification was performed in a programmable thermal cycler GeneAmp? PCR System 9700. RESULTS: The results of the first analysis GAGG × AA versus the group AA showed the relative increase in knee extensor peak torque relative and also in the fat-free mass and showed a decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GAGG group. The second analysis considered the group GAAA versus group GG showed decreases in the fat-free mass percentage in the GAAA group, also showed the relative increase in the fat-free mass in the GG group and decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GG group. Summary: TS (Turner syndrome) is a genetic disease which affects women caused by complete or partial absence of one of the X chromosomes. This condition is related to an increase in autoimmune diseases incidence like, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). Material and Methods: a case report of a 31 years old woman with TS hospitalized with two months of prostration, fever, rashes, nausea, vomit and diarrhea. Investigations have shown colonic mucosa inflammation, besides chronic colitis with cryptic microabscess in the anatomopathological evaluation, suggesting IBD as etiology. Treatment with mesalazine was effective in symptoms improvement. Conclusions: TS is a condition frequently associated with autoimmune diseases, including diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, such as IBDs. Recognition and early treatment of this condition leads to an improvement in the quality of life of these patients and reduces the chances of future complications.

Co-Inoculation of Soybean with Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum Promotes Early Nodulation

Soybean inoculation with elite strains of Bradyrhizobium to improve nodulation, N2 fixation, and grain yield is well established worldwide. However, when grown in soils where N is deficient, soybean undergoes an initial phase of N starvation that may last up to 20 days after seedling germination due to the lack of synchronism between the phase when seed N reserves are exhausted and the moment when plants begin to benefit from the nitrogen fixed by the bacteria. Practices that promote early nodulation may play a key role in reducing the N starvation period. Azospirillum is a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that can stimulate root hair formation and root growth, creating more sites for early root infection and nodule formation by N2-fixing Bradyrhizobium spp. In this study, the effects of co-inoculating soybeans with Bradyrhizobium spp. and Azospirillum brasilense on nodulation precocity and N2 fixation were evaluated under greenhouse and field conditions. Nodule number and dry weight, as well as plant and root dry weight and N accumulated in shoots at 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30 days after emergence (DAE) were evaluated in response to inoculation with Bradyrhizobium spp. alone or when co-inoculated with Azospirillum sp. In the greenhouse, co-inoculated plants nodulated precociously as indicated by a significant increase (p Azospirillum helps plants to overcome environmental stresses.

The thermophysical properties of API 5L X80 steel were experimentally measured, in order to use these in computational models to determine the temperature field in welded joints. In this work, values of thermal expansion coefficient, specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity were experimentally obtained as a function of temperature. The thermal expansion coefficient was determined at temperatures of 20°C to 1200°C in a dilatometer DIL 402 PC. The specific heat was determined on a differential scanning calorimeter at temperatures between 300°C and 1200°C. The diffusivity and thermal conductivity were determined in the temperature range 100°C to 800°C in a 457 LFA diffusivimeter using laser flash technique. The thermal expansion coefficient remained approximately with constant value of 8.5 × 10-6 K-1 and suffered two falls reaching values -25 × 10-6 K-1 and -50 × 10-6 K-1 in the stages of heating and cooling respectively. It was observed for this material, minimum and maximum values of specific heat equal to 0.571 J/gK and 1.084 J/gK at temperatures of 300°C and 720°C, respectively. The behavior of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity in the temperature range 100°C to 800°C tends to decrease with increasing temperature. Based on the measured properties, computational modeling of the temperature field can be numerically obtained with better accuracy.

Corn Water Variables Assessments from Earth Observation Data in the Sao Paulo State, Southeast Brazil

Landsat satellite images and agrometeorological data were used together for modelling the crop coefficient （Kc） in irrigation pivots composed by a mixture of corn hybrids from a commercial farm for grains and silage, located at the northwestern side of Sao Paulo state, Brazil. After developing relationships between Kc and the accumulated degree-days （DDac） and having yield data for 2012 available, they were applied in the whole state, to upscale the crop water variables, during the GS （growing seasons） of a second-harvest crop from March to August. Spatial thermohydrological differences among the main corn growing regions were clear. The largest CWP （crop water productivity） values and SD （standard deviations） were for Itapetininga with an average value of 1.60 ± 0.43 kg m-3, while the lowest ones were for Presidente Prudente （0.81±0.21 kg m-3）. As corn is important for these growing regions, being inside of the priorities from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, these results should be considered for a rational exploration, including both, irrigation and rainfed conditions, as the actual water scarcity can bring much competition with other non-agricultural sectors.

Determination of Residual Stresses Numerically Obtained in ASTM AH36 Steel Welded by TIG Process

Residual stresses have been numerically determined in welded joints. In this study, the numerical model is based on the coupling of different physical phenomena considering the thermal, mechanical and metallurgical nature of a welding process. The ABAQUS software program was used to perform the numerical simulations, based on the finite element method (FEM). The aspects related to the mathematical modeling of complex welding procedures were pondered with the FEM: variations in the physical and mechanical properties of the materials as a function of the temperature;the transience and the speed of the welding process, the material phase transformations;the different mechanisms of heat exchange with the environment (convection and radiation);all them associated with a high level of nonlinearity. The heat source used in this analytical model for heat supply was the double ellipsoid model proposed by Goldak, in which a 60 mm × 50 mm and 3 mm rectangular ASTM AH36 steel plate was used for the TIG process simulations. Throughout this work, the optimization of the welding procedures currently practiced in petrochemical and ship building industries can be applied to reduce the levels of residual stresses.

This paper is part of a research under enhancement since 2001, in which the main objective is to measure small dynamic displacements by analysis of L1 GPS carrier frequency with 1575.42 MHz—wavelength 19.05 cm, under an adaptive method for collecting data and filtering techniques. This method, named Phase Residual Method (PRM) is based on the frequency domain analysis of the phase residuals resulted from the L1 double difference static data processing of two satellites in almost orthogonal elevation angle. In this work it is proposed to obtain the phase residuals directly from the raw phase observable collected in a short baseline during a limited time span, in lieu of obtaining the residual data file from regular GPS processing programs. In order to improve the ability to detect millimetric displacements, two filtering techniques are introduced. The first one is the autocorrelation that reduces the phase noise with random time behavior. The other one is the running mean to separate low frequency from the high frequency phase sources. Two trials are presented to verify the proposed method and filtering techniques applied. One simulates a 2.5 millimeter vertical GPS antenna displacement and the second using the data collected during a bridge dynamic load test. The results show a good consistency to detect millimetric oscillations from L1 frequency and filtering techniques.

Objective: To determine the prognostic value of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification and of the main clinical pathologic variables in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients who underwent surgical treatment. Methods: In this international collaborative study, 376 RCC patients who underwent partial nephrectomy (PN) or radical nephrectomy (RN) during the period 1989-2009 were assessed. The pathological data were reviewed by a single pathologist, and all of the surgically treated patients had been previously evaluated by a team of anesthesiologists and classified as ASA 1, ASA 2, or ASA 3. Results: In total, 318 patients were included in the study, with a mean followup of 48 months. Incidental tumors represented 47% of the cases, while 11.6% presented with metastases at diagnosis. Among the patients assessed, 38 (11.9%) were classified as ASA 1, 213 (67%) as ASA 2, and 67 (21.1%) as ASA 3. An association between the ASA classification and the main clinicopathological variables of RCC was observed. The univariate analysis for overall survival (OS) revealed significant differences in the survival curves according to the ASA classification (p < 0.001). High-grade neoplasms, the presence of metastasis at diagnosis, clinical stage III/IV, and incidental tumors remained as independent predictors of survival. Moreover, the multivariate analysis revealed a negative impact of the ASA classification on OS (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated a correlation between the ASA classification and the main prognostic factors of RCC and its impact on survival rates. ASA 3 patients had more aggressive tumors, increased risk of perioperative complications, and worse outcomes compared with ASA1 or ASA 2. Thus, the ASA classification may be considered an additional tool for assessing and planning the treatment of RCC patients.
