Alleviation of spike stall in axial compressors utilizing grooved casing treatment

Abstract This article deals with application of grooved type casing treatment for suppression of spike stall in an isolated axial compressor rotor blade row. The continuous grooved casing treatment covering the whole compressor circumference is of 1.8 mm in depth and located between 90% and 108% chord of the blade tip as measured from leading edge. The method of investigation is based on time-accurate three-dimensional full annulus numerical simulations for cases with and without casing treatment. Discretization of the Navier Stokes equations has been carried out based on an upwind second-order scheme and k-a-SST （Shear Stress Transport） turbulence modeling has been used for estimation of eddy viscosity. Time-dependent flow structure results for the smooth casing reveal that there are two criteria for spike stall inception known as leading edge spillage and trailing edge backftow, which occur at specific mass flow rates in near-stall conditions. In this case, two dominant stall cells of different sizes could be observed. The larger one is caused by the spike stall covering roughly two blade passages in the circumferential direction and about 25% span in the radial direction. Spike stall disturbances are accompanied by lower frequencies and higher amplitudes of the pressure signals. Casing treatment causes flow blockages to reduce due to allevi- ation of backflow regions, which in turn reduces the total pressure loss and increases the axial veloc- ity in the blade tip gap region, as well as tip leakage flow fluctuation at higher frequencies and lower amplitudes. Eventually, it can be concluded that the casing treatment of the stepped tip gap type could increase the stall margin of the compressor. This fact is basically due to retarding the movement of the interface region between incoming and tip leakage flows towards the rotor leading edge Diane and suttressing the reversed flow around the blade trailing edee.

Numerical and experimental study of an innovative pipeline design in a granular pneumatic-conveying system

During gas-solid mixture conveying in a dense phase, material is conveyed in dunes on the bottom of the pipeline, or as a pulsating moving bed. This phenomenon increases the pressure drop and power consumption. We introduce a new technique to reduce the pressure drop, which is termed the perforated double tube. To validate this new model, the gas-solid flow pattern and pressure drop were studied numerically and experimentally. The power consumption was also studied experimentally. Numerical studies were performed by the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to predict gas and particle movement in the pipeline, Comparisons between the numerical predictions and the experimental results for the gas-solid flow patterns and pressure drop show good agreement.

Electrophoretic deposition and an investigation of co-dopants effect on luminescence property of Mg2SiO4:Eu3+phosphors

Forsterite particles doped with europium ions（Eu^（3＋）） were synthesized via a solution combustion method. The effect of co-dopants on photoluminescence intensity was described. Different percentages of calcium（Ca^（2＋））, zinc（Zn^（2＋））, barium（Ba^（2＋）） and strontium（Sr^（2＋）） were added to the Mg2SiO4：Eu^（3＋）*** synthesized sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy, spectrofluorometer and the FTIR spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction（XRD）results revealed that dominant phase was forsterite in all samples. Additionally, a negligible amount of periclase phase was recognized in the samples. The average size of the synthesized particles was less than 200 nm. The presence of co-dopant led to an enhancement in the photoluminescent property of the synthesized samples. The maximum increase in photoluminescence intensity was obtained by Ba^（2＋）ions as a co-dopant. Condensed films of photoluminescence particles were produced by utilizing electrophoresis technique to deposit particles. The results showed that polyvinyl pyrrolidone was the best surface modifier to raise the mass deposition of the samples on the substrate.

Stabilizing silica nanoparticles in high saline water by using polyvinylpyrrolidone for reduction of asphaltene precipitation damage under dynamic condition

In this study, the performance of stable nanofluid containing SiO2 nanoparticles dispersed and stabilized in high salinity brine for asphaltene inhibition in dynamic condition is evaluated. In the first stage of this work, the stability of silica nanoparticles in different range of water salinity(0–100000 mg·L-1) is investigated. Next, stable nanofluid containing highest salinity is selected as asphaltene inhibitor agent to inject into the damaged core sample. The estimated values of oil recovery for base case, after damage process and after inhibition of asphaltene precipitation using nanofluid are 51.6%, 36.1% and 46.7%, respectively. The results showed the reduction in core damage after using nanofluid. In addition, the relative permeability curves are plotted for the base case, after damage process and also after inhibition of asphaltene precipitation using nanofluid. Comparison of relative permeability curves shows, relative permeability of oil phase decreased after damage process as compared with the base case. But after using nanofluid the oil relative permeability curve has shifted to the right and effective permeability of oil phase has been improved.

In this paper,the thermal effects on the buckling of functionally graded（FG） nanobeams subjected to various types of thermal loading including uniform,linear and non-linear temperature changes are investigated based on the nonlocal third-order shear deformation beam *** material properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to vary gradually along the thickness direction according to the power-law *** governing equations are derived through Hamilton＇s principle and solved *** examples are performed to verify the present *** results are presented for thermal buckling analysis of FG nanobeams such as the effects of the power-law index,nonlocal parameter,slenderness ratio and thermal loading in detail.

Modeling of unconfined compressive strength of soil-RAP blend stabilized with Portland cement using multivariate adaptive regression spline

The recycled layer in full-depth reclamation (FDR) method is a mixture of coarse aggregates and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) which is stabilized by a stabilizer agent. For design and quality control of the final product in FDR method, the unconfined compressive strength of stabilized material should be known. This paper aims to develop a mathematical model for predicting the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil-RAP blend stabilized with Portland cement based on multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS). To this end, two different aggregate materials were mixed with different percentages of RAP and then stabilized by different percentages of Portland cement. For training and testing of MARS model, total of 64 experimental UCS data were employed. Predictors or independent variables in the developed model are percentage of RAP, percentage of cement, optimum moisture content, percent passing of #200 sieve, and curing time. The results demonstrate that MARS has a great ability for prediction of the UCS in case of soil-RAP blend stabilized with Portland cement (R2 is more than 0.97). Sensitivity analysis of the proposed model showed that the cement, optimum moisture content, and percent passing of #200 sieve are the most influential parameters on the UCS of FDR layer.

A global harmony search algorithm for finding optimal capacitor location and size in distribution networks

Shunt capacitors are broadly applied in distribution systems to scale down power losses, improve voltage profile and boost system capacity. The amount of capacitors added and location of deployment in the system highly determine the advantage of compensation. A novel global harmony search(GHS) algorithm in parallel with the backward/ forward sweep power flow technique and radial harmonic power flow was used to investigate the optimal placement and sizing of capacitors in radial distribution networks for minimizing power loss and total cost by taking account load unbalancing, mutual coupling and harmonics. The optimal capacitor placement outcomes show that the GHS algorithm can reduce total power losses up to 60 k W and leads to more than 18% of cost saving. The results also demonstrate that the GHS algorithm is more effective in minimization of power loss and total costs compared with genetic algorithm(GA), particle swarm optimization(PSO) and harmony search(HS) algorithm. Moreover, the proposed algorithm converges within 800 iterations and is faster in terms of computational time and gives better performance in finding optimal capacitor location and size compared with other optimization techniques.

Evaluation of heavy metal contamination hazards in nuisance dust particles, in Kurdistan Province, western Iran

The effects of natural andgeochemical factors depending on heavy metal contamination in nuisance dust particles were evaluated. The nuisance dust particles were sampled using passive deposit gauge method for one year from April2010 to March2011 and the obtained samples were measured for the total contents and the contamination levels of Fe, Mn, Cu and As usinggeo-accumulation index （Igeo ）, enrichment factor （EF） and the integrated pollution index （IPI）. The results showed that, the contamination levels of Fe and Mn based on Igeo values, were uncontaminated （Igeo 〈 0）（variations of the Igeo index was from -3.11 to -1.751 for Fe, from -0.630 to -1.925 for Mn）, while the values of Cu and As were demonstrated to have moderate contamination based on Igeo values （variations of Igeo index was from -1.125 to 0.848 for Cu, and from -2.002 to 1.249 for As）. The analysis of EF also revealed minor to moderate enrichment for Mn （1.215-4.214）, minor to moderately severe enrichment for Cu （2.791-6.484）, and As （1.370-8.462）, respectively. The variation of the IPI index also showed low to moderate level of heavy metal pollution in nuisance dust particulates （0.511-1.829）. The analysis of the results also approved that the natural processes andgeochemical variables （the changing meteorological parameters） can significantly affect the availability of heavy metals in nuisance dust particles in Western Iran.

Characterization of gas-liquid-solid fluidized beds by S statistics

The hydrodynamics of a gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed was investigated by applying the S statistics method to pressure fluctuations measured under various operating conditions in a laboratory-scale bed. S statistics tests reveal the existence of three transition velocities, especially at low gas velocities. Four distinct fluidization regimes, namely, the compacted bed, agitated bed and coalesced and discrete bubble regimes were detected. A comparison of reconstructed attractors of pressure fluctuations measured at different axial positions along the riser and with various solid loadings showed significant differences in the signals compared before fluidization, especially at minimum liquid agitation velocity. Close to the minimum liquid fluidization velocity and high liquid velocities, the variation in particle size has an insignificant effect on the bed hydrodynamics. Therefore, S statistics is a reliable method to demar- cate different fluidization regimes and to characterize the influence of various operating conditions on the hydrodynamics of gas-liquid-solid fluidized beds. The method is applicable in large-scale industrial installations to detect dynamic changes within a bed, such as regime transitions or agglomeration.

Finite element model updating of a large structure using multi-setup stochastic subspace identification method and bees optimization algorithm

In the present contribution, operational modal analysis in conjunction with bees optimization algorithm are utilized to update the finite element model of a solar power plant structure. The physical parameters which required to be updated are uncertain parameters including geometry, material properties and boundary conditions of the aforementioned structure. To determine these uncertain parameters, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to increase the solution accuracy. An objective function is determined using the sum of the squared errors between the natural frequencies calculated by finite element method and operational modal analysis, which is optimized using bees optimization algorithm. The natural frequencies of the solar power plant structure are estimated by multi-setup stochastic subspace identification method which is considered as a strong and efficient method in operational modal analysis. The proposed algorithm is efficiently implemented on the solar power plant structure located in Shahid Chamran university of Ahvaz, Iran, to update parameters of its finite element model. Moreover, computed natural frequencies by numerical method are compared with those of the operational modal analysis. The results indicate that, bees optimization algorithm leads accurate results with fast convergence.
