Outcomes of a non-randomised audit of single pigtail suture stents in urolithiasis management of Asian patients in Singapore

Objective:Double-J(DJ)ureteric stents are commonly placed perioperatively for semirigid or flexible ureteroscopic renal *** is believed that lesser stent material within the bladder mitigates stent-related *** study aimed to evaluate the J-Fil ureteral stent,a single pigtail suture stent compared with conventional DJ stent in relation to stent symptoms in an Asian population undergoing ureterorenal ***:Based on internal audit committee recommendation approval,the records of 50 patients retrieved,available data of 41 patients who were prospectively enrolled into two groups(Group 1[J-Fil stent group],n=21 and Group 2[DJ stent group],n=20)between August 2020 to January 2021,were *** compared were nature of procedure,stone location and size,ease of deployment or removal,and complications.A modified universal stent symptom questionnaire was used to assess morbidity of stent symptoms within 48 h of insertion and at ***:Both groups had similar median age,distribution in male to female ratio,and stone *** overall median universal stent symptom questionnaire score at insertion was similar for bladder pain,flank or loin pain,and quality of life between Group 1 and 2;however,at removal Group 1 fared significantly better than Group 2,especially for flank or loin pain and pain at *** groups had similar ease in insertion with no hospital ***:Our audit favoured the single pigtail suture stent in Asian ureters in mitigating stent-related *** showed a good safety profile with easy deployment and *** promises a new standard in stenting.

Donors for Resistance to Brown Planthopper Nilaparvata lugens(St?l) from Wild Rice Species

Out of 1 989 wild accessions sown in seed boxes for screening, only 1 003 wild accessions with good germination were screened against brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens(St?l) under greenhouse conditions. The collection comprised of accessions from 11 wild species and African cultivated rice. The germplasm was screened for BPH following standard seed box screening technique in the greenhouse. As many as 159 accessions were identified as resistant during the year 2012 based on one year screening. A selected set of BPH resistant accessions were screened again during 2013. Based on the two years screening, seven accessions of O. nivara(AA), one accession of O. officinalis(CC), seven accessions of O. australiensis(EE), five accessions of O. punctata(BB and BBCC) and nine accessions of O. latifolia(CCDD) were confirmed to be resistant to BPH. So far no BPH resistance genes have been identified and designated from O. nivara and O. punctata, hence these may act as new sources of resistance.

Retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)is an emerging cause of childhood blindness in the developing *** low and middle-income countries are facing common challenges in the midst of the‘third epidemic’of *** in neonatal care facilities has increased survival of preterm *** of awareness and non-uniform standards of care in the ever-increasing number of neonatal intensive care units(NICUs)and special newborn care units(SNCUs)has resulted in this surge of *** from low birth weight and the degree of prematurity,use of unblended supplemental oxygen,sepsis,anemia and blood transfusion are important risk factors associated with ROP in developing *** forms of aggressive posterior ROP(APROP)are seen in heavier birth weight babies in the developing *** of ROP by good quality neonatal care,timely diagnosis by mandatory ROP screening in NICUs and training manpower for laser treatment of ROP requires close collaboration between the neonatologists,ophthalmologists and the policy *** approach and inter-disciplinary co-ordination are keys in a nation’s drive to fight this preventable cause of blindness.

Biomass and Carbon Sequestration Potential of Poplar-Wheat Inter-cropping System in Irrigated Agro-ecosystem in India

An attempt has been made to assess the productivity as well as the carbon sequestration potential of this mixture. The grain as well as straw yields were significantly lower in poplar block plantations than in the open (14 to 64% and 13 to 66% grain and straw yield, respectively under one to six year plantation). The annual productivity of poplars was recorded maximum after fourth year and later the annual wood increment decreased (42.4, 39.8 and 35.6 m3/ha/yr after 4th, 5th and 6th year, respectively). The enrichment of soil through litter and roots enhanced the organic carbon in the surface layer of soil (0-15 cm) under poplar blocks as compared to open fields with wheat crop only. The carbon storage potential in agroforestry system was recorded very high in comparison to sole crop. The carbon storage in agroforestry system increased with the age of the plantation and the major contribution came from the timber, roots and litter (37.30 mg/ha after six years). However, wheat crop yield decreased under poplar but this may be compensated by the poplar trees in terms of biomass, economic returns and the carbon sequestration potential.

Background:India leads all nations in the number of preterms born *** over 3.5 million infants,a reducing infant mortality rate and an expanding base of rural neonatal intensive care units,the number of infants requiring retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)screening has dramatically *** number of ROP specialists in the country is currently *** ROP specialists of the country initiated the Indian ROP(IROP)society to address these ***:In 2016,the IROP society was conceived and registered as a professional body with a mission to prevent needless blindness from ROP by promoting standards of excellence.A national online membership drive was carried *** data collected in this survey was analyzed to collate information on past training,practice patterns,ease of screening and treatment,use of wide-field imaging and willingness to be ***:Of the 113 members at the time of submission,67.3%were male.88.5%were formally trained for ROP and 85.8%were vitreo-retinal *** the practicing members,96%were“comfortable”with screening and 86%with ROP treatment and this correlated with training(P=0.001 and P=0.002 respectively).Only 25.7%performed vitreous surgery for *** field imaging was used by 33%of members in their practice and 52%of those who did not,wanted to use it in the *** who used imaging performed more number of laser treatments than those who did not(P=0.008).Laser was the preferred modality of treatment for 98%of members.A majority of the members(92.5%)were willing to be ***:The IROP society is a novel platform for ROP specialists to *** society has setup short,mid and long-term goals to make ROP care more accessible and affordable with appropriate use of technology.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater is a promising tool for informing public health decisions during the COVID-19 ***,approaches for its analysis by use of reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-q PCR)are still far from standardized *** characterize inter-and intra-laboratory variability among results when using various methods deployed across Canada,aliquots from a real wastewater sample were spiked with surrogates of SARS-CoV-2(gamma-radiation inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and human coronavirus strain 229E[HCoV-229E])at low and high levels then provided"blind"to eight *** estimates reported by individual laboratories were consistently within a 1.0-log_(10) range for aliquots of the same spiked *** laboratories distinguished between low-and high-spikes for both *** expected,greater variability was observed in the results amongst laboratories than within individual laboratories,but SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentration estimates for each spiked condition remained mostly within 1.0-log_(10) *** no-spike wastewater aliquots provided yielded non-detects or trace levels(<20 gene copies/mL)of SARS-CoV-2 *** appear linked to methods that included or focused on the solids fraction of the wastewater matrix and might represent in-situ SARS-CoV-2 to the wastewater ***-229E RNA was not detected in the no-spike ***,all methods yielded comparable results at the conditions *** behavior of SARS-CoV-2 and spiked surrogates in wastewater should be considered to evaluate method effectiveness.A consistent method and laboratory to explore wastewater SARS-CoV-2 temporal trends for a given system,with appropriate quality control protocols and documented in adequate detail should succeed.
