Role of bacterial and genetic factors in gastric cancer in Costa Rica

AIM： To evaluate several risk factors for gastric cancer （GC） in Costa Rican regions with contrasting GC incidence rate （GCIR）. METHODS： According to GCIR, 191 Helicobacter pylori （H pylori）-positive patients were classified into groups A （high GCIR, n = 101） and B （low GCIR, n = 90）. Human DNA obtained from biopsy specimens was used in the determination of polymorphisms of the genes coding for interleukin （IL）-1β and IL-10 by PCRRFLP, and IL-1RN by PCR. H pylori DNA extractions obtained from clinical isolates of 83 patients were used for PCR-based genotyping of H pylori cagA, vacA and babA2. Human DNA from gastric biopsies of 52 GC patients was utilized for comparative purposes. RESULTS： Cytokine polymorphisms showed no association with GCIR variability. However, gastric atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and strains with different vacA genotypes in the same stomach （mixed strain infection） were more frequently found in group A than in group B, and cagA and vacA s1b were significantly associated with high GCIR （P = 0.026 and 0.041, respectively）. IL- 1β＋3954_T/C （OR 2.1, 1.0-4.3）, IL-1RN^＊2/L （OR 3.5, 1.7-7.3） and IL-10-592_C/A （OR 3.2, 1.5-6.8） were individually associated with GC, and a combination of these cytokine polymorphisms with Hpylori vacA slb and ml further increased the risk （OR 7.2, 1.4-36.4）. conCLUSION： Although a proinflammatory cytokine genetic profile showed an increased risk for developing GC, the characteristics of Hpylori infection, in particular the status of cagA and vacA genotype distribution seemed to play a major role in GCIR variability in Costa Rica.

AIM:To evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori(*** ) babA2 ,babB and a recombinant gene between babA2 and babB(babA2/B ),and their role in the development of atrophic gastritis in Costa Rican and Japanese clinical ***:A total of 95 continuous ***-positive Costa Rican(41 males and 54 females;mean age,50.65 years;SD,± 13.04 years) and 95 continuous ***-positive Japanese(50 males and 45 females;mean age,63.43;SD,± 13.21 years) patients underwent upper endoscopy from October 2005 to July *** were enrolled for the polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-based genotyping of the *** babA2 ,babB and babA2/B *** analysis was performed using the χ2 test and the Fisher's exact probability test and multivariate analysis was performed by logistic regression adjusting for gender and age.P conCLUSION:These results suggest that the status of babA2 and babA2/B shows geographic differences,and that babA2 has clinical relevance in Costa Rica.

Effects of temporal variability on HBV model calibration

This study aimed to investigate the effects of temporal variability on the optimization of the Hydrologiska *** Vattenbalansavedlning （HBV） model, as well as the calibration performance using manual optimization and average parameter values. By applying the HBV model to the Jiangwan Catchment, whose geological features include lots of cracks and gaps, simulations under various schemes were developed： short, medium-length, and long temporal calibrations. The results show that, with long temporal calibration, the objective function values of the Nash- Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient （NSE）, relative error （RE）, root mean square error （RMSE）, and high flow ratio generally deliver a preferable simulation. Although NSE and RMSE are relatively stable with different temporal scales, significant improvements to RE and the high flow ratio are seen with longer temporal calibration. It is also noted that use of average parameter values does not lead to better simulation results compared with manual optimization. With medium-length temporal calibration, manual optimization delivers the best simulation results, with NSE, RE, RMSE, and the high flow ratio being 0.563 6, 0.122 3, 0.978 8, and 0.854 7, respectively; and calibration using average parameter values delivers NSE, RE, RMSE, and the high flow ratio of 0.481 1, 0.467 6, 1.021 0, and 2.784 0, respectively. Similar behavior is found with long temporal calibration, when NSE, RE, RMSE, and the high flow ratio using manual optimization are 0.525 3, -0.069 2, 1.058 0, and 0.980 0, respectively, as compared with 0.490 3, 0.224 8, 1.096 2, and 0.547 9, respectively, using average parameter values. This study shows that selection of longer periods of temooral calibration in hvdrolouical analysis delivers better simulation in general for water balance analysis.

Stable two-sided matching of slot allocation in airport collaborative decision making by top trading cycles mechanism

The problem of capacity shortage in some airports needs to be dealt with sustainable solutions including a more efficient use of the existing runway slots at the airports. The Collaborative Decision Making（CDM） is an important approach applied to Air Traffic Management（ATM）to achieve this efficient use of the slots allocation. Using the Matching approach for two-sided markets of Game theory, the Top Trading Cycle CDM（TTC-CDM） algorithm developed in this research is an extension of the CDM approach aggregating the Ground Delay Program（GDP）of the air sector. The paper compared the developed TTC-CDM model to the existing models such as the conventional Compression algorithm in CDM, the Trade Cycle algorithm and the Deferred Acceptance CDM（DA-CDM） model to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Through a case study, the results show the effective application of TTC-CDM model to slot allocation in ATM and also presents the advantage of considering the preferences of airport managers beside ATC controllers and airlines in the decision processing.

Online Learning control for Harmonics Reduction Based on Current controlled Voltage Source Power Inverters

Nonlinear loads in the power distribution system cause non-sinusoidal currents and voltages with harmonic *** active filters(SAF) with current controlled voltage source inverters(CCVSI) are usually used to obtain balanced and sinusoidal source currents by injecting compensation ***,CCVSI with traditional controllers have a limited transient and steady state *** this paper,we propose an adaptive dynamic programming(ADP) controller with online learning capability to improve transient response and *** proposed controller works alongside existing proportional integral(PI) controllers to efficiently track the reference currents in the d-q *** can generate adaptive control actions to compensate the PI *** proposed system was simulated under different nonlinear(three-phase full wave rectifier) load *** performance of the proposed approach was compared with the traditional *** have also included the simulation results without connecting the traditional PI control based power inverter for reference *** online learning based ADP controller not only reduced average total harmonic distortion by 18.41%,but also outperformed traditional PI controllers during transients.

COMBINING SINGULAR SPECTRUM ANALYSIS AND PAR(p) STRUCTURES TO MODEL WIND SPEED TIME SERIES

Singular spectrum analysis （SSA） is a technique that decomposes a time series into a set of components, such as, trend, harmonics, and residuals. Leaving out the residual components and adding up the others, the time series can be smoothed. This procedure has been used to model Brazilian electricity consumption and flow series. The PAR（p）, periodic autoregressive models, has been broadly used in modelling energy series in Brazil. This paper presents an approach of this decomposition method, by fitting the PAR（p）, considering its multivariate version known as multivariate SSA （MSSA）. The method was applied to a vector of two wind speed series recorded at two locations in the Brazilian Northeast region. The obtained results, when compared to the univariate decomposition of each series, were far superior, showing that the spatial correlation between the two series were considered by MSSA decomposition stage.

Eosinophilic esophagitis in patients with esophageal atresia and chronic dysphagia

Esophageal atresia(EA)is defined as a discontinuity of the lumen of the esophagus repaired soon after *** is a common symptom in these patients,usually related to stricture,dysmotility or peptic *** present 4 cases of patients with EA who complained of dysphagia and the diagnosis of Eosinophilic esophagitis(Eo E)was made,ages ranging from9 to 16 *** our patients were on acid suppression years after their EA repair,they presented with acute worsening of *** and/or barium swallow did not show stricture and biopsies revealed elevated eosinophil counts consistent with Eo *** of 4 patients improved symptomatically with the topical *** is important to note that all our patients have asthma and 3 out of 4 have tested positive for food *** of our patients developed recurrent anastomotic strictures that improved with the treatment of the Eo E.A previous case report linked the recurrence of esophageal strictures in patients with EA repair with Eo *** the Eo E was treated the strictures *** the other hand,based on our observation,Eo E could be present in patients without recurrent anastomotic *** appears to be a spectrum in the disease *** are suggesting that Eo E is a frequent concomitant problem in patients with history of congenital esophageal deformities,and for this reason any of these patients with refractory reflux symptoms or dysphagia(with or without anastomotic stricture)may benefit from an endoscopic evaluation with biopsies to rule out Eo E.

Fracture toughness determines materials＇ resistance to fracture, which is measured often using impact or bending tests. However, it is difficult to evaluate fracture toughness of coatings and small *** this article, using white irons as sample materials, we explore a possible approach of using electron work function（EWF） as an indicator in evaluating fracture toughness of hard metallic materials. This parameter is promising for being utilized to analyze toughness of protective coatings and small objects as well as bulk materials. Through comparison with results obtained from impact tests and elastic modulus measurement, effectiveness of this EWF approach is demonstrated.

The broke of a tailings dam from Vale S.A. destroyed a gigantic area killing 270 persons in Brumadinho/Brazil. Organizing activities after a mass disaster is a complex process that requires the involvement of many people and resources in the laboratory. To DNA identification of the victims, a daunting work had to be made by DNA laboratory staff in a collaborative effort with many partners. Efforts to implement good practice guidelines in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) have revealed several important aspects that need to change in the forensic DNA laboratory. This article highlights the challenges of implementing DVI best practice guidelines in resource-poor settings, but with professionals from different sectors engaged in the same goal of briefly identifying victims and helping families and society.
