The ma.a.ement of conta.ina.ed a.ea. with multiple sources of conta.ina.ion (mega.ites) is a.ong the biggest cha.lenges for the Bra.ilia. environmenta. a.encies, especia.ly beca.se a.uifers in big urba. a.ea., like the Sa. Pa.lo Metropolita. Region, a.e importa.t sources of wa.er for huma. supply purposes. One of the ma.n rea.ons tha. ha.per the proper ma.a.ement of urba. environmenta. problems is a.la.k of a.unified system where a.l informa.ion ca. be ea.ily integra.ed into regiona. studies. To a.dress this problem, a.method for da.a.integra.ion a.d ma.a.ement using a.Geogra.hic Informa.ion System (GIS) wa. developed. This method wa. a.plied to the ca.e of a.regiona. conta.ina.ion of a. a.uifer by chlorina.ed solvents a. a.former industria. district in Sa. Pa.lo city, na.ed Juruba.uba. but the fina. product might a.so be used for da.a.ma.a.ement of conta.ina.ed a.ea. for the entire Sta.e of Sa. Pa.lo. The ma.n result obta.ned wa. tha. the site-by-site a.proa.h for a.uifer conta.ina.ion ma.a.ement is ineffective. Furthermore, there a.e ma.y other suspected a.d potentia. sources of conta.ina.ion without a.y informa.ion a.a.la.le a.ter more tha. 10 yea.s since the conta.ina.ion problem wa. discovered a. the FIZ 131.

The investiga.ion of conta.ina.ed a.ea. in fra.tured a.uifers represents a.grea. technica. cha.lenge, due to the frequent conditions of heterogeneity a.d a.isotropy of these environments, which often ma.e it difficult to identify a.d predict pa.hwa.s of subsurfa.e conta.ina.ion. This work a.ms to contribute to the development of this subject, through the presenta.ion of the results of a. investiga.ion in which geophysica. logging tools a.d stra.dle pa.kers were used, which a.lowed the development of a.more suita.le hydrogeologica. conceptua. model of the study a.ea. Two boreholes were drilled a.d geophysica. logging (ga.ma. ca.iper a.d high resolution a.oustic televiewer) were used for the geologica.-structura. cha.a.teriza.ion of the a.uifer. Hea.pulse flowmeter a.d stra.dle pa.kers were then used to obta.n da.a.on hydra.lic potentia.s a.d flows a.d for the collection of discrete wa.er sa.ples for chemica. a.a.ysis. Two types of gneiss rocks were identified below the wea.hering zone (thickness >30 m), one with predomina.ce of ma.ic ba.ds, more wea.hered a.d with a.higher fra.ture density, up to 65 m, a.d a.other deeper one, with the predomina.ce of felsic ba.ds. Seven groups of fra.tures were defined, being those of Group 1, with low dip a.gles, the most frequent a.d importa.t for flow until 65 m, a.d Group 2 (N to NE-SW with high dips to W a.d NW) more frequent in deeper felsic gneisses. Downwa.d hydra.lic potentia.s were identified down to 65 m a.d upwa.d potentia.s from the bottom up to 65 m. a.hydra.lic test a.lowed identifying the occurrence of hydra.lic connection between the sha.low wea.hering zone a.d the underlying fra.tured a.uifer.

This a.ticle presents the results of a.forensic investiga.ion concerning the origin of hydroca.bons detected in the subsurfa.e soil of the residentia. neighborhood Volta.Gra.de IV, Volta.Redonda. RJ, Bra.il. Previous investiga.ions identified severa. a.ea. with concentra.ions of vola.ile orga.ic compounds (VOCs) a.d polycyclic a.oma.ic hydroca.bons (Pa.s) a.ove the Bra.ilia. regula.ory sta.da.ds of CONa.a.420/2009 within the study a.ea. Concern wa. ra.sed tha. these hydroca.bons might be derived from loca. steel mill wa.tes. This forensic investiga.ion determined tha. the VOCs in the residentia. soil a.e a.socia.ed with ga.oline a.d possibly diesel fuel oil relea.es into the subsurfa.e soils tha. a.e not a.socia.ed with the steel mill wa.te. The Pa.s in residentia. subsurfa.e soil genera.ly fell below ba.kground concentra.ions a.d a.e likely a.socia.ed with regiona. soot. The Pa.s in the three sa.ples with concentra.ions a.ove ba.kground (out of a.tota. of thirty-six sa.ples) exhibit compositiona. fea.ures simila. to coa. byproducts, such a. ta. a.d coke, possibly a.tributa.le to the steel mill opera.ion. This work discusses the geoforensic da.a.a.d chemica. signa.ures tha. support these findings.
