OBJETIVE: Increasing use of fertility drugs is considered the primary cause for the recent increase in dizygotic twinning in developed countries. However, dizygotic twinning has also been related to obesity in foreign populations. We sought to confirm this relationship in u.S. pregnancies, which predated widespread use of fertility drugs. mETHODS: We analyzed 51,783 pregnancies (561 twin) in the Collaborative Perinatal Project, which took place at 12 hospitals in the united States from 1959 to 1966. The occurrence of twinning was compared according to maternal self-reported prepregnant body mass index (BmI) of less than 20, 20-24.99, 25-29.99, and 30 kg/m2 or greater, before and after adjustment for confounding factors. RESuLTS: There was a statistically significant trend for increased risk of total twinning with increasing BmI (P monozygous twinning were not significantly related to BmI, but the odds of dizygous twinning were significantly related to increased BmI. After adjusting for maternal race, age, parity, and height, the odds of dizygous twinning were still significantly elevated among women with a BmI of 30 or more, and the trend for increasing risk of dizygous twinning with increasing BmI was significant (P = .001). The trend for increased twinning with increasing height was also significant. Women in the tallest quartile of height had a significantly increased odds ratio for dizygous twin pregnancies, although not of the same magnitude as women with BmI over 30. CONCLuSION: We confirmed the association of maternal weight and height with dizygotic twinning in a u.S. population among which fertility drugs were not a factor.

Logs and Snags in a Shola Forest of Kerala, Indi

In a tropical wet montane evergreen forest in the southern peninsular India, the estimated stocking of dead wood is 90 ± 3 stems·ha-1 and the total dead wood volume is 70.7 m3·ha-1. When the logs (downed dead trees more than 10.1 cm in diameter) constitute about 80% of the total deadwood stocking and volume, the rest is by snags (sound and rotting standing dead trees). Since the shola forest trees are characterized by their short stature with low to medium girth, about 89% of the total number of deadwood is of the size ranging from 10.1 cm to 40.0 cm in diameter. The estimated standing dead wood/standing live tree ratio is 0.16 indicating that the forest represents an old stand. Variations observed between logs and snags to change from a given decay class to the higher decay classes in two year period could be attributed to the facts that the logs would be in contact with soil for a relatively longer time and in turn would be in more contact with microorganisms and other decomposing agents.

Anthropogenic Pressure on Structure and Composition of a Shola Forest in Kerala, India

The montane closed evergreen forests found at altitudes above 1,800 m in the Western Ghats of India possess a distinct vegetation type and are called shola forests. Despite the fact that these forests are located in relatively inaccessible areas, they are still under anthropogenic pressure leading to continued habitat degradation and loss of biomass and biodiversity. A case study was conducted in mananvan shola, the largest shola forest in Kerala of Western Ghats, to recognize the impact of disturbance on vegetation structure, composition and regeneration pattern, to identify the socio-economic reasons for disturbance and to evolve strategies for its management. In the disturbed part of the forest, dominance of light demanding species in tree, shrub and herb communities has been recorded. Here even the dominance of exotic species in tree seedling, shrub and herb communities is prominent. Skewed girth class distribution of tree community with poor representation by the individuals of girth class 30.1 to 90.0 cm, is also an indication of the collection of small wood and poles from the forest. The RISQ (Ramakrishnan Index of Stand Quality) in the disturbed area of the forest is above 2.0 as against near to 1.0 in relatively undisturbed forest standssuggesting that the disturbance is intensive and thus natural recovery process would be slow. Socio- economic analysis in villages located near the shola forest revealed the fact that the people depended heavily on this forest for their livelihood. Thus, the crux and the success of future management and conservation strategy depend on how one can reduce the dependency of people on the shola vegetation. Enrichment planting in disturbed parts of shola, enhancement of firewood by raising energy plantations, as well as development of lemongrass and firewood based agroforestry systems and reduction of grazing pressure by developing silvopastoral systems are the major strategies for the conservation of these shola forests.

Perturbations in Earth’s Atmosphere over An Indian Region during the Total Solar Eclipse on 22 July 2009

During a total solar eclipse(TSE)on 22 July 2009,atmospheric perturbations were monitored from the surface to thermosphere to understand TSE’s impact on the meteorological(temperature,relative humidity,wind speed,and wind direction)and chemical(O3 and NOx)parameters around Kadapa(14.28°N,78.42°E),a tropical semi-arid region of *** this purpose,an experiment was conducted at Yogi Vemana university Campus,Kadapa,India,to measure the temperature,wind speed,wind direction,and concentrations of ozone(O3),NO,NO2,and NOx by using the automatic weather station(AWS)and O3 *** the eclipse day(22 July 2009),the surface observations at Kadapa showed a reduction in temperature(about 1.1℃)because of the solar *** of the thermal,dynamical(wind),and chemical parameters on the TSE day with control days[preceding(21 July 2009)and succeeding(23 July 2009)the TSE]illustrated the influence of solar *** the eclipse period,the O3 mixing ratio decreased,while NO2 and NOx increased;however,NO remained *** addition,radio occultation(RO)temperature profiles from Constellation Observing System for meteorology,Ionosphere,and Climate(COSmIC)/Formosat Satellite mission(FORmOSAT-3)and Thermosphere,Ionosphere,and mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics(TImED)satellites were utilized to understand the impact of TSE on dynamics of the middle and upper atmosphere from tropopause to the *** vertical resolution COSmIC observations revealed that during the solar eclipse,tropopause was cooler with twin peaks(double tropopause).The lower thermosphere between 110 and 130 km became warmer during the TSE,which might be caused by the dynamical response of the atmosphere in this region to the solar *** experimental data have provided very fine-scale variations of the atmospheric parameters both in time and height and also constituted a new set of results on TSE for further research.

Stability of stratified shear flows in channels with variable cross sections

For the instability problem of density stratified shear flows in sea straits with variable cross sections, a new semielliptical instability region is found. Rurthermore, the instability of the bounded shear layer is studied in two cases：（i） the density which takes two different constant values in two layers and （ii） the density which takes three different constant values in three layers. In both cases, the dispersion relation is found to be a quartic equation in the complex phase velocity. It is found that there are two unstable modes in a range of the wave numbers in the first case, whereas there is only one unstable mode in the second case.

Rare earth metal doped CeO_2-based catalytic materials for diesel soot oxidation at lower temperatures

In this work, the influence of trivalent rare-earth dopants（Sm and La） on the structure-activity properties of CeO2 was thoroughly studied for diesel soot oxidation. For this, an optimized 40% of Sm and La was incorporated into the CeO2 using a facile coprecipitation method from ultra-high dilute aqueous solutions. A systematic physicochemical characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction（XRD）, transmission electron microscopy（TEm）, Brumauer-Emmett-teller method（BET） surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, Raman, and H2-temperature programmed reduction（TPR） techniques. The soot oxidation efficiency of the catalysts was investigated using a thermogravimetric method. The XRD results suggested the formation of nanocrystalline single phase CeO2-Sm2O3 and CeO2-La2O3 solid solutions. The Sm- and La-doped CeO2 materials exhibited smaller crystallite size and higher BET surface area compared with the pure CeO2. Owing to the difference in the oxidation states of the dopants（Sm3＋ and La3＋） and the Ce4＋, a number of oxygen vacancies were generated in CeO2-Sm2O3 and CeO2-La2O3 samples. The H2-TPR studies evidenced the improved reducible nature of the CeO2-Sm2O3 and CeO2-La2O3 samples compared with the CeO2. It was found that the addition of Sm and La to the CeO2 outstandingly enhanced its catalytic efficiency for the oxidation of diesel soot. The observed 50% soot conversion temperatures for the CeO2-Sm2O3, CeO2-La2O3 and CeO2 were ~790, 843 and 864 K（loose contact）, respectively, and similar activity order was also found under the tight contact condition. The high soot oxidation efficacy of the CeO2-Sm2O3 sample was attributed to numerous catalytically favourable properties, like smaller crystallite size, larger surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and superior reducible nature.

Effect of Hardfaced Interlayer Thickness and Low Hydrogen Ferritic Capping on Ballistic Performance of Shielded metal Arc Welded Armour Steel Joints

Armour grade quenched and tempered steel closely confirming to AISI 4340 is well known for its superior ballistic performance and hence used in the fabrication of combat vehicles. The traditional fillers like austenitic stain- less steel showed poor ballistic performance of these welded joints as compared to the base metal. Attempts have been made to deposit hardfaced interlayer between austenitic stainless steel weld metals. Though this method, mar-- ginal improvements in ballistic performance can be yielded, and cracks were observed in between base metal and hardfaced layer. Thickness of the hardfaced interlayer plays a vital role for the effective ballistic performance. Thus, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of hardfaced interlayer thickness on ballistic performance of ar- mour steel welds. The results of effect of buttering, low hydrogen ferritic （LHF） filler and three different hardfaced layer thicknesses （4, 5.5 and 7 ram） on ballistid performance of shielded metal arc welded armour steel joints were given.
