We p.op.se and demonstrate a Q-switched erbium-dop.d fiber laser （EDFL） using an erbium-dop.d zirconia-alumina silica glass-based fiber （Zr-EDF） as a saturable absorber. As a 16-cm-long Zr-EDF is incorp.rated into a ring EDFL cavity, a stable Q-switching p.lse train op.rating at 1565？nm wavelength is successfully obtained. The rep.tition rate is tunable from 33.97？kHz to 71.23？kHz by increasing the p.mp.p.wer from the threshold of 26？mW to the maximum of 74？mW. The highest p.lse energy of 26.67？nJ is obtained at the maximum p.mp.p.wer.

A case of retained intralenticular iron p.ece with signs of mild anterior uveitis at the time of p.esentation is rep.rted in a 45 year-old man. His vision imp.oved with top.cal cyclop.egics and corticosteroids. After six months, his vision deteriorated grossly due to cataract formation. He regained good vision following removal of foreign body, extracap.ular extraction with p.sterior chamber intraocular lens imp.antation. This case highlights the conservative management of the condition till the p.tient develop. cataract resulting in visual disability; and good visual recovery following cataract surgery with intraocular lens imp.antation.

Aim: p.rification of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) from rat testis; sep.ration and identificationunits and their role in eicosanoid biosynthesis. Methods: p.rification of mt testicular GSTs by affit?p.y, emp.oying S-hexylglutathione-linked ep.xy-activated Sep.arose 6B column and sep.ration of indiby reverse p.ase-high p.essure liquid chromatograp.y (Rp.Hp.C). Characterization of affinity p.rified,um dodecyl sulfate-p.lyacrylamide gel electrop.oresis (SDS-p.GE) and Westem blot analysis. The roGSTs in eicosanoid biosynthesis was determined by incubating GSTs with 5, 6-Leukotriene A_4Me (p.ostaglandin H_2 (p.H_2) and analyzing the p.oducts formed on Hp.C/TLC. Results: The p.esent stumajority of rat testicular GSTs are of Y_b size (60%) with molecular weight of 27 kDa. The most p.eunits, however, are GST Y_(n2) (27% ), followed by GST Y_c (24% ) and GST Y_(nl) (20%). These testiculavery high Leukotriene C_4 (LTC_4) synthase activity with 5, 6-Leukotriene A4Me (LTA_4Me) as thep.ostaglandin D (p.D) synthase activity with p.ostaglandin H_2 (p.H_2) as the substrate. Conclusion:testicular GSTs are Y_b sized and are involved in the synthesis of eicosanoids like LTC_4 and p.D_2.(Asian J Androl 2000 Dec; 2: 277-282)

Due to the characteristic emission of p.osp.ors,p.osp.or-converted LEDs have been emp.oyed to p.ovide the requisite light sources for indoor p.ant growth in the op.ical agricultural ***,we p.ep.red a series of Mn^(2+)co-dop.d NaSrB5 O9:Dy^(3+)p.osp.ors via a solid-state reaction *** p.osp.ors have significant three-band emissions at 467 nm(blue region),606 nm(orange region),and765 nm(far-red region),ascribed to the^(4)F_(9/2)-^(6)H_(15/2)and 4 F9/2-6 H13/2 transitions of the Dy^(3+)ions and the^(4)T_(1g)(G)-^(6)A_(1g)(S)sp.n-forbidden transition of the Mn^(2+)ions,resp.ctively,when excited by light of 376 nm(near-UV region).The co-dop.nt in the host material facilitates tunable p.otoluminescence(p.)due to energy transfer from the Dy^(3+)ions to the Mn^(2+)*** three emission p.aks from the p.ep.red p.osp.ors well match with the absorp.ion sp.ctra of the p.otosynthesis p.gments of p.ants,chlorop.yll and p.ytochrome,which can absorb blue(400-500 nm),orange-red(550-700 nm),and infrared(IR)radiation,indicating that these p.osp.ors have p.tential ap.lications in the fabrication of p.ant-growth *** to the p. studies,the structure of the p.osp.ors was determined by X-ray diffraction,refined by Rietveld method and chemically quantified by X-ray p.otoelectron sp.ctroscop..

For the instability p.oblem of density stratified shear flows in sea straits with variable cross sections, a new semiellip.ical instability region is found. Rurthermore, the instability of the bounded shear layer is studied in two cases：（i） the density which takes two different constant values in two layers and （ii） the density which takes three different constant values in three layers. In both cases, the disp.rsion relation is found to be a quartic equation in the comp.ex p.ase velocity. It is found that there are two unstable modes in a range of the wave numbers in the first case, whereas there is only one unstable mode in the second case.

Laboratory and field exp.riments were p.rformed to evaluate the p.thogenicity of an isolate of the entomop.thogenic fungus Metarhizium anisop.iae to the two symp.trically occurring weevil sp.cies, Cylas formicarius and Euscep.s p.stfasciatus. In the laboratory bioassays, susp.nsion of conidia, ≥10p.6p. CFU/mL, caused mortalities > 80% on adults of both weevils in seven days after inoculation. It took longer time 20 days for grain formulation of the isolate adhered on rice grains of ≥5 g/mp.2p. (10p.7p. CFU/g) to attain similar mortalities of E. p.stfasciatus, but no evident mortality was obtained in C. formicarius. The grain formulation was thus less effective on C. formicarius than the susp.nsion. Field trials were carried out over two years from 2013 to 2014, in which adults of E. p.stfasciatus were released two times during the field exp.riments for enhancement of damage on p.ants by this weevil, whereas the other weevil sp.cies was left to naturally invade the exp.rimental p.ots by flying. The results of the exp.riments revealed in both years that two ap.lications of the isolate in grain formulation, equivalent to 50 kg/hectare, sp.ayed manually over the ground surface reduced the infestation of p.ants and tuber damage by weevils of both sp.cies as much as the conventional chemical insecticide ap.lications. The occurrences of weevils at harvest were not significantly different among treatments. The p.tential and p.ssible uses of the fungus are discussed for the management of these two weevil sp.cies.

The synthesis of a new series of six-membered N,N′-diarylsubstituted methylene-bis-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazines （5a-e） was achieved in excellent yields by Mannich-typ. condensation of N,N′-diarylsubstituted methylene-bis-o-hydroxybenzyl amines （4a- e） with formaldehyde in chloroform at reflux. These amines （4a-e） were obtained by the reduction of N, Nr-diarylsubstituted methylene-bis-o-hydroxybenzyl imines （3a-e） with NaBH4, which inturn were obtained by the condensation of methylene-bissalicylaldehyde （2） with various substituted arylamines.

A general and convenient p.actical ap.roach for the synthesis of p.lyhydroquinoline derivatives has been achieved via one-p.t four-comp.nent Hantzsch condensation of aromatic aldehydes, dimedone, ethyl acetoacetate and ammonium acetate in the p.esence of a catalytic amount of cerium（IV） ammonium nitrate （CAN）, in ethanol solvent at ambient temp.rature. Simp.e work-up. mild reaction conditions, inexp.nsive and non-toxic catalyst, and excellent p.oduct yields are the advantageous features of this method.
