Bile acid binding potential of foods and food fractions has been related to lowering the risk of heart disease and that of cancer. Steam cooking has been observed to significantly improve bile acid binding of green/leafy vegetables. It was hypothesized that other cooking methods could further improve the bile acid binding of various vegetables. Sautée cooking resulted in in vitro bile acid binding measured on a dry matter basis relative to cholestyramine of 14% for mustard greens and kale, 9% for broccoli, 8% for collard greens, 6% for cabbage, and 5% for green bell pepper. These results point to the significantly different (P ≤ 0.05) health promoting potential of mustard greens = kale > broccoli > collard greens > cabbage > green bell pepper. Sautéing significantly improved in vitro bile acid binding of mustard greens, kale, broccoli, cabbage and green bell pepper compared with steaming, boiling or raw (uncooked). Collard greens exhibited significantly higher bile acid binding by steaming compared with sautéing, boiling or raw. Data suggest that the cooking method with most heath promoting potential for mustard greens, kale, broccoli, cabbage and green bell pepper should be sautéing. Steaming should be used for collard greens as the cooking method. These green/leafy vegetables, when consumed regularly after sautéing, would promote a healthy lifestyle and have the potential to lower the risk of premature degenerative diseases.

Experimentally measured neutron activation cross sections are presented for the ^(65)Cu(n,0)^(62m)Cu,^(41) K(n,a)^(38C)l,and ^(65)Cu(n.2n)^(64)Cu reactions with detailed uncertainty *** neutron cross secions were measured at an incident energy of 14.92±0.02 meV,and the neutrons were based on the(d,n)a fusion *** ^(27) Al(n,a)^(24)Na reaction was used as a reference reaction for the normalization of the neutron *** pre-calib-rated lead-shielded HPGe detector was used to detect the residues'γ-ray *** data from the measured cross sections are compared to the previously measured cross sections from the EXFOR database,theoretically calculated cross sections using the TALYS and EmPIRE codes,and evaluated nuclear data.

Background: Staple line reinforcement material has been demonstrated to raise the burst pressure threshold after linear intestinal stapling. Numerous bioprosthetic materials have been utilized in surgical practice. Porcine urinary bladder matrix (ACell, Inc.) is an extracellular matrix material derived from porcine bladder used to reinforce surgically repaired soft tissue, and facilitate the body’s regenerative capacity. Objective: This study represents the first evaluation of urinary bladder matrix in gastrointestinal staple line reinforcement. methods: Pathogen-free pigs underwent midline laparotomy under general anesthesia. Small intestinal division was performed with an endoscopic linear stapler. Nineteen intestinal divisions were performed with urinary bladder matrix staple line reinforcement, and twenty divisions were unreinforced. Staple lines were then subjected to burst pressure analysis by intraluminal infusion of dyed Krebs solution at an infusion rate of 20 ml·min-1 under manometric monitoring. Upon visible staple line extravasation, intraluminal pressure was recorded. Results: Intestinal staple lines reinforced with urinary bladder matrix exhibited significantly higher burst pressure threshold (p mmHg, compared to 61 ± 37 mmHg for unreinforced staple lines. Conclusion: Staple line reinforcement using urinary bladder matrix acutely improves burst pressures of intestinal staple lines when compared with unreinforced staple lines. Its regenerative properties may confer a long-term advantage to staple line reinforcement. These findings, along with previous findings of constructive remodeling in the presence of urinary bladder matrix in treatment of the gastrointestinal system, suggest that UBm may serve a role in gastrointestinal staple line reinforcement.

Background:Glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification alone have a higher rate of refractive surprise compared to patients without *** risk is further increased with combined filtering ***,there are few and conflicting reports on the effect of combined phacoemulsification and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery(mIGS).Here,we look at refractive outcomes of glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification with and without Kahook Dual Blade(KDB)***:Retrospective chart review of 385 glaucomatous eyes of 281 patients,which underwent either phacoemulsification alone(n=309)or phacoemulsification with KDB goniotomy(n=76,phaco-KDB)at the University of *** main outcome was refractive surprise defined as the difference in target and postoperative refraction spherical equivalent greater than±0.5 Diopter(D).Results:Refractive surprise greater than±0.5 D occurred in 26.3%of eyes in the phaco-KDB group and 36.2%in the phacoemulsification group(p=0.11).Refractive surprise greater than±1.0 D occurred in 6.6%for the phacoKDB group and 9.7%for the phacoemulsification group(p=0.08).There was no significant difference in risk of refractive surprise when pre-operative IOP,axial length,keratometry or performance of KDB goniotomy were assessed in univariate ***:There was no difference between refractive outcomes of glaucomatous patients undergoing phacoemulsification with or without KDB goniotomy.

Study Objective: To assess the accuracy of respiration rate measurements and the ability to detect apnea by capnometry, impedance pneumography and a new method, acoustic respiration rate monitoring, in anesthetized patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. Design: Prospective observational study. Setting: Endoscopy procedures laboratory. Patients: 98 patients scheduled for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with propofol-based anesthesia. Interventions: Patients were monitored for respiration rate with acoustic respiration rate monitoring, capnometry and impedance pneumography and values were compared to the manual counting of breaths by observation of chest wall movements. Additionally, when any respiration rate monitor indicated a cessation of breathing for 30 seconds or greater, the presumed apnea was confirmed by direct observation of the patient for absence of chest wall movements. measurements and main Results: Bias and precision for respiration rate measurement was 0 ± 1.0 bpm for acoustic monitoring, 4.8 ± 15.1 bpm for capnometry and 0.4 ± 5.9 bpm for impedance pneumography. Sensitivity and specificity for detection of apnea was 73% and 93% for acoustic monitoring, 73% and 12% for capnometry and 45% and 93% for impedance pneumography. Conclusions: Acoustic respiration rate monitoring was found to be accurate for assessment of respiration rate and to have similar or better sensitivity and specificity for detection of apnea compared to capnometry and impedance pneumography in the setting of upper GI endoscopy.

Anti-hepatitis B virus(HBV)therapy leads to the emer- gence of mutant viral strains during the treatment of chronic hepatitis B with nucleos(t)ides analogues. The existence of HBV variants with primary antiviral resistance may be important for treatment choice. A method for the measurement of Lutein in Infant Formula

Lutein is an antioxidant that is deposited in the macular region of the eye and is crucial to macular function. Lutein is present in human milk and recently has been added to infant and toddler formulas. A method for the extraction and quantification of lutein from lutein-fortified infant formula and toddler milk products was developed. The lipids and carotenoids were extracted from the samples with ethanol and hexane:tetrahydrofuran. Polar xanthophylls were ex-tracted from the organic mixture with ethanol:water, leaving behind lipids and less polar carotenoids. The ethanol:water extracts were dried, reconstituted in mobile phase, and the lutein was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. A C30 carotenoid column and a mobile phase gradient of methyl-tert-butyl ether and methanol were used for the chromatographic separation. Validation data showed repeatability with relative stan-dard deviations mediate precision with relative standard deviations mcg lutein/L, and mcg lutein/L. Overall recoveries from sample matrix ranged from 88% to 106%. This liquid:liquid extraction method for the quantification of lutein in infant formulas is precise and accurate.
