Introduction:ecosystem goods and services(eGS)studies have had little impact on policy processes and real-world decision-making due to limited understanding of the interactions and feedbacks among ecological,social and economic *** we present an inter-and transdisciplinary analysis of global change impacts on eGS provision in a european mountain *** aim is to evaluate the projected influence of ecological,economic and social drivers on future eGS provision and to show possible ways to address the predominant limitations of eGS ***:The integrated findings from ecological experiments,mechanistic models of landscape dynamics,socio-economic land-use models,policy analysis and transdisciplinary stakeholder interactions are presented *** regionally downscaled global change scenarios,for a case study region near Visp,Switzerland(350 km2),were used to examine the impacts of climate and socio-economic changes on four ecosystem services,i.e.,food provision,timber production,net greenhouse gas emissions and protection from natural ***:Our simulation results reveal four key aspects that influence the future provision of mountain ***,we show the high spatial and temporal heterogeneity of eGS provision even in a small case study ***,we find that climate change impacts are much more pronounced for forest eGS,while changes to agricultural eGS result primarily from shifts in economic ***,our modeling results reveal the complex trade-offs associated with the different ***,simulations illustrate the importance of interactions between environmental shifts and economic *** discuss our simulation results with respect to both existing policy networks and transdisciplinary stakeholder ***:We describe a framework based on experiments and observations that effectively supports the integration of ecological processes into an integrative modeling chain of eGS provisio

Objective:To examine referral pattern,the timing of diagnostic/staging processes,and treatment initiation for new head and neck cancer patients in a community ***:Patients with a newly diagnosed previously untreated diagnosis of head neck cancer managed at Asplundh Cancer Pavilion/Abington Memorial Hospital from October 2018 to March *** of referral and preceding workup were examined as well as intervals between initial head and neck consult and various timepoints of treatment ***:One hundred and five patients were included in the *** primary referral sources were external general otolaryngology(56.3%).Oral surgery and dermatology obtained tissue biopsy approximately 80%of the time before *** average time from the ordering of initial staging positron emission tomography/computed tomography to finalized results was 14 days(range:10-25 days).Patients referred from dermatology and oral surgery were more likely to require single modality care,namely definitive surgical *** to treatment initiation average was 37 days(range:29-41 days).Patients with longer treatment times noted significantly higher times to both radiation and medical oncology consults(48.42 vs.18.13 days;Pe differences in treatment initiation times were identified based on referral source or extent of workup performed before head/neck surgery *** appears the largest opportunities for improvement in terms of reducing overall treatment length exist in the optimization of radiation initiation time.

AIM:To evaluate aspects of cognition impacted by individuals with and without normal tension ***:Fifty normal tension glaucoma(NTG)and 50 control patients≥50 y of age were recruited from the UCSF Department of *** data and glaucoma parameters were extracted from electronic medical records for both *** of executive function[executive Abilities:Measures and Instruments for Neurobehavioral evaluation and Research(eXAMINeR)]and learning and memory[California Verbal Learning Test–Second edition(CVLT-II)]were administered to both NTG and ***,handedness,best-corrected visual acuity,maximum intraocular pressure,optic nerve cup-todisc ratio,visual field and optic nerve optical coherence tomography parameters,and a measure of general health(Charlson Comorbidity Index)were compared between NTG and controls as well as within NTG *** linear regression was used to compare group performances on the eXAMINeR battery and CVLT-II while controlling for age,sex,and years of ***:NTG and controls were comparable with respect to age,sex,race,education,handedness,and the Charlson Comorbidity Index(P>0.05 for all).Performance on the eXAMINeR composite score and the CVLT-II did not differ between NTG and controls(P>0.05 for both).CONCLUSION:This is the first prospective study in which the cognitive function of subject with NTG were evaluated using a comprehensive,computerized neurocognitive *** with NTG do not perform worse than unaffected controls on tests of executive function,learning,and memor *** do not suppor t the hypothesis that individuals with NTG are at higher risk for cognitive dysfunction and/or dementia.

Refractive outcomes among glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract extraction with and without Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy

Background:Glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification alone have a higher rate of refractive surprise compared to patients without *** risk is further increased with combined filtering ***,there are few and conflicting reports on the effect of combined phacoemulsification and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery(MIGS).Here,we look at refractive outcomes of glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification with and without Kahook Dual Blade(KDB)***:Retrospective chart review of 385 glaucomatous eyes of 281 patients,which underwent either phacoemulsification alone(n=309)or phacoemulsification with KDB goniotomy(n=76,phaco-KDB)at the University of *** main outcome was refractive surprise defined as the difference in target and postoperative refraction spherical equivalent greater than±0.5 Diopter(D).Results:Refractive surprise greater than±0.5 D occurred in 26.3%of eyes in the phaco-KDB group and 36.2%in the phacoemulsification group(p=0.11).Refractive surprise greater than±1.0 D occurred in 6.6%for the phacoKDB group and 9.7%for the phacoemulsification group(p=0.08).There was no significant difference in risk of refractive surprise when pre-operative IOP,axial length,keratometry or performance of KDB goniotomy were assessed in univariate ***:There was no difference between refractive outcomes of glaucomatous patients undergoing phacoemulsification with or without KDB goniotomy.

Beyond one term of mentoring:A new approach to the research mentorship of undergraduate students

Background:The Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program(URMP)at the University of Pittsburgh(UPitt),School of Nursing(SoN)was envisioned and implemented in the 2008 e2009 academic year to expose undergraduate students to research early in their college educational ***,the URMP is a method to retain current students and attract new high school applicants to the ***:This article presents(1)the program's conceptualization,objectives,implementation,and outcomes using descriptive statistics and(2)the strengths of the URMP as well as the opportunities gained and lessons learned through conducting the ***:The program has shown success in attracting students to get involved in *** date,63.3%e75.7%of participating students reported gaining various research skills from the ***,URMP students have reported participating in conferences and creating close relationships with their mentors;indeed,97%of these students are interested in pursuing a graduate ***,the majority of URMP student participants(85.7%)have reported that not only the research experience met or exceeded their expectations,but also they were very satisfied with the research ***:Through the URMP,unlike a traditional didactic class,students can benefit from experiential learning,incentives to participate,and a mentoring relationship without the added pressure of obtaining grades at the end of the term.

＜正＞The National Academies of Sciences 2007 report,"Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century:A Vision and A Strategy" envisions toxicity testing using human cells in vitro to evaluate perturbations of cellular response networks and coupling results from these assays with computational systems biology and in vitro-in vivo extrapolations （IVIVe） to complete human safety assessments. To support this transition in toxicity testing,our laboratory is evaluating key cell response networks to develop proof of concept safety assessments for a series of prototype compounds and networks,including the DNA damage response *** DNA damage toxicity pathway project studies the p53-mediated DNA damage stress response in human cells to determine the underlying response circuitry for the p53 pathway and the dose response behavior for pathway activation after chemical induced DNA damage. This research effort has three overarching goals:（1） map the key determinants of cellular fate following DNA damage induced by chemicals with different mechanisms of action（indirect vs. direct DNA-damage）,（2） identify dose-dependent thresholds associated with cellular adaptation and toxicity（mutation） and（3） perform a risk assessment for a prototype chemical based on predicted regions of safety determined from in vitro *** work involved validation of the cell model and collection of a dense data stream comprised of dose response data at the gene, protein（p53,p-p53,p-H2AX,MDM2,p21, WIP1）,and cellular（cell cycle arrest,apoptosis, micronucleus;MN）level using prototype chemicals for DNA damage:etoposide（topoisomeraseⅡinhibition）,methylmethane sulfonate（DNA alkylation） and quercetin（oxidative damage）.18 point dose-response curves were generated for protein and cell fate endpoints in a p53 competent cell line（HT1080）using flow cytometry and high content *** genome transcriptomic analysis was also performed for each prototype chemical at several doses ranging from concentrations with no e

BACKGROUND Cytoreductive surgery(CRS)with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPeC)for peritoneal carcinomatosis can be performed in two ways:Open or closed abdominal *** To evaluate the impact of HIPeC method on post-operative and long-term survival *** Patients undergoing CRS with HIPeC from 2000-2017 were identified in the United States HIPeC collaborative ***-operative,recurrence,and overall survival outcomes were compared between those who received open vs closed *** Of the 1812 patients undergoing curative-intent CRS and HIPeC,372(21%)patients underwent open HIPeC and 1440(79%)underwent closed *** was no difference in re-operation or severe complications between the two *** HIPeC had higher rates of 90-d readmission while open HIPeC had a higher rate of 90-d *** multi-variable analysis,closed HIPeC technique was not a significant predictor for overall survival(hazards ratio:0.75,95%confidence interval:0.51-1.10,P=0.14)or recurrence-free survival(hazards ratio:1.39,95%confidence interval:1.00-1.93,P=0.05)in the entire *** findings remained consistent in the appendiceal and the colorectal *** In this multi-institutional analysis,the HIPeC method was not independently associated with relevant post-operative or long-term *** technique may be left to the discretion of the operating surgeon.

Development of a panel of unigene-derived polymorphic eST–SSR markers in lentil using public database information

Lentil(Lens culinaris Medik.), a diploid(2n = 14) with a genome size greater than 4000 Mbp, is an important cool season food legume grown worldwide. The availability of genomic resources is limited in this crop species. The objective of this study was to develop polymorphic markers in lentil using publicly available curated expressed sequence tag information(eSTs). In this study, 9513 eSTs were downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information(NCBI) database to develop unigene-based simple sequence repeat(SSR) markers. The eSTs were assembled into 4053 unigenes and then analyzed to identify 374 SSRs using the MISA microsatellite identification tool. Among the 374 SSRs, 26 compound SSRs were *** pairs for these SSRs were designed using Primer3 version 1.14. To classify the functional annotation of eSTs and eST–SSRs, BLASTx searches(using e-value 1 × 10-5) against the public UniP rot(http://***/) and NCBI(http://***/) databases were performed. Further functional annotation was performed using PLAZA(version3.0) comparative genomics and GO annotation was summarized using the Plant GO slim category. Among the synthesized 312 primers, 219 successfully amplified Lens DNA. A diverse panel of 24 Lens genotypes was used to identify polymorphic markers. A polymorphic set of 57 markers successfully discriminated the test genotypes. This set of polymorphic markers with functional annotation data could be used as molecular tools in lentil breeding.
