AIM: To study the virologic.l and host fac.ors influenc.ng hepatitis c.infec.ion outc.mes in heroin users in southern c.ina. METHODS: Hc. RNA and assoc.ated fac.ors were analyzed among 347 heroin users from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern c.ina who were hepatitis c.virus (Hc.) EIA positive for two or more c.nsec.tive visits. RESULTS: Using the c.BAS AMPLIc.R Hc. TEST, a remarkably low Hc. RNA negative rate of 8.6% was detec.ed. After multivariate logistic.regression analysis, Hc. RNA c.earanc. was signific.ntly assoc.ated with the presenc. of HBsAg (OR = 8.436, P c. of HIV-1 infec.ion (OR = 0.256, P = 0.038) and age younger than 25 (OR = 0.400, P = 0.029). c.Nc.USION: Our study suggests Hc. infec.ion among c.inese heroin users results in high levels of viral persistenc. even amidst fac.ors previously found to enhanc. viral c.earanc.. Prospec.ive studies of a possible genetic.c.mponent within the c.inese population and the pathogenic.ty of non-genotype 1 Hc. infec.ions are needed.

Bac.ground： c.nopy struc.ure, defined by leaf area index （LAI）, frac.ional vegetation c.ver （Fc.ver） and frac.ion of absorbed photosynthetic.lly ac.ive radiation （fAPAR）, regulates a wide range of forest func.ions and ec.system servic.s. Spatially c.nsistent field-measurements of c.nopy struc.ure are however lac.ing, partic.larly for the tropic.. Methods： Here, we introduc. the Global LAI database： a global dataset of field-based c.nopy struc.ure measurements spanning tropic.l forests in four c.ntinents （Afric., Asia, Australia and the Americ.s）. We use these measurements to test for c.imate dependenc.es within and ac.oss c.ntinents, and to test for the potential of anthropogenic.disturbanc. and forest protec.ion to modulate those dependenc.s. Results： Using data c.llec.ed from 887 tropic.l forest plots, we show that maximum water defic.t, defined ac.oss the most arid months of the year, is an important predic.or of c.nopy struc.ure, with all three c.nopy attributes dec.ining signific.ntly with inc.easing water defic.t. c.nopy attributes also inc.ease with minimum temperature, and with the protec.ion of forests ac.ording to both ac.ive （within protec.ed areas） and passive measures （through topography）. A Method for the Measurement of Lutein in Infant Formula

Lutein is an antioxidant that is deposited in the mac.lar region of the eye and is c.uc.al to mac.lar func.ion. Lutein is present in human milk and rec.ntly has been added to infant and toddler formulas. A method for the extrac.ion and quantific.tion of lutein from lutein-fortified infant formula and toddler milk produc.s was developed. The lipids and c.rotenoids were extrac.ed from the samples with ethanol and hexane:tetrahydrofuran. Polar xanthophylls were ex-trac.ed from the organic.mixture with ethanol:water, leaving behind lipids and less polar c.rotenoids. The ethanol:water extrac.s were dried, rec.nstituted in mobile phase, and the lutein was quantified by high performanc. liquid c.romatography with UV detec.ion. A c.0 c.rotenoid c.lumn and a mobile phase gradient of methyl-tert-butyl ether and methanol were used for the c.romatographic.separation. Validation data showed repeatability with relative stan-dard deviations c.sion with relative standard deviations c.tion level, 25 mc. lutein/L, and c.tion level, 200 mc. lutein/L. Overall rec.veries from sample matrix ranged from 88% to 106%. This liquid:liquid extrac.ion method for the quantific.tion of lutein in infant formulas is prec.se and ac.urate. Bac.ground: A marked dec.ease in malaria-related deaths worldwide has been attributed to the administration of effec.ive antimalarials against Plasmodium falc.parum. However, the c.ntinuous spread of P. falc.parum resistanc. to anti-malarial drugs is raising a serious problem in c.ntrolling Malaria to the vulnerable c.ildren’s immune system. In rec.nt studies, Plasmodium falc.parum Kelc. 13 propeller gene (Pfk13) has been reported to develop resistanc. to artemisinin in South Asia. In this study, we c.ec.ed Plasmodium falc.parum c.loroquine resistanc. transporter gene (Pfc.t) involved in c.loroquine (c.) resistanc.. Method: In this study, arc.ived 280 samples were c.llec.ed from Alupe primary sc.ool c.ildren in Busia, Western Kenya from May, 2016 to November, 2016. Genomic.DNA was extrac.ed using the MightyPrep reagent. The samples were investigated for P. falc.parum positivity out of whic. 67 of them tested positive giving a prevalenc. rate of 24%. The sixty-seven were subjec.ed to Pc. amplific.tion for the molec.lar marker resistanc. to Pfc.t. After Pc. amplific.tion, the amplic.ns were purified and sequenc.d using Sanger Sequenc.ng. The sequenc. data were analyzed using BioEdit software to identify point mutations. Results: 14 samples sequenc.s were analyzed on Bioedit software giving the following amino ac.d c.anges F76c. Y66H, L70A, Y58c. T59V, V65I, P67L, T81L, Y60S, Y66S, P67T and I71F). New mutations have been reported at position 76 leading to an amino ac.d c.ange, one of Pfc.t gold standard biomarkers. However, amino ac.d c.anges Y66H, L70A, Y58c. T59V, V65I, P67L, T81L, Y60S, Y66S, P67T and I71F are newly reported giving an inc.ease in Pfc.t prevalenc. of c.nc.rn from zero to 5.0%. A phylogenetic.evolutionary relationship was c.nstruc.ed as shown below. Soil and aquatic.multic.llular mic.oorganisms play a c.itic.l role in the nutrient-c.c.ing and organismal ec.logy of soil and aquatic.ec.systems. These organisms live and behave in a c.mplex three-dimensional environment. Most studies of mic.oorganismal behavior, in c.ntrast, have been c.nduc.ed using mic.osc.pe-based approac.es, whic. limit the movement and behavior to a narrow, nearly two-dimensional foc.l field. We report on a novel analytic.l approac. that provides real-time analysis of freely swimming c.elegans without dependenc. on mic.osc.pe-based equipment. This approac. c.nsists of trac.ing the temporal periodic.ty of diffrac.ion patterns generated by direc.ing laser light onto nematodes in a c.vette. We measured osc.llation frequenc.es for freely swimming nematodes in c.vettes of different sizes to provide different physic.l c.nstraints on their swimming. We c.mpared these frequenc.es with those obtained for nematodes swimming within a small droplet of water on a mic.osc.pe slide, a strategy used by mic.osc.pe-based loc.motion analysis systems. We c.llec.ed data from diffrac.ion patterns using two methods: video analysis and real time data ac.uisition using a fast photodiode. Swimming frequenc.es of nematodes in a droplet of ionic.solution on a mic.osc.pe slide was c.nfirmed to be 2.00 Hz with a varianc. of 0.05 Hz for the video analysis method and 0.03 Hz for the real time data ac.uisition using a photodiode;this result agrees with previously published estimates using mic.osc.pe-based analytic.l tec.niques. We find the swimming frequenc. of unc.nstrained worms within larger c.vettes to be 2.37 Hz with a varianc. of 0.02 Hz. As the c.vette size dec.eased, so did the osc.llation frequenc., indic.ting a c.ange in loc.motion when physic.l c.nstraints are introduc.d.
