Individuals with and without normal tension glaucoma exhibit comparable performance on tests of cognitive function

AIM:To evaluate aspects of cognition impacted by individuals with and without normal tension ***:Fifty normal tension glaucoma(nTG)and 50 control patients≥50 y of age were recruited from the UCsF Department of *** data and glaucoma parameters were extracted from electronic medical records for both *** of executive function[Executive Abilities:Measures and Instruments for neurobehavioral Evaluation and Research(EXAMInER)]and learning and memory[California Verbal Learning Test–second Edition(CVLT-II)]were administered to both nTG and ***,handedness,best-corrected visual acuity,maximum intraocular pressure,optic nerve cup-todisc ratio,visual field and optic nerve optical coherence tomography parameters,and a measure of general health(Charlson Comorbidity Index)were compared between nTG and controls as well as within nTG *** linear regression was used to compare group performances on the EXAMInER battery and CVLT-II while controlling for age,sex,and years of ***:nTG and controls were comparable with respect to age,sex,race,education,handedness,and the Charlson Comorbidity Index(P>0.05 for all).Performance on the EXAMInER composite score and the CVLT-II did not differ between nTG and controls(P>0.05 for both).COnCLUsIOn:This is the first prospective study in which the cognitive function of subject with nTG were evaluated using a comprehensive,computerized neurocognitive *** with nTG do not perform worse than unaffected controls on tests of executive function,learning,and memor *** do not suppor t the hypothesis that individuals with nTG are at higher risk for cognitive dysfunction and/or dementia.

The barotropic and baroclinic disturbances axisymmetrized by the barotropic basic vortex are examined in an idealized modeling framework consisting of two *** a Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approach,the radial propagation of a baroclinic disturbance is shown to be slower than a barotropic disturbance,resulting in a slower linear axisymmetrization for baroclinic *** slower-propagating baroclinic waves also cause more baroclinic asymmetric kinetic energy to be transferred directly to the barotropic symmetric vortex than from barotropic disturbances,resulting in a faster axisymmetrization process in the nonlinear baroclinic wave case than in the nonlinear barotropic wave case.

Development of a simple tool for diagnosis and initial approach to hypertension and pre-hypertension in children and youth

Background: Hypertension and pre-hypertension in children and adolescents are frequently missed despite current screening recommendations and the potential benefit for early diagnosis and intervention. Difficulty in interpretation of office blood pressure readings in children has been partially blamed for the significant under-diagnosis of childhood hypertension. The objective of our group was to develop and evaluate a simple tool designed to assist primary health care physicians to interpret office blood pressure readings in children and adolescents. Methods: A multi-disciplinary advisory group in our institution undertook the development of a diagnostic tool based on currently accepted gold standard parameters. Input from Family Physicians and Pediatricians was used in the design process. The tool was then distributed among Family Physicians in our catchment area and evaluated with a post-distribution survey. Results: A laminated one page summary of pediatric blood pressure parameters and initial approach to pediatric hypertension was created and distributed. Feedback from primary care physicians was mostly positive and supportive of this initiative. Conclusions: Innovating and simplifying the screening process for hypertension and pre-hypertension in childhood may promote early detection and intervention however the effect of such initiatives on the rate of diagnosis of pediatric hypertension will need to be tested prospectively by appropriately designed studies.

Recurrent foetal loss in early and late stages of pregnancy is a common problem of women affected by anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome. The therapeutic scheme consisting of associating aspirin and heparin has shown an improvement of the prognosis for the next pregnancies. We report 3 cases of anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome and pregnancy, and we underline the clinical, therapeutic and prognosis features of this syndrome.

Whereas a rich literature exists for estimating population genetic divergence, metrics of phenotypic trait divergence are lacking, particularly for comparing multiple traits among three or more populations. Here, we review and analyze via simula- tion Hedges＇ g, a widely used parametric estimate of effect size. Our analyses indicate that g is sensitive to a combination of unequal trait variances and unequal sample sizes among populations and to changes in the scale of measurement. We then go on to derive and explain a new, non-parametric distance measure, ＇Aft＇, which is caiculated based upon a joint cumulative distribution function （CDF） from all populations under study. More precisely, distances are measured in terms of the percentiles in this CDF at which each population＇s median lies. Ap combines many desirable features of other distance metrics into a single metric; namely, compared to other metrics, p is relatively insensitive to unequal variances and sample sizes among the populations sam- pied. Furthermore, a key feature of Ap--and our main motivation for developing it--is that it easily accommodates simultaneous comparisons of any number of traits across any number of populations. To exemplify its utility, we employ Ap to address a ques- tion related to the role of sexual selection in speciation： are sexual signals more divergent than ecological traits in closely related taxa？ Using traits of known function in closely related populations, we show that traits predictive of reproductive performance are indeed, more divergent and more sexually dimorphic than traits related to ecological adaptation [Current Zoology 58 （3）： 426-439 2012].

Trabectedin therapy as an emerging treatment strategy for recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer

Epithelial ovarian cancer(OC) is a common gynecologic malignancy in women. The standard treatment for OC is maximal cytoreductive surgical debulking followed by platinum-based chemotherapy. Despite the high response rate to primary therapy, approximately 85% of patients will develop recurrent ovarian cancer(ROC). This review identifies the clinical use of trabectedin in the treatment algorithm for ROC, with specific emphasis on platinum-sensitive ROC, for which trabectedin in combination with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin has been approved as a treatment protocol. The main mechanisms of action of trabectedin at the cellular level and in the tumor microenvironment is also discussed as bases for identifying biomarkers for selecting patients who may largely benefit from trabectedin-based therapies.

The effect of baroclinicity on vortex axisymmetrization is examined within a two-layer dynamical *** basic state vortices are constructed with varying degrees of baroclinicity：（i） barotropic,（ii） weak baroclinic,and （iii） strong *** linear and nonlinear evolution of wavenumber-2 baroclinic disturbances are examined in each of the three basic state *** results show that the radial propagating speed of the vortex Rossby wave at the lower level is larger with the stronger baroclinicity,resulting in a faster linear axisymmetrization process in the stronger baroclinic *** is found that the nonlinear axisymmetrization process takes the longest time in the strongest baroclinic vortex among the three different basic vortices due to the weaker kinetic energy transfer from asymmetric to symmetric circulations at the lower level.A major finding in this study is that the same initial asymmetric perturbation can have different effects on symmetric vortices depending on the initial vortex *** numerical weather prediction models,this implies that there exists a sensitivity of the subsequent structural and intensity change solely due to the specification of the initial vertical shear of the tropical cyclone vortex.

Joining of AZ31 and AZ91 Mg alloys by friction stir welding

Two dissimilar magnesium(Mg)alloy sheets,one with low aluminium(AZ31)and another with high aluminium(AZ91)content,were successfully joined by friction stir welding(FsW).The effect of process parameters on the formation of hot cracks was investigated.A sound metallurgical joint was obtained at optimized process parameters(1400 rpm with 25 mm/min feed)which contained fine grains and distributed β(Mg_(17)Al_(12))phase within the nugget *** increasing trend in the hardness measurements has also confirmed more amount of dissolution of aluminium within the nugget zone.A sharp interface between nugget zone and thermo mechanical affected zone(TMAZ)was clearly noticed at the AZ31 Mg alloy side(advancing)but not on the AZ91 Mg alloy side(retreating).From the results it can be concluded that FsW can be effectively used to join dissimilar metals,particularly difficult to process metals such as Mg alloys,and hot cracking can be completely eliminated by choosing appropriate process parameters to achieve sound joint.

Establishment of a Gene Expression system in Rice Chloroplast and Obtainment of PPT-Resistant Rice Plants

In contrast to the situation of random integration of foreign genes in nuclear transformation, the introduction of genes via chloroplast genetic engineering is characterized by site-specific pattern via homologous recombination. To establish an expression system for alien genes in rice chloroplast, the intergenic region of ndhF and trnL was selected as target for sitespecific integration of PPT-resistant bar gene in this study. Two DnA fragments suitable for homologous recombination were cloned from rice chloroplast genome DnA using PCR technique, and the chloroplast-specific expression vector pRB was constructed by fusing a modified 16s rRnA gene promoter to bar gene together with terminator ofpsbA gene 3 sequence. Chloroplast transformation was carried out by biolistic bombardment of sterile rice calli with the pRB construct. subsequently, the regenerated plantlets and seeds of progeny arising from reciprocal cross to the wild-type lines were obtained. Molecular analysis suggested that the bar gene has been integrated into rice chloroplast genome. Genetic analysis revealed that bar gene could be transmitted and expressed normally in chloroplast genome. Thus, the bar gene conferred not only selection pressure for the transformation of rice chloroplast genome, but PPT-resistant trait for rice plants as well. It is suggested that an efficient gene expression system in the rice chloroplast has been established by chloroplast transformation technique.
