Simulated perturbation in the sea-to-air flux of dimethylsulfi de and the impact on polar climate

Marine biogenic emission of dimethylsulfi de(DMS)has been well recognized as the main natural source of reduced sulfur to the remote marine atmosphere and has the potential to aff ect climate,especially in the polar *** used a global climate model(GcM)to investigate the impact on atmospheric chemistry from a change to the contemporary DMS fl ux to that which has been projected for the late 21 st *** perturbed simulation corresponded to conditions that pertained to a tripling of equivalent cO 2,which was estimated to occur by year 2090 based on current worst-case greenhouse gas emission *** changes in zonal mean DMS fl ux were applied to 50°S–70°S Antarctic(ANT)and 65°N–80°N Arctic(ARc)*** results indicate that there are clearly diff erent impacts after perturbation in the southern and northern polar *** quantities related to the sulfur cycle show a higher increase in ***,most sulfur compounds have higher peaks in *** perturbation in DMS fl ux leads to an increase of atmospheric DMS of about 45%in ANT and 33.6%in *** sulfur dioxide(SO 2)vertical integral increases around 43%in ANT and 7.5%in ***(SO 4)vertical integral increases by 17%in ANT and increases around 6%in *** emissions increases by 21%in ANT and increases by 9.7%in ***,oxidation of DMS by OH increases by 38.2%in ARc and by 15.17%in *** optical depth(AOD)increases by 4%in the ARc and by 17.5%in the ANT,and increases by 22.8%in austral *** importance of the perturbation of the biogenic source to future aerosol burden in polar regions leads to a cooling in surface temperature of 1 K in the ANT and 0.8 K in the ***,polar regions in the Antarctic Ocean will have a higher off setting eff ect on warming after DMS fl ux perturbation.

Retinal dysfunction is the most common cause of vision loss in several retinal *** has been estimated a great increase in these pathologies that are becoming more globally widespread and numerous over time,also supported by the life expectancy *** different types of retinopathies,we can account some that share causes,symptoms,and treatment including diabetic retinopathy,age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,and retinitis *** changes,environmental factors,and genetic predisposition might be some of the main causes that drive retinal tissue to chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration in these *** treatments available on the market contain compounds that efficiently ameliorate some of the important clinical features of these pathologies like stabilization of the intraocular pressure,reduction of eye inflammation,control of eye oxidative stress which are considered the major molecular mechanisms related to retinal ***,the most commonly used drugs are antiinflammatories,such as corticosteroids,antioxidant,hypotonic molecules and natural neuroprotective ***,these drugs,which are fundamental to treating disease symptoms,are not capable to cure the pathologies and so they are not life-changing for *** review provided an overview of current treatments on the market,but more interestingly,wants to be a quick window on the new treatments that are now in clinical ***,it has been here highlighted that the recent technical enhancement of the investigation methods to identify the various retinopathies causes might be used as a sort of“precise medicine”approach to tailor the identification of molecular pathways involved and potentially study a dedicated treatment for each *** approach includes the use of cutting-edge technologies like gene therapy and metabolomics.

Whole genome phylogeny of Gallus: introgression and data-type effects

Background: Previous phylogenetic studies that include the four recognized species of Gallus have resulted in a number of distinct topologies, with little agreement. Several factors could lead to the failure to converge on a consistent topology, including introgression, incomplete lineage sorting, different data types, or insufficient ***: We generated three novel whole genome assemblies for Gallus species, which we combined with data from the published genomes of Gallus gallus and Bambusicola thoracicus(a member of the sister genus to Gallus). To determine why previous studies have failed to converge on a single topology, we extracted large numbers of orthologous exons, introns, ultra-conserved elements, and conserved non-exonic elements from the genome assemblies. This provided more than 32 million base pairs of data that we used for concatenated maximum likelihood and multispecies coalescent analyses of ***: All of our analyses, regardless of data type, yielded a single, well-supported topology. We found some evidence for ancient introgression involving specific Gallus lineages as well as modest data type effects that had an impact on support and branch length estimates in specific analyses. However, the estimated gene tree spectra for all data types had a relatively good fit to their expectation given the multispecies ***: Overall, our data suggest that conflicts among previous studies probably reflect the use of smaller datasets(both in terms of number of sites and of loci) in those analyses. Our results demonstrate the importance of sampling large numbers of loci, each of which has a sufficient number of sites to provide robust estimates of gene trees. low-coverage whole genome sequencing, as we did here, represents a cost-effective means to generate the very large data sets that include multiple data types that enabled us to obtain a robust estimate of Gallus phylogeny.

AIM： TO assess whether polymorphisms in NOD2 and ATG16l1 affect cytokine responses and mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis （MAP） survival in monocytes from crohn＇s disease （cD） patients METHODS： Monocytes were isolated from peripheral blood of cD patients of known genotype for common single nucleotide polymorphisms of NOD2 and ATG16l1, Monocytes were challenged with MAP and bacterial per- sistence assessed at subsequent time-points. cytokine responses were assayed using a Milliplex multi-analyte profiling assay for 13 cytokines. RESUlTS： Monooltes heterozygous for a NOD2 polymorphism （R702W, P268S, or 1007fs） were more permissive for growth of MAP （P = 0.045） than those without. There was no effect of NOD2 genotype on subsequent cytokine expression. The T300A polymorphism of ATG16l1 did not affect growth of MAP in our model （P = 0.175）, but did increase expression of cytokines interleukin （Il）-10 （P = 0.047） and Il-6 （P = 0.019）. cONclUSION： cD-associated polymorphisms affected the eliminaUon of MAP from ex v/vo monooltes （NOD2）, or expression of certain oltokines （ATG16lI）, implying independent but contributory roles in the pathogenesis of cD.

Geographic variation in sexual selection and implications for speciation in the Barn Swallow

Barn Swallows(Hirundo rustica), a group of passerine birds comprised of six closely related subspecies, are well known throughout their nearly worldwide distribution, in part because of their close association with human settlements.A tractable species for both individual-based and population-level studies, Barn Swallows are a prominent model system in evolutionary, ecological, and behavioral research. Here we review work on sexual selection and population divergence in this species complex, focusing on comparative studies among populations and *** summarize variation in the targets of mate choice and in the information conveyed by sexually selected traits, and conclude that the benefits advertised by different traits may vary geographically. Finally, we consider the role of sexual selection as a driver of population divergence in this widespread and phenotypically variable species complex.

change point detection becomes increasingly important because it can support data analysis by providing labels to the data in an unsupervised *** the context of process data analytics,change points in the time series of process variables may have an important indication about the process *** example,in a batch process,the change points can correspond to the operations and phases defined by the batch *** identifying change points can assist labelling the time series *** unsupervised algorithms have been developed for change point detection,including the optimisation approachwhich minimises a cost functionwith certain penalties to search for the change *** Bayesian approach is another,which uses Bayesian statistics to calculate the posterior probability of a specific sample being a change *** paper investigates how the two approaches for change point detection can be applied to process data *** addition,a new type of cost function using Tikhonov regularisation is proposed for the optimisation approach to reduce irrelevant change points caused by randomness in the *** novelty lies in using regularisation-based cost functions to handle ill-posed problems of noisy *** results demonstrate that change point detection is useful for process data analytics because change points can produce data segments corresponding to different operating modes or varying conditions,which will be useful for other machine learning tasks.

Knowledge of the higher-level phylogenetic relationships of birds has grown substantially during the past two decades due to the application of genomic ***,the nomenclature of higher-level taxa has not become more stable,due to the lack of regulation of taxon names above the level of superfamily by the IcZN,and the usage of rank-based nomenclature,which is not tied to clades in a *** of regulation and the instability of rank-based nomenclature impede effective communication among *** review support for higher-level avian clades using a set of 10 phylogenomic data sets,and identify clades that are supported by congruency of at least four of *** provide formal definitions of the names of these clades based on the rules of the recently published *** names of 25 clades are here defined using minimum-crown-clade(n=23),minimum-clade(n=1)and maximum-crown-clade(n=1)*** new names are introduced here:Dinocrypturi,Pteroclimesites,Musophagotides,Phaethoquornithes and *** also review diagnostic apomorphies of the relevant clades,and identify known synonyms and *** establishing a formal link between higher-level taxon names and well-supported phylogenetic hypotheses,our phylogenetic definitions will provide a solid basis for the stabilization of avian higher-level nomenclature.

canopy gap size influences niche partitioning of the ground-layer plant community in a northern temperate forest

Aims The Gap Partitioning Hypothesis(GPH)posits that gaps create heterogeneity in resources crucial for tree regeneration in closed-canopy forests,allowing trees with contrasting strategies to coexist along resource *** studies have examined gap partitioning of temperate,ground-layer vascular *** used a ground-layer plant community of a temperate deciduous forest in northern Wisconsin,USA,as a model system to test whether the GPH extends to the relatively species-rich ground *** We used a well-replicated experimental approach that included a gap opening gradient(five gap sizes,6,10,20,30 and 46 m diameter,and undisturbed reference areas),a within-gap location gradient(gap edge to center),and a temporal gradient(0,2,6 and 13 years after gap creation).The data were observations of ground-layer plant abundance,published plant traits,and a modeled index of understory light *** ordinated the plant abundance data and evaluated the relationships of composition,traits and light environment by gap size,location along the forest-gap transect and time,with several approaches such as correlations,descriptive statistics,non-parametric tests of group differences and indicator species importance *** Findings Ground-layer plant composition and traits differed across gap sizes,within-gap locations and over *** of all sizes differed in composition from undisturbed areas,and all pair-wise combinations of gap size also differed in composition,except the 6 m from the 10-m *** gaps(46 m)also displayed within-gap compositional gradients from gap edge to center *** differences in gap size were evident 2 years after gap creation and,contrary to our hypotheses,remained different over the 13-year period,even in gaps with crown *** contrast to the neutral theory,species functional traits and microenvironmental conditions were related to variation in ground-layer *** with smaller seeds,low
