Nonpoint source pollution from agriculture is the main source of nitrogen and phosphorus in the stream systems of the Corn Belt region in the Midwestern *** eastern part of this region is comprised of the Ohio-Tennessee River Basin(OTRB),which is considered a key contributing area for water pollution and the Northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone.A point of crucial importance in this basin is therefore how intensive corn-based cropping systems for food and fuel production can be sustainable and coexist with a healthy water environment,not only under existing climate but also under climate change conditions in the *** address this issue,a OTRB integrated modeling system has been built with a greatly refined 12-digit subbasin structure based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)water quality model,which is capable of estimating landscape and in-stream water and pollutant yields in response to a wide array of alternative cropping and/or management strategies and climatic *** effects of three agricultural management scenarios on crop production and pollutant loads exported from the crop land of the OTRB to streams and rivers were evaluated:(1)expansion of continuous corn across the entire basin,(2)adoption of no-till on all corn and soybean fields in the region,(3)implementation of a winter cover crop within the baseline *** effects of each management scenario were evaluated both for current climate and projected mid-century(2046-2065)climates from seven global circulation models(GCMs).In both present and future climates each management scenario resulted in reduced erosion and nutrient loadings to surface water bodies compared to the baseline agricultural management,with cover crops causing the highest water pollution *** and soybean yields in the region were negligibly influenced from the agricultural management *** the other hand,both water quality and crop yield numbers under climate change deviated considerably f

Comparison of Urinary PAHs among Firefighters and Asphalt Pavers

Objective: The purpose of the investigation is to examine urinary biomarkers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure among firefighters and asphalt workers. Methods: Average concentrations of urinary PAHs were used for comparative analysis between groups of firefighters and asphalt pavers. Microsoft Excel was used to perform calculations and the t-test was utilized for statistical analysis. Results: When compared to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standard for smokers and non-smokers, firefighters demonstrated various statistically significant differences in urinary PAH concentrations. Asphalt workers had statistically significant higher urinary concentrations in three PAHs as compared to the NIST smoker mean. Conclusions: Firefighters did not demonstrate a substantial change in urinary PAH metabolite levels when compared to controls. Asphalt pavers experienced concentrations that were in some cases increased by orders of magnitude compared to controls.

Relationship between acute hypercarbia and hyperkalaemia during surgery

BACKGROUND The relationship between hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis is well described in the critical care setting;however,the relationship between acute respiratory acidosis and plasma potassium concentration is less well *** a controlled model of increasing levels of hypercarbia,we tested the hypothesis of whether increasing levels of hypercarbia are associated with changes in plasma potassium *** To determine whether increasing levels of hypercarbia are associated with changes in plasma potassium *** We performed a post-hoc study examining changes in serum potassium in 24 patients who received increased levels of hypercarbia during cardiac *** blood gases and plasma concentrations of potassium were measured at baseline,3 min prior to,and then every 3 min for 15 min during the intervention of *** primary endpoint was the absolute change in serum K+at 15 min compared to the baseline K+*** following secondary endpoints were evaluated:(1)The association between CO2 and serum K+concentration;and(2)The correlation between plasma pH and serum K+*** During the intervention,PaCO2 increased from 43.6 mmHg(95%CI:40.1 to 47.1)at pre-intervention to 83.9 mmHg(95%CI:78.0 to 89.8)at 15 min after intervention;Pl/l at baseline to 4.28(0.33)mmol/l at 15 min(effect size 0.09 mol/l;P=0.22).There was no significant correlation between PaCO2 and potassium(Pearson’s coefficient 0.06;95%CI:-0.09 to 0.21)or between pH and potassium(Pearson’s coefficient-0.07;95%CI:-0.22 to 0.09).CONClUSION Acute hypercarbia and subsequent respiratory acidaemia were not associated with hyperkalaemia in patients undergoing major surgery.

Prior industrial hygiene research involving wheel brake changing on a light general aviation aircraft has shown negligible potential for asbestos fiber exposure to mechanics that perform such work. This is despite the use of organic-style brake friction pads that contained asbestos. It has been otherwise established that chrysotile asbestos is largely degraded to a non-crystalline, amorphous substance by the heat and mechanical shear forces inherent to the braking process. However, trace (le have been found in brake wear dust. Disc-style brakes, the types used on aircraft, are of open design, such that wear dust is typically dispersed into the ambient air during and after brake application. For fixed-gear aircraft, the brake assemblies are also subject to substantial air velocities while the aircraft is in flight. This research was undertaken to measure and characterize the airflows experienced by aircraft wheel assemblies during takeoff, cruise, and landing maneuvers. No wear (brake) dust was observed at any point during the study.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the FOlFIRI regimen in patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC) after the failure of gemcitabine and platinum salts. METHODS: All consecutive patients with histologically confirmed, metastatic PAC and World Health Organiza-tion performance status (PS) ≤ 2 received FOlFIRI-1 [irinotecan 180 mg/m2 on day 1 and leucovorin 400 mg/m2 followed by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) 400 mg/m2 bolus, then 5-FU 2400 mg/m2 as a 46-h infusion, biweekly] or FOlFIRI-3 (irinotecan 100 mg/m2 on day 1 and leucovorin 400 mg/m2, then 5-FU 2400 mg/m2 as a 46-h infusion and irinotecan 100 mg/m2 repeated on day 3, biweekly) after failure of gemcitabine and platinum-based chemotherapies as a systematic policy in two institutions between January 2005 and May 2010. Tumor response, time to progression (TTP), overall survival rate (OS) and grade 3-4 toxicities were retrospectively studied. Subgroup analyses were performed to search for prognostic factors. RESUlTS: Sixty-three patients (52.4% male, median age 59 years) were analyzed. Among them, 42.9% were PS 0, 38.1% were PS 1 and 19.0% were PS 2. Fifty one patients (81.0%) had liver metastases. Before the FOlFIRI regimen, patients had received 1 line (n = 19), 2 lines (n = 39) or 3 lines (n = 5) of chemotherapy. Median TTP obtained with the line before FOlFIRI was 3.9 mo (95% CI: 3.4-5.3 mo). A total of 480 cycles was completed (median: 6 cycles, range: 1-51 cycles). The main reason for discontinuing FOlFIRI was tumor progression (90.3%). Tumor control was achieved in 25 patients (39.7%) (partial response: n = 5, stable disease: n = 20) with FOlFIRI. Median TTP was 3.0 mo (95% CI: 2.1-3.9 mo) and median OS was 6.6 mo (95% CI: 5.3-8.1 mo). Dose adaptation was required in 36 patients (57.1%). Fifteen patients (23.8%) had grade 3-4 toxicities, mainly hematological (n = 11) or digestive (n = 4). Febrile neutropenia occurred in 3 patients. There was no toxic death. G protein-coupled receptors （GPCRs） are involved in all human physiological systems where they are responsible for transducing extracellular signals into cells. GPCRs signal in response to a diverse array of stimuli including light, hormones, and lipids, where these signals affect downstream cascades to impact both health and disease states. Yet, despite their importance as therapeutic tar- gets, detailed molecular structures of only 30 GPCRs have been determined to date. A key challenge to their structure determination is adequate protein expression. Here we report the quantification of protein expression in an insect cell expression system for all 826 human GPCRs using two different fusion constructs. Expression char- acteristics are analyzed in aggregate and among each of the five distinct subfamilies. These data can be used to identify trends related to GPCR expression between dif- ferent fusion constructs and between different GPCR families, and to prioritize lead candidates for future structure determination feasibility.

The association between continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices(CF-lVADs)and gastrointestinal(GI)bleeding from angiodysplasia is well ***,the association between continuous-flow biventricular assist devices(CF-BIVADs)and bleeding angiodysplasia is less *** report a case of GI bleeding from a patient with a *** location of GI bleeding was identified by nuclear red blood cell bleeding *** vascular malformation leading to the bleed was identified and localized on angiography and then by *** intensity of bleeding,reflected by number of units of packed red blood cells needed for normalization of hemoglobin,as well as the time to onset of bleeding after transplantation,are similar to that seen in the literature for CF-lVADs and pulsatile *** angiography only detected a dilated late draining vein,pathology demonstrated the presence of both arterial and venous dilation in the submucosa,vascular abnormalities characteristic of a late arteriovenous malformation.

Effects of Fe(Ⅱ) on anammox community activity and physiologic response

Though there are many literatures studying the effects of iron on anammox process, these studies only focus on the reactor performance and/or the microbial community changes, the detailed effects and mechanisms of Fe(Ⅱ) on anammox bacterial activity and physiology have not been explored. In this study, four Fe(Ⅱ) concentrations(0.03, 0.09, 0.12 and 0.75 mmol/l) were employed into the enriched anammox culture. The enhancement and inhibition effects of Fe(Ⅱ) on anammox process and bacterial physiology were investigated. It was discovered that the anammox process and bacterial growth were enhanced by 0.09 and 0.12 mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ), in which the 0.12 mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ) had advantage in stimulating the total anammox activity and bacterial abundance, while 0.09 mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ) enhanced the relative anammox activity better. The anammox activity could be inhibited by 0.75mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ) immediately, while the inhibition was recoverable. Both 0.09 and 0.12 mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ)induced more genes being expressed, while didn't show a stimulation on the relative expression level of functional genes. And anammox bacteria showed a stress response to detoxify the Fe inhibition once inhibited by 0.75 mmol/l Fe(Ⅱ). This study provides more information about physiologic response of anammox bacteria to external influence(enhancement and inhibition), and may also instruct the future application of anammox process in treating various sources of wastewater(containing external disturbances such as heavy metals) and/or different treatment strategies(*** side-stream to main-stream).

In the search of lead-free piezoelectric materials,ceramic processing techniques offer potential tools to increase the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties in addition to new chemical *** of pure BNKT16(Bi0.5(Na0.84K0.16)0.5TiO3)phase were synthesized by sol–gel method with a low crystallization temperature(750℃).Ceramic samples were sintered by pressureless sintering(PlS),sinter-forging(SF),and spark plasma sintering(SPS)***,morphological,and chemical characterizations were performed by XRD,Raman,EDS,and *** samples by PlS and SF exhibit rod-like grains associated to bismuth *** highest remanent polarization(11.05μC/cm2),coercive field(26.2 kV/mm),and piezoelectric coefficient(165 pC/N)were obtained for SF *** piezoresponse force microscopy(PFM)analysis shows that the crystallites at the nanoscale exhibit piezoelectric phenomenon and the highest piezoelectric response is reported for PlS *** presence of the rhombohedral phase,the increase in grain and crystallite size,and the oriented rod-like inclusions favoring the crystallographic texture are facts that enhance the piezoelectric coefficient for BNKT16 piezoceramics.
