Hong Kong has a high concentration of developments on hilly terrain in close proximity to man-made slopes and natural *** of the high seasonal rainfall,these man-made slopes and natural hillsides would pose a risk to the public as manifested by a death toll of 470 people due to landslides since the late *** 1977,the Government of the Hong Kong SAR embarked on a systematic programme,known as the Landslip Preventive Measure(LPM)Programme,to retroft substandard man-made *** 1977 to 2010,about 4500 substandard government man-made slopes have been upgraded through engineering *** the period,the Programme had evolved progressively in response to Government’s internal demand for continuous improvement and rising public expectation for slope *** 2010,the Government implemented the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation(LPMit)Programme to dovetail with the LPM Programme,with the focus on retroftting the remaining moderate-risk substandard man-made slopes and mitigating systematically the natural terrain landslide risk pursuant to the"react-to-known"hazard *** paper presents the evolution of the LPM and LPMit Programmes as well as the insight on landslide prevention and mitigation through engineering works.

Extrapyramidal movement disorders are common in chronic schizophrenia, and may be an intrinsic feature of the illness as well as related to antipsychotic drug treatment. Similar dysfunctions at illness onset may have implications for outcome, and for under- standing the mechanisms of illness. The obj.ctives were to examine the clinical correlates of pre-treatment movement disorders at first episode of psychosis, and determine associations with neuropsychological function and striatal structure. Never medicated subj.cts were recruited from consecutive admissions to Early Psychosis Programs with defined catchment areas in Hong Kong, China, and Halifax, Canada. Standardized clinical, neuropsychological and brain imaging assessments were carried out at baseline and following acute and long term treatment with typical or atypical antipsychotic drugs. At the Hong Kong site, we studied 84 subj.cts with first episode psychosis (n = 10 with EPS). At the Halifax site, we studied 40 subj.cts with first episode psychosis (n = 17 with EPS), and 23 healthy comparison subj.cts. Subj.cts with movement disorders prior to treatment (EPS+) had higher total PANSS scores at baseline (mean elevation 19.9% Hong Kong, P = 0.016; 14.7% Halifax, P = 0.049). In subj.cts treated with atypical antipsychotics (all Halifax), EPS+ status at baseline predicted more movement disorders at long term follow up (P = 0.0005). In both cohorts, EPS+ subj.cts had poorer acute symptomatic treatment response assessed with the PANSS (Hong Kong P = 0.005; Halifax P = 0.017). Neuropsychological impairment related to executive dysfunction appeared greater in a small sam- ple of EPS+ subj.cts (Hong Kong, effect size 0.26-0.27, P j.cts (Halifax P = 0.042), and correlations between striatal volumes and age were different in the EPS+ group. Microbial electrosynthesis(MES)is an emerging technology for producing chemicals,and coupling MES to anodic waste oxidation can simultaneously increase the competitiveness and allow additional functions to be *** this study,MES was used for the simultaneous removal of ammonia from synthetic urine and production of acetate from CO_(2).Using graphite anode,83.2%±5.3%ammonia removal and 28.4%±9.9%total nitrogen removal was achieved,with an energy consumption of 1.32 kWh/g N for total nitrogen removal,0.45 kWh/g N for ammonia nitrogen removal,and 0.044 kWh/g for acetate *** boron-doped diamond(BDD)anode,70.9%±12.1%ammonia removal and 51.5%±11.8%total nitrogen removal was obtained,with an energy consumption of 0.84 kWh/g N for total nitrogen removal,0.61 kWh/g N for ammonia nitrogen removal,and 0.043 kWh/g for acetate production.A difference in nitrate accumulation explained the difference of total nitrogen removal *** of ammonia and acetate across the membrane deteriorated the performance of *** results are important for the development of novel elcctricity-driven technologies for chemical production and pollution removal.

The presence of municipal wastewater at the intake of a maj.r drinking water treatment facility located on Lake Ontario was examined using fluorescence data collected during a period of continuous *** addition,controlled mixing of lake water and wastewater sampled from a local treatment facility were conducted using a bench-scale fluorescence system to quantify observed changes in natural organic *** linear regression was applied to components derived from parallel factors *** resulting mean absolute error for predicted wastewater level was 0.22%(V/V,wastewater/lake water),indicating that wastewater detection at below 1.0%(V/V)was *** of sucralose,a wastewater indicator,were conducted for treated wastewater as well as surface water collected at two intake locations on Lake *** suggested minimal wastewater contribution at the drinking water intake.A wastewater detection model using a moving baseline was developed and applied to continuous fluorescence data collected at one of the drinking water intakes,which agreed well with sucralose ***,the simulated addition of 1.0%(V/V)of wastewater/wastewater was detectable in 89%of samples analyzed,demonstrating the utility of fluorescence-based wastewater monitoring.

A remarkable rate enhancement technique has been devised for a typical nucleophilic displacement reaction by using triphase catalytic materials based on tetraoctylammonium exchange forms of hectorite clay. Pseudo-first order rate constants (kobs) for the conversion of 1-bromobutane to the corresponding chloride under triphase conditions using the clay catalyst in the presence of various polar cosolvents have been observed. The results here have shown that the addition of a cosolvent increases the catalytic activity of the triphase system by several fold. In addition, the results have demonstrated that each cosolvent has a unique concentration for achieving an optimum reaction rate.

Obj.ctive:To characterize proteins and other nutrients in striatin(DLBS0333),a bioactive protein fraction isolated from snakehead fish(Channa striata) and to investigate its wound healing ***:Proteins and other constituents in striatin were characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis,two dimension electrophoresis,immunoblotting assay,spectroscopy and high performance liquid *** wound healing activity of striatin was studied in vitro using 3T3 fibroblast cells and in vivo using wound-induced animal *** parameters related to wound healing process were ***:Striatin contained four maj.r bioactive proteins with approximate molecular weight of 8.3,10.9,15.4 and 16.7 *** addition to proteins,striatin also contained amino acids(10 essential and 7 non essential amino acids),fatty acids(palmitic acid,oleic acid,stearic acid,linoleic acid,arachidonic acid),vitamins(vitamin A,vitamin B_6)and other nutrients(carbohydrate,dietary fiber,biotin,choline,inositol,L-carnitine,selenium) which are potential for wound healing and increasing serum albumin *** with striatin both in vitro and in vivo indicated that striatin enhanced cell ***-induced animal model treated with striatin showed significantly faster wound healing process,as confirmed by wound size and faster serum albumin level *** striatin does not contain albumin,this bioactive protein fraction may lead to enhanced albumin synthesis in the liver thereby maintaining the blood albumin ***,consuming striatin is a better option to improve albumin levels in diseased condition and the condition of being ***:Striatin(DLBS0333) is a potential natural compound for accelerating wound healing in conditions such as post surgery and post partum,and increasing albumin level.
