Analyzing Changes in Maize Leaves Orientation due to GxExM Using an Automatic Method from RGB Images

The sowing pattern has an important impact on light interception efficiency in maize by determining the spatial distribution of leaves within the *** orientation is an important architectural trait determining maize canopies light *** studies have indicated how maize genotypes may adapt leaves orientation to avoid mutual shading with neighboring plants as a plastic response to intraspecific *** goal of the present study is 2-fold:firstly,to propose and validate an automatic algorithm(Automatic Leaf Azimuth Estimation from Midrib detection[ALAEM])based on leaves midrib detection in vertical red green blue(RGB)images to describe leaves orientation at the canopy level;and secondly,to describe genotypic and environmental differences in leaves orientation in a panel of 5 maize hybrids sowing at 2 densities(6 and 12 plants.m^(−2))and 2 row spacing(0.4 and 0.8 m)over 2 different sites in southern *** ALAEM algorithm was validated against in situ annotations of leaves orientation,showing a satisfactory agreement(root mean square[RMSE]error=0.1,R^(2)=0.35)in the proportion of leaves oriented perpendicular to rows direction across sowing patterns,genotypes,and *** results from ALAEM permitted to identify significant differences in leaves orientation associated to leaves intraspecific *** both experiments,a progressive increase in the proportion of leaves oriented perpendicular to the row is observed when the rectangularity of the sowing pattern increases from 1(6 plants.m^(−2),0.4 m row spacing)towards 8(12 plants.m^(−2),0.8 m row spacing).Significant differences among the 5 cultivars were found,with 2 hybrids exhibiting,systematically,a more plastic behavior with a significantly higher proportion of leaves oriented perpendicularly to avoid overlapping with neighbor plants at high *** in leaves orientation were also found between experiments in a squared sowing pattern(6 plants.m^(−2),0.4 m

Distribution of the related weevil species Sitophilus oryzae and S. zeamais in Brazil

The genus Sitophilus （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） encompasses species of great economic importance as stored grain pests worldwide. Among these species, the maize and the rice weevils （Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus oryzae, respectively） are partic- ularly important in warmer climates. These two weevils exhibit closely morphological and ecological resemblance making difficult their proper identification and recognition of their distribution in grain-producing regions. Both species are recorded in South America and particularly in Brazil, but their respective distribution and prevalence were not yet assessed in the region. Therefore, several insect samples throughout Brazil were collected and subjected to morphological identification using male genitalia and also using molec- ular identification with species-specific primers designed for clear recognition of both the species. The primers were designed for the specific amplification of a gene fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I, which exhibited high specificity during our prelimi- nary experiments with insects from six populations of known species （either S. zeamais or S. oryzae）. Both identification strategies provided the same results indicating preva- lence of the maize weevil S. zeamais throughout the country. Two hypotheses may explain such prevalence：（i） the likely host preference ofS. zeamais for maize because this is the most cultivated cereal in Brazil, and （ii） the prevalence ofS. zeamais in tropical regions as compared with S. oryzae, which is more disseminated in subtropical and temperate regions.

Designing a Nano Infrastructure for Brazil’s Amazon Water Resources: A Quadruple Helix Approach

This paper elaborates on the role of green technologies and innovations in “greening” Brazil’s Amazon region fresh water resources. The paper elaborates on the development of an innovation quadruple helix to better manage the region’s water resources. Brazil accounts for close to 12% of the earth’s fresh water reserves, while most of it is in the Amazon region. The preservation of water reserves on a global scale is of paramount importance in the 21st century. Brazil, however, has not managed its water resources effectively leading to the increasing pollution and contamination of its Amazonian water resources.

Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies and Applications

The current need to fasten the implementation of renewable energies greatly depends on the development of competitive storage devices, and while there is not a single technology which is likely capable to competitively cover the wide range of possible demands, electrochemical technologies are one of the most promising for many of them. For the realization of this promise, new materials fulfilling criteria such as high energy density, high power density, competitive cost, reliability, and environmental compatibility need to be developed in the near future. Electrochemical energy storage devices can be classified into two main technologies： supercapacitors and batteries （including redox flow batteries）. Materials and applications for these technologies are discussed and compared, listing current status, technical and strategic challenges.

Malaria is a major problem for European travelers to endemic *** Romania during 1980-2007 approximately 20 imported cases were detected *** aim of our short communication is to present 2 interesting cases of imported malaria detected in Western *** first patienl was a 20-year female who traveled to India and acquired an infection with Plasmodium vivax(***).The second patient,a 60-year female,contracted an infection with Plasmodium falciparum(***) during a trip to Ghana:the evolution of the disease was severe with many complications and the patient finally *** cases presented revealed the difficulties in establishing a correct diagnosis of malaria in a non-endemic country, consequences of an incomplete taken *** history should always represent a mandatory part of a well conducted *** the same time,we must underline the importance of a correct and complete prophylaxis prior to every departure to tropical countries.

Direct costs of carcinoid syndrome diarrhea among adults in the United States

BACKGROUND The burden of carcinoid syndrome(CS)among patients with neuroendocrine tumors is substantial and has been shown to result in increased healthcare resource use and *** incremental burden of CS diarrhea(CSD)is less well understood,particularly among working age adults who make up a large proportion of the population of patients with *** To estimate the direct medical costs of CSD to a self-insured employer in the United *** CS patients with and without CSD were identified in the IBM®MarketScan®Database,including the Medicare Supplemental Coordination of Benefits *** patients had≥1 medical claim for CS with continuous health plan enrollment for≥12 mo prior to their first CS diagnosis and for≥30 d after,no claims for acromegaly,and no clinical trial participation during the study period(2014-2016).Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics,including comorbidities and treatment,were analyzed using descriptive *** of healthcare resource use and costs were compared between patients with and without CSD,including Emergency Department(ED)visits,hospital admissions and length of stay,physician office visits,outpatient services,and prescription claims,using univariate and multivariate analyses to evaluate associations of CSD with healthcare resource use and costs,controlling for baseline *** Overall,6855 patients with CS were identified of which 4,043 were eligible for the analysis(1352 with CSD,2691 with CS only).Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were similar between groups with the exception of age,underlying tumor type,and health insurance *** with CSD were older,had more comorbidities,and received more somatostatin analog therapy at *** with CSD required greater use of healthcare resources and incurred higher costs than their peers without CSD,including hospitalizations(44%vs 25%)and ED visits(55%vs 31%).The total adjusted annual healthcare costs

Evaluation of atherosclerotic lesions in cholesterol-fed mice during treatment with paclitaxel in lipid nanoparticles： a magnetic resonance imaging study

Cholesterol-core nanoparticles （LDE） have been shown to be recognized by low-density lipoprotein receptors （LDLR） after administration; therefore, LDE is an ideal vehicle to deliver drug with targeting property. Paclitaxel, when incorporated into LDE, promotes atherosclerosis regression with reduced drug toxicity in rabbits through LDLR. Here, we tested whether LDE-paclitaxel could still be effective in reducing diet-induced atherosclerosis in a mouse model without LDLR. Nineteen LDLR knockout male mice were fed 1% cholesterol for 12 weeks. Then, 12 animals received 4-weekly intraperitoneal LDE-paclitaxel （4 mg/kg） while 7 controls received saline solution. On week 12 and 16, in vivo MR/of the aortic roots was performed. Aorta macroscopy was made after euthanasia. Reduction ofatherosclerotic lesions was observed. LDE-paclitaxel treatment resulted in reduction of wall area （14%） and stenosis （22%） by MR/and 33% by macroscopy. Thus, LDE-paclitaxel may produce pharmacological effects through LDE uptake by mechanisms other than LDLR.

Determination of 3-MeO-PCP in human blood and urine in a fatal intoxication case,with a specific focus on metabolites identification

3-Methoxyphencyclidine(3-MeO-PCP)is a new psychoactive substance that belongs to the phencyclidines family,first identified in Europe in *** drug presents a stronger binding to N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA)receptors when compared to phencyclidine,which results in more potent effects,even at low *** few articles have been published regarding 3-MeO-PCP in forensic *** this paper,the authors present a fatal 3-MeO-PCP intoxication *** addition to the detection of the parent drug,metabolites were investigated in urine and,for the first time in the scientific literature,in blood.3-MeO-PCP and its metabolites were quantitated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system(LC-MS/MS).Identification was confirmed by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry(LC-HRMS).3-MeO-PCP tested positive in femoral blood(3525 ng/mL)and urine(7384 ng/mL).The femoral blood concentration was higher than the fatal concentrations range already reported in the literature(from 50 to 3200 ng/mL).3-MeO-PCP metabolites,including O-demethyl-3-MeO-PCP,piperidine-OH-3-MeO-PCP,O-demethyl-piperidine-di-OH-3-MeO-PCP and piperidine-di-OH-3-MeO-PCP,were detected in *** addition,two new metabolites,O-demethyl-piperidine-OH-3-MeO-PCP and O-demethyl-cyclohexyl-OH,were identified in both blood and ***,due to the lack of reference material on the market,it was not possible to measure the concentration of these ***,the ratios between the metabolites and the parent drug were useful to estimate their analytical response and *** this time,considering the low ratios(<1)between metabolites and parent drug,metabolites testing does not seem useful to increase the detection window of the drug.
