Blooms of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria are a problem worldwide. Microcystin is a liver hepatotoxin commonly found in bodies of water and is produced mainly by the genus Microcystis. The aim of the present study was to develop and assess a competitive PCR method for the quantification of toxic and non-toxic Microcystis cells using the cpcBA and mcyB genes, which are respectively involved in the formation of phycocyanin and biosynthesis of microcystin. For the acquisition of competitor DNA, amplification sequences were carried out of the “cell DNA equivalent” of microcystin-producing (BCCUSP18) and non-microcystin-producing (BCCUSP03) strains of Microcystis spp. using primers described in the literature as well as others designed for the present study. The method was successfully developed, as competitor DNA was constructed and co-amplified with the target DNA. Competitive PCR proved to be useful in quantifying toxic and non-toxic cells of Microcystis spp. strains, representing a helpful methodology tool to study isolated toxin-producing cyanobacteria.

There are several mechanical models to describe the DNA phenomenology. In this work the DNA denaturation is studied under thermodynamical and dynamical point of view using the well known Peyrard-Bishop model. The thermodynamics analysis using the transfer integral operator method is briefly reviewed. In particular, the lattice size is discussed and a conjecture about the minimum energy to denaturation is proposed. In terms of the dynamical aspects of the model, the equations of motion for the system are integrated and the results determine the energy density where the denatura- tion occurs. The behavior of the lattice near the phase transition is analyzed. The relation between the thermodynamical and dynamical results is discussed.

Association between Ebstein Anomaly and Coronary Artery Disease： A Report Case

The intention of this article is to report a case of a 26 years old man presenting a rare combination of congenital heart disease （Ebstein anomaly） and coronary artery disease. EA （Ebstein anomaly） has a prevalence of 1% of all congenital heart diseases, as CAD （coronary artery disease） has a little evidence in literature＇s registries when occurred in individuals with 40 years old or less. Therefore, this case report rises attention to the rarity of those patologies, which individually are already considerably rare and, in this case, it comes associated what turns this diagnosis excepcional, highlighting the complexity of the treatment.

This article presents a study on the impact of video frame losses on the quality perceived by users. Video compression standards, such as MPEG, use a sequence of frames called Group of Pictures (GOP), which is a video compression method which a frame is expressed in terms of one or more neighboring frames. This dependence between frames impacts directly in the quality because a loss of a reference frame prevents the decoding of other frames in GOP, thereby reducing the user-perceived quality. The assessment of quality in this article is estimated by Peak Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR), which compares the original and the received images. Computer simulations were used to show that the degradation on the quality may vary for different patterns of GOPs and type of lost frames.

Simulation description of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottle, blowing through the injection stretch blow molding process, using computer aided engineering softwares and analysis by finite elements method in order to better fit the bottle project using this material and weight reduction. The work was conducted from existing preforms and focused on the design process of the bottles, approach in which the available literature is scarce or nonexistent. The design of a bottle was executed, applied and validated through parametric computer aided design software and finite elements method analysis, allowing the simulation of the blowing process from data input to the process variables listed in the available literature. Using this approach, we simulate the blowing process and the mechanical demands related to the application with the aim of assessing the efficiency of packaging design and enable an efficient and correct sizing of the bottles. The data obtained in simulations were verified by the fabrication of prototypes using the same material, preform and process data considered in the virtual environment. The results indicate the feasibility of producing 500 mL bottles for carbonated soft drinks from 18 g preforms, with a reduction of up to 21% on weight of the packaging, keeping the standard bottle finish PCO-1810-28 mm.

The agency theory indicates the existence of costs as a way to mitigate conflicts between shareholders and managers, including： managerial compensation program, acquisition of shares by managers, monitoring of executives, and controlling shareholders. This study aims to determine the relevance of some variables related to compensation programs and of other determinants of the corporate debt level. It has considered a sample of 89 firms, which were analyzed through logistic regression （cross section）. The model created has indicated a level of predictive assertiveness of approximately 87%.

This article presents the results of a forensic investigation concerning the origin of hydrocarbons detected in the subsurface soil of the residential neighborhood Volta Grande IV, Volta Redonda, RJ, Brazil. Previous investigations identified several areas with concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) above the Brazilian regulatory standards of CONAMA 420/2009 within the study area. Concern was raised that these hydrocarbons might be derived from local steel mill wastes. This forensic investigation determined that the VOCs in the residential soil are associated with gasoline and possibly diesel fuel oil releases into the subsurface soils that are not associated with the steel mill waste. The PAHs in residential subsurface soil generally fell below background concentrations and are likely associated with regional soot. The PAHs in the three samples with concentrations above background (out of a total of thirty-six samples) exhibit compositional features similar to coal byproducts, such as tar and coke, possibly attributable to the steel mill operation. This work discusses the geoforensic data and chemical signatures that support these findings.
