High-Yielding and Carotenoid-Rich Clones Identification among Thirty-One Cassava Clones with Colored Flesh

Cassava is the second most important food crop produced and consumed in Côte d’Ivoire, after yam. White-fleshed varieties, which are low in total carotenoids, are widespread, while coloured-fleshed varieties (yellow to orange), carotenoid-rich, are rare. However, the consumption of carotenoid-rich cassava varieties could help to alleviate health problems related to vitamin A deficiency. This study aims to identify high agronomic performance, carotenoid-rich and versatile cassava varieties among 31 clones introduced from IITA. They were compared to three controls, Bocou2, Yacé and Bonou2, according to agronomic and technological parameters. Results found that out of the 31 clones, six (I082425, I084157, I084563, I085894, I083774 and I070520) were more productive than the control Bocou2 (46.01 ± 14.88 t·ha-1);the clone I083774 had the highest yield (55.88 ± 6.16 t·ha-1). Twenty-one clones had dry matter contents, ranging from 37% to 41%, significantly similar to Yacé control (42.70%). Thirteen clones had highest total carotenoid contents than the control Bocou2. Clones I084157 and I082425 recorded the highest total carotenoid contents with 17.57 ± 1.92 and 18.39 ± 1.19 μg·g-1 respectively. Overall 31 tested clones were fibrous to varying degrees while 27 clones had mild or neutral post-cooking flavours and 17 clones had poor cooking. The clone I084157 is the best compromise of agronomic and technological desired traits.

Effect of Tetracera potatoria Aqueous Extract on Mellitus Diabetes and Its Complication Preventions in Wistar Rats

Background: Diabetes is becoming a serious public health issue with expensive treatment that is less accessible to all patients in least developing countries. The traditional African pharmacopoeia offers accessible and lower cost alternative to diabetics’ treatments. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Tetracera potatoria, on diabetes and the prevention of its complications in Wistar rats. In order to evaluate respectively the hypoglycaemic, anti-hyperglycaemic and antidiabetic activities. Methods: an aqueous extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg was tested on normal rats and orally hyperglycaemic challenged rats by 10% glucose (3 g/kg), to induce diabetes by intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan at 50 mg/kg. The glycaemia monitoring, and the determination of biological parameters were accessed through ASAT, ALAT, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glycated haemoglobin tests. Results: The aqueous extract at related doses administered to diabetic rats has significantly reduced the mean blood glucose levels in all diabetic rats at 55.56%, 63.34% and 62.38% compared to healthy control batches in the three batches treated. These doses improved the change in body weight compared to the healthy control group. There was an increase of 110.9%, 107.67% and 109.31% respectively after four weeks of treatment compared to the initial weight of the rats. The significant increase (p Conclusions: These results showed hypoglycaemic and antihy-perglycaemic, antidiabetic effects, preventing the installation of some diabetes related complications. The phytochemical parameters of the extract showed chemical compounds which would act the reduction of the putative diabetes and its complications. These indicators show the importance of medicinal plants on diabetes treatment.

Objective: Sinogenic subdural empyema remains a neurosurgical emergency, even in the antibiotic era. Sickle cell disease is one of the most frequent hereditary diseases, with an incidence of around 4 in 1000 newborns, which necessitates special considerations before a neurosurgical intervention. Case Description: The case of a 10-year-old boy with sickle cell disease type HbSC is reported, who presented with meningitis about ten days after a nasal sinusitis. CT and MRI showed subdural empyema and immediate intravenous antibiotic treatment was started. The patient received partial exchange transfusion. Craniotomy allowed evacuation of empyema and repairment of a frontobasal dural defect. Endoscopic evacuation of the paranasal sinuses was done in the same anesthesia. After initial good recovery, the patient developed right sided paresis with epileptic seizures a few days later. CT scan revealed three distant empyema recurrencies which were evacuated in a second neurosurgical intervention. The child recovered without neurologic deficit, and control MRI examinations three and twelve months after surgery found frontal and parietal dural thickening as sequelae. Conclusion: Urgent neurosurgical interventions in the presence of sickle cell anemia require special anesthesiologic preparations. An immediate, multidisciplinary approach can lead to a good outcome in these life-threatening situations.

FPGA Resources Reduction by a Multiplexing Technique Applied on ANN-Based Harmonics Extraction Algorithms

In this paper, a multiplexing technique is applied on a neural harmonics extraction method, based on an efficient formulation of the instantaneous reactive power theory. This approach can be used in nonlinear loads compensation with APFs （Active Power Filters）. The architecture for reference current generation, synchronized by a neural phase lock-loop, is composed of three Adaline neural networks. This leads to an important consumption of field programmable gate array resources during implementation. The proposed technique uses only one Adaline and keeps the immunity of the approach under non-sinusoidal and unbalanced conditions of voltage. Simulation results of the neural harmonics detection system connected to a reference current controller show balanced and sinusoidal source currents under various conditions. Results with experimental measurement made on an APF test bench demonstrate its good performances on harmonics filtering. Moreover, the simplified structure from the new approach called mp-q method shows a significant resource reduction.

Epidemiological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Aspects of Locally Advanced and/or Metastatic Breast Cancers at the Chu-Mel of Cotonou

Introduction: Breast cancer mortality remains high in most developing countries. Benin Republic does not yet have a technical platform required for the diagnosis and effective management of breast cancer “according to the recommendations”. Objective: To study the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of locally advanced and/or metastatic breast cancers at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire-de la Mère et de l’Enfant Lagune (CHU-MEL) of Cotonou from 2018 to 2021. Study Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study with a descriptive purpose, carried out from January 1, 2018 to September 30, 2021 in the Gynaecology-Obstetrics Section of the CHU-MEL of Cotonou. The study population was patients diagnosed with locally advanced and/or metastatic breast cancers. Results: At the end of the study, 63 cases of locally advanced and/or metastatic breast cancer were recorded in 80 cases of breast cancer;a 74.11% prevalence of locally advanced and metastatic breast cancer. The mean age of the patients was 42.6 years. The main reason for consultation was the discovery of a mass in the breast (65.1%). Clinically, an orange peel was noted in 39.6%. Mammography (47.6%) and breast ultrasonography (42.9%) were the reference imaging workups for breast cancer diagnosis. Histopathologically, infiltrating ductal carcinoma (94.1%) was the predominant type with Scarff-Bloom and Richardson (SBR) grade II found in 35.3%. Progesterone and estrogen receptors were present in 42.9%. Mastectomy with axillary node dissection was the surgical treatment performed (80%) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (39.6%). Only one patient had received radiotherapy. No patient received hormone therapy. Conclusion: Locally advanced and metastatic cancers remain a real public health problem. It is essential that major investments be made in order to improve both their diagnosis and management.

Hydrogeochemical Characteristics and Quality Assessment of Surface Water in an Agricultural Area in Equatorial Africa: The Mungo River Basin, South West Cameroon, Central Africa

The Mungo River and its tributaries represent the major sources of water supply for agriculture and drinking purposes for the Douala city and the south western agricultural region of Cameroon. In this study, the surface water hydrochemistry was investigated at 12 locations to determine the hydrochemical and heavy metals characteristics and to assess the suitability for drinking and irrigational purposes. Results of water samples collected along the main channel and tributaries showed that the major ions were dominated by Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ > NH4+ and > HCO3- > SO42- > Cl- > F- > PO43- , with concentrations varying between 0 to 60 mg/l. Heavy metal concentrations were relatively weak, dominated by Fe > Mn > As > Cd > Zn > Se. The main hydrochemical facies types revealed primarily 52% Ca-Na-HCO3 and 48% Ca-Mg-HCO3. Base on Gibbs diagram and relative ion ratios, the hydrochemical characteristics are derived from weathering of silicate rocks and atmospheric source. The influence of anthropogenic factors including agro-industrial activities on the hydrochemical characteristics was less marked. The chemical composition of the water samples was compared with the drinking water standards and only the concentration of Fe was above the WHO guide limits in a single sample at Passi. The evaluation of the water quality for irrigation showed that 95% of water samples are suitable for irrigation in almost all soil types. Psychosocial Experience in Goiter Patients

Introduction: Goiter often poses aesthetic disgrace problem. The psychosocial impacts of goiter, in particular in woman may be significant. Objective: studying the psychological and social impacts of the disease in goiter patients within the African context and their consequences on the treatment. Methods: It was a transversal study that took place from May 1to July 31, 2011 in the Collines and Donga departments situated in the center and the north of Benin. The study consisted of a survey conducted through an individual discussion based on questionnaire submitted to goiter patients who accepted to provide their answers. Results: This survey involved 86 patients of which 83 women and 3 men. Their average age was 43.7 ± 13.41. Goiter was noticeable in the totality of the patients. 68.6% of patients declared that they experienced on daily basis the shame caused by the disease. 66% thought that it was a natural disease;however, 27.9% believed that it was caused by bewitchment or sorcery. 46.5% and 37.2% resorted to modern and indigenous medicine respectively;16.3% made no therapeutic move. Despite the psychosocial impacts of the disease, 50% of the patients rejected surgical intervention possibility. The core motives they raised were lack of financial means (34.8%), disease recurrence fright (23.3%), anesthesia fright (16.3%), and surgical fright (14%). Conclusion: Despite the psychological impacts of the disease, strong resistance exists probably more on cultural aspect than the motives mentioned by thyroidectomy patients.

Optimization of Cellulase Production Conditions in Bacteria Isolated from Soils in Brazzaville

Objective: The objective of the present study is to optimize cellulase production in five strains: (Pantoea dispersa MLTBY6 (MT646430.1);Pseudomonas aeruginosa MLTBM2 (MT646431.1);Pseudomonas monteilii MLTBC10 (MT674682.1);Bacillus subtilis MLTBC5 (MT674681.1) and Lysinibacillus fusiformis MLTBB7 selected cellulase producers isolated from soils in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Materials and Methods: The cellulolytic activity of the selected cellulase-producing strains was determined by transferring the strains to a petri dish containing CMC culture medium with the following composition: cellulose 1%, K2HPO4 0.2%, MgSO4 0.03%, peptone 1%, (NH4)2SO4 0.2% adjusted to a pH value of 7, previously poured and then frozen. The dishes were incubated in an oven at 37°C for 48 hours. The petri dishes were then flooded with 1% lugol for 15 minutes. A positive reading is indicated by the formation of a hydrolysis zone, the diameters of the hydrolysis zone were measured with a ruler. Strains with a broad lysis spectrum were selected. Optimisation of cellulase production by five bacterial strains isolated from the soil was done using the following factors: temperature and pH. Results: The production of cellulase showed that these strains showed a high production of cellulase at pH values between 5.6 and 9 with an optimum of pH = 8 and temperature values between 35°C and 40°C with an optimum at temperature t = 40°C. Of the carbon sources used, two sources, namely glucose and galactose, showed a high production of cellulase compared to the other carbon sources. However, the two nitrogen sources, ammonium sulphate and urea, were favourable for cellulase production by all five strains. Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common symptom of gynecology that causes social and economic disruption in the lives of women who suffer from it. Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with dysmenorrhea in Benin in 2017. Method: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study from 17 April to 17 May 2017. It involved 822 women aged 15 to 44 selected by a cluster sampling technique. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, functional signs, and medical care was collected using questionnaires.
