Resistance to acid degradation,sorptivity,and setting time of geopolymer mortars

Experimental evaluations were conducted to determine the water sorptivity,setting time,and resistance to a highly acidic environment,of mortar with alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag(GBS)binder and also of combinations of fly ash and GBS *** were activated using mixtures of NaOH and Na_(2)SiO_(3)*** molarity of NaOH in the mixtures ranged from 10 mol·L^(−1)to 16 mol·L^(−1),and the Na_(2)SiO_(3)/NaOH ratio was varied from 1.5 to *** samples were produced using three binder combinations:1)GBS as the only binder;2)blended binder with a slag-to-fly ash ratio of 3:1;and 3)mixed binder with 1:1 ratio of slag to fly *** samples were mixed and cured at(22±2)°C till the day of the *** impact of activator solution alkalinity,activator ratio Na_(2)SiO_(3)/NaOH,GBS content on the rate of water absorption were *** 7,28,and 90 d of immersion in a 10%sulfuric acid solution,the resistance of a geopolymer matrix to degradation was assessed by measuring the change in sample *** influence of solution alkalinity and relative fly ash content on setting times was ***-activated mortar with a slag-to-fly ash ratio of 3:1 had the least sorptivity compared to the two other binder combinations,at each curing age,and for mortars made with each of the NaOH alkaline activator *** sorptivity decreased with age and sodium hydroxide concentrations,suggesting the production of geopolymerization *** reduction in weight of sample occurred after immersion in the strong acid H_(2)SO_(4)solution for three months,regardless of binder *** was due to the synthesis of hydration and geopolymerization products in the presence of curing water,which outweighed the degradation of the geopolymer matrix caused by sulfuric acid.

Study of the prevalence and association of ocular chlamydial conjunctivitis in women with genital infection by Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium and Candida albicans attending outpatient clinic

AIMTo determine the association between chlamydial conjunctivitis and genital infection by Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium and Candida albicans, in addition to the possible relationship between cultured bacterial pathogens and oculogenital chlamydial *** study was performed on 100 (50 symptomatic and 50 asymptomatic) women attending the Gynecological and Obstetric outpatient clinic of alzahra hospital, alazhar University. Simultaneously a conjunctival swab was taken from these patients. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done on DNA extracted from both vaginal and conjunctival swab samples. Culture for both vaginal and conjunctival swabs was also *** albicans was the predominant organism isolated by culture in 20% and 40% of conjunctival and vaginal swabs respectively. By the PCR method, ocular Chlamydia trachomatis was present in 60% of symptomatic women, while genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection was present in 30% of symptomatic women. The results of this method also indicated that 25/50 (50%) vaginal swabs were positive with PCR for Candida albicans versus 15/50 (30%) were PCR positive in conjunctival swab. Mycoplasma genitalium was present in only 10% of vaginal swabs. Concomitant oculogenital PCR positive results for Chlamydia trachomatis and Candida albicans were 30% and 28% *** Chlamydia trachomatis was associated with genital Chlamydia trachomatis in a high percentage of women followed by Candida albicans. Cultured bacterial organisms do not play a role in enhancement of Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Safety and efficacy of ultrasound ciliary plasty as a primary intervention in glaucoma patients

AIM: To evaluate the safety and the efficacy of the ultrasound ciliary plasty(UCP) on the intraocular pressure(IOP) control in glaucomatous eyes without previous glaucoma ***: A retrospective study included patients with primary and secondary glaucoma who underwent UCP in Dar al Shifa Hospital, Kuwait between January 2017 to June 2018. High-intensity focused ultrasound procedures were performed under peribulbar anesthesia using the 2^(nd) generation probe with 8 s duration of each of the 6 shots. Complete ophthalmologic examinations were scheduled pre-treatment, and at 1 d, 1 wk, 1, 3, 6 and 12 mo posttreatment. Primary outcomes were the IOP reduction and success rates at 12 mo, while the secondary outcomes were the occurrence of vision threatening complications and visual ***: The records of 62 eyes of 62 patients were analyzed with mean age of 63.8 y(67.7% males). There was statistically significant reduction in the mean IOP from 35.2±8.3 mm Hg before treatment to 20.6±8.7 mm Hg at 12^(th) month(Palified success was achieved in 77.4% of eyes at 12 mo. No major intra-or posttreatment complications were ***: Second-generation UCP prove to be effective in reducing IOP in naive glaucoma patients with lower success rates in cases of neovascular and uveitic glaucomas.

Evaluation of patients with dry eye disease for conjunctival Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma urealyticum

AIM：To determine the possibility of the development of dry eye disease（DED） as a result of persistent infection with Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma urealyticum in the conjunctiva of ***： This study was conducted on 58 patients of age range 20-50 y,diagnosed with DED confirmed by Schirmer I test and tear breakup *** non-dry eye control group included 27 subjects of the same *** specimens were collected as conjunctival scrapings and swabs divided into three groups： the first used for bacterial culture,the second and third taken to detect Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma urealyticum by direct fluorescent antibody（DFA） assay and polymerase chain reaction（PCR） method. RESULTS： Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in 65.5% and 76% of DED patients by DFA and PCR methods *** urealyticum was found in 44.8% of DED infected patients using the PCR *** organisms were identified in only 37.9% of DED patients found to be *** subjects had a 22%detection rate of Chlamydia trachomatis by DFA assay versus a 7% detection rate by PCR; while Ureaplasma urealyticum was detected in 3.7% of the controls by PCR *** conjunctival culture revealed that gram positive microorganisms represented 75% of isolates with coagulase negative Staphylococci the most common（50%） followed by Staphylococcus aureus（20%）,whereas gram negative microorganisms occurred in 25% of cases,isolating Moraxella *** the most frequent organism. CONCLUSION： Our results tend to point out that Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma urealyticum were detected in a moderate percentage of patients with DED,and could be a fair possibility for its *** is more reliable in detecting Chlamydia trachomatis than DFA *** presence of isolated conjunctival bacterial microflora can be of some potential value.

A critical review of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems: Degradation mechanisms and removing strategies

Plastic waste discarded into aquatic environments gradually degrades into smaller fragments,known as microplastics(MPs),which range in size from 0.05 to 5 *** ubiquity of MPs poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and,by extension,human health,as these particles are ingested by various marine organisms including zooplankton,crustaceans,and fish,eventually entering the human food *** contamination threatens the entire ecological balance,encompassing food safety and the health of aquatic ***,developing effective MP removal technologies has emerged as a critical area of ***,we summarize the mechanisms and recently reported strategies for removing MPs from aquatic *** combining physical and chemical pretreatments with microbial degradation have shown promise in decomposing *** such as bacteria,fungi,algae,and specific enzymes are being leveraged in MP remediation *** advancements have focused on innovative methods such as membrane bioreactors,synthetic biology,organosilane-based techniques,biofilm-mediated remediation,and nanomaterial-enabled strategies,with nano-enabled technologies demonstrating substantial potential to enhance MP removal *** review aims to stimulate further innovation in effective MP removal methods,promoting environmental and social well-being.

Effects of variable properties on MHD heat and mass transfer flow near a stagnation point towards a stretching sheet in a porous medium with thermal radiation

The effect of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity on steady magnetohydrodynamic（MHD） heat and mass transfer flow of viscous and incompressible fluid near a stagnation point towards a permeable stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium are presented,taking into account thermal radiation and internal heat genberation/*** stretching velocity and the ambient fluid velocity are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation *** Rosseland approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy *** governing fundamental equations are first transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using a scaling group of transformations and are solved numerically by using the fourth-order Rung-Kutta method with the shooting technique.A comparison with previously published work has been carried out and the results are found to be in good *** results are analyzed for the effect of different physical parameters,such as the variable viscosity and thermal conductivity,the ratio of free stream velocity to stretching velocity,the magnetic field,the porosity,the radiation and suction/injection on the flow,and the heat and mass transfer *** results indicate that the inclusion of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity into the fluids of light and medium molecular weight is able to change the boundary-layer behavior for all values of the velocity ratio parameter λ except for λ = *** addition,the imposition of fluid suction increases both the rate of heat and mass transfer,whereas fluid injection shows the opposite effect.
