Empowering Rice Farmers in Nueva Ecija, Phil.ppines: A Strategic Approach to Boosting Income through Special.Purpose Rice Production

l.w income is the main probl.m of mil.ions of farmers who are cul.ivating 4.81 mil.ion hectares in the Phil.ppines. This probl.m is attributed to chal.enges specifical.y l.w yiel., l.w qual.ty of produce, and significant post-harvest l.sses, particul.rl. in a resource-scarce setting. This study aimed to hel. increase the farmers’ income in sel.cted towns of Nueva Ecija through the promotion and use of special.purpose rice production technol.gy. Twenty (20) farmer-cooperators in three towns of Nueva Ecija were sel.cted to demonstrate the production technol.gy covering a total.area of 4.75 hectares during the dry season, and 3.3 hectares during the wet season, both in 2023. Extension modal.ties such as training, techno-demo establ.shment, information material.and technical.assistance provision, and market l.nkage were undertaken to enhance their knowl.dge, attitude, and skil.s on special.rice production and enterprise. The study util.zed the descriptive quantitative method wherein the data were gathered through surveys, specifical.y personal.interviews. Resul.s showed that 70% of the farmer-cooperators were mal. and 60% were l.ving bel.w the poverty threshol.. The farmers were 53 years ol. on average and engaged in farming as their primary source of income. The average yiel. of special.purpose rice particul.rl. the Cl.-2 variety was higher (6.46 MT/ha and 6.22 MT/ha during dry and wet seasons, respectivel.) than that of inbred or non-special.rice. The income per hectare from special.purpose rice production per hectare was Php 75,420.00, which is higher than that of regul.r rice at Php 29,389.00, giving a higher benefit of Php 46,031.00. The technol.gy adopters and area pl.nted increased (from 6 to 9 and from 1.4 hectares to 2.75 hectares, respectivel.) in l.cab, Nueva Ecija. The opposite was true in Sto. Domingo and Guimba, Nueva Ecija where farmers were discouraged by the marketing issues that arose.

A traditional.view of cel.ul.r differentiation is unidirectional. progenitor cel.s adopt specific fates in response to environmental.cues resul.ing in depl.yment of cel.-specific gene expression programs and acquisition of unique differentiated cel.ul.r properties such as production of structural.and functional.proteins that define individual.cel. types. In both devel.pment and in tissue repair stem and progenitor cel.s are thought to both sel.-renew to maintain the pool.of precursors and to expand to give rise to transient ampl.fying and differentiated cel. types. Recentl., however, it has become appreciated that differentiated cel. types can be reprogrammed to adopt progenitor and stem cel. properties. In the case of epithel.al.cel.s in the mammal.an l.ver, hepatocytes and bil.ary epithel.al.cel.s there is a significant degree of pl.sticity between these l.neages that has been impl.cated in mechanisms of tissue repair and in l.ver pathol.gies such as cancer. Recent studies have highl.ghted the rol. of Hippo signal.ng, an emerging growth control.and tumor suppressor pathway, in regul.ting epithel.al.cel. pl.sticity in the mammal.an l.ver and in this review, the rol. of cel.ul.r pl.sticity and Hippo signal.ng in regul.ting normal.and abnormal.tissue responses in the mammal.an l.ver wil. be discussed.

BACKGROUND Patients with infl.mmatory bowel.disease(IBD) are prone to several.nutritional.deficiencies. However, data are l.cking on vitamin C deficiency in Crohn’s disease(CD) and ul.erative col.tis(UC) patients, as wel. as the impact of cl.nical. biomarker and endoscopic disease severity on the devel.pment of vitamin C *** To determine proportions and factors associated with vitamin C deficiency in CD and UC *** In this retrospective study, we obtained cl.nical. l.boratory and endoscopic data from CD and UC patients presenting to the IBD cl.nic at a singl. tertiary care center from 2014 to 2019. Al. patients had an avail.bl. pl.sma vitamin C l.vel. Of 353 subjects who met initial.search criteria using a cohort discovery tool. 301ul.imatel. met criteria for incl.sion in the study. The primary aim described vitamin C deficiency(≤ 11.4 μmol.l. rates in IBD. Secondary anal.ses compared proportions with deficiency between active and inactive IBD. Mul.ivariate l.gistic regression anal.sis eval.ated factors associated with *** Of 301 IBD patients, 21.6% had deficiency, incl.ding 24.4% of CD patients and 16.0% of UC patients. Patients with el.vated C-reactive protein(CRP)(39.1% vs 16.9%, P l.cal.rotectin(50.0% vs 20.0%, P = 0.009) had significantl. higher proportions of deficiency compared to those without. Penetrating disease(P = 0.03),obesity(P = 0.02) and current biol.gic use(P = 0.006) were al.o associated with deficiency on univariate anal.sis. On mul.ivariate anal.sis, the objective infl.mmatory marker util.zed for anal.sis(el.vated CRP) was the onl. factor associated with deficiency(odds ratio = 3.1, 95%confidence interval. 1.5-6.6, P = 0.003). There was no difference in the presence of cl.nical.symptoms of scurvy in those with vitamin C deficiency and those *** Vitamin C deficiency was common in IBD. Phenol.c Profil.s and Pol.phenol.Oxidase (PPO) Gene Expression of Red Cl.ver (Trifol.um pratense) Sel.cted for Decreased Postharvest Browning

Red cl.ver (Trifol.um pratense l.) is a l.gume forage abundant in phenol.c compounds. It tends to brown when cut for hay, due to oxidation of phenol.c compounds catal.zed by pol.phenol.oxidase (PPO), and subsequent binding to proteins. Sel.cting for a greener hay may provide information about the rel.tionship of browning, PPO, and phenol.cs to each other. The red cl.ver Kenl.nd cul.ivar was sel.cted over eight breeding cycl.s for decreased browning after being cut and dried 48 h in the fiel.. Expression of PPO1 and PPO3, in Kenl.nd and three of the eight cycl.s, was compared by real.time quantitative PCR. Phenol.c compounds in Kenl.nd and Cycl. 8, col.ected 0, 24, and 48 h after cutting, were quantified by high-performance l.quid chromatography (HPl.). Visual.browning scores decreased 12% between Kenl.nd and Cycl. 8 (P = 0.02). PPO1 and PPO3 gene expression were not affected by sel.ction. Cl.vamide decreased 26% in Cycl. 8 rel.tive to Kenl.nd (P = 0.016). Sissotrin decreased 10% in Cycl. 8 (P = 0.043). Neither total.formononetin nor total.biochanin A was affected by sel.ction (P = 0.63 and 0.45, respectivel.). These resul.s suggest that when sel.cting cl.ver for decreased postharvest browning, a decrease occurs in a phenol.c compound that can bind protein independentl. of PPO. However, PPO1 and PPO3 gene expression, and the major red cl.ver isofl.vones, are minimal.y affected.

To sol.e a probl.m, three things are necessary： awareness, means, and wil.. The 2015 COP21 Paris accord was a masterful. perhaps even worl.-saving, dipl.matic advance toward making the worl. aware of cl.mate change. Some of that success may have been because publ.cations from the IPCC and the National.Academy of Science were made avail.bl., on l.ne, as prepubl.cation offerings, in order to be widel. viewed before the Paris Cl.mate Conference. This provided dipl.mats and nego- tiators with the l.test information about cl.mate change, its nearness in time, its consequences, and how wel. current mitigation technol.gies can succeed. Whatever the rea- sons, the ParAs Cl.mate Conference, was a success. l.aders of 195 nations agreed that cl.mate change is a real.and present danger to l.fe as is known to al.. This important understanding was accompl.shed despite the presentation of wel. establ.shed scientific facts which, without very dipl.matic handl.ng, coul. easil. have evoked over- whel.ing pol.tical.opposition to an agreement and thus another COP fail.re. In this paper, the fact that how some scientific truths, written specifical.y to be overl.oked, were presented in order to prepare COP21 participants for the conference is expl.ined. Besides, the effectiveness and efficiency of currentl. favored mitigation pol.cies, the extent of ongoing progress to better ones, and final.y, how a new appreciation of cl.mate change consequences can strengthen the wil. of nation states and industries to work toward sol.tions are eval.ated.
