The objective of this study was to assess runoff discharge and sediment yield from Da River Basin in the Northwest of Vietnam using Soil and Water Assessment Tools(SWAT) *** SWAT model was calibrated and validated using the observed monthly stream flows and sediment yield at selected gauging *** results indicated that SWAT generally performs well in simulating runoff and sediment yield according to Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE), Observation's standard deviation ratio(RSR), and percent bias(pBIAS) *** runoff, the values of NSE, RSR, and pBIAS were 0.98,0.02, and 3.69 during calibration period and 0.99,0.01, and 1.56 during validation period, *** sediment yield, the efficiency was lower than the value of NSE, RSR, and pBIAS during calibration period were 0.81, 0.19, and-4.14 and 0.84, 0.16, and-2.56 during validation period, *** results of the study indicated that the vegetation status has a significant impact on runoff and sediment *** in land use type between 1995 and2005 from forest to field crop and urban strongly contributed to increasing the average annual runoff from 182.5 to 342.7 mm and sediment yield from101.3 to 148.1 ton-1 *** 2005 and 2010, adecrease of both runoff(from 342.7 to 167.6 mm) and sediment yield(from 148.1 to 74.0 ton-1 ha) was due to the expansion of forested area and application of soil conservation *** results of this study are important for developing soil and water conservation programs, extending future SWAT modelling studies and disseminating these results to other regions in Vietnam.

Land use in the northeast region of Thailand has changed dramatically in the past two decades. These changes are mainly due to the government policies, which launched a scheme to promote rubber plantation during 2003–2013 targeting to solve the problem of poverty in the region. At least 50,000 ha of paddy fields were found to be converted to other land use types between 2002 and 2012. This study was conducted in Nong Khai and Bueng Kan province of northeast Thailand, where massive rubber plantation is going on prompting significant amount of land-use change, with the objective of investigating how land-use changes will affect on food availability in future. We analyzed land-use changes of the past and simulated future land uses using GIS and Landsat Thematic Mapper Data. The most obvious change was the decrease in paddy field and an increase in rubber plantation. This eventually leads to decreased paddy production affecting food supply of farm households. The land use projections for 2032 were done for three scenarios using Dyna-CLUE model. Unlike business as usual scenario, which will further decrease the paddy area, other scenarios with different land use policies if implemented will help protect paddy areas and thus achieving higher food production locally. The lack of implementation of proper spatial policies will lead to a further loss of paddy areas at macro *** smallholder farmers may be highly vulnerable to land use-change and experience significant food crop losses, food insecurity and income loss when they change the land to rubber and there is market failure.

Changes in glacial lakes and the consequences of these changes, particularly on the development of water resources and management of glacial lake outburst flood(GLOF) risk, has become one of the challenges in the sustainable development of high mountain areas in the context of global warming. This paper presents the findings of a study on the distribution of, and area changes in, glacial lakes in the Koshi basin in the central *** on the number of glacial lakes and their area was generated for the years 1977, 1990, 2000, and 2010 using Landsat satellite images. According to the glacial lake inventory in 2010, there were a total of 2168 glacial lakes with a total area of 127.61 km^2 and average size of 0.06 km^2 in the Koshi basin. Of these,47% were moraine dammed lakes, 34.8% bedrock dammed lakes and 17.7% ice dammed lakes. The number of glacial lakes increased consistently over the study period from 1160 in 1977 to 2168 in 2010, an overall growth rate of 86.9%. The area of glacial lakes also increased from 94.44 km^2 in 1977 to 127.61 km^2 in 2010, a growth rate of 35.1%. A large number of glacial lakes in the inventory are small in size(≤ 0.1km^2). End moraine dammed lakes with area greater than 0.1 km^2 were selected to analyze the change characteristics of glacial lakes in the basin. The results show that, in 2010, there were 129 lakes greater than 0.1 km^2 in area; these lakes had a total area of 42.92km^2 in 1997, increasing to 63.28 km^2 in 2010. The distribution of lakes on the north side of the Himalayas(in China) was three times higher than on the south side of the Himalayas(in Nepal).Comparing the mean growth rate in area for the 33 year study period(1977-2010), the growth rate on the north side was found to be a little slower than that on the south side. Broad leaf mustard(BLM)(Brassica juncea ***,Brassicaceae)is one of the most widely consumed vegetable crops in *** production of crop in open field is constrained by major pests like mustard aphid and flea *** study was aimed to determine the effects of pest exclusion net(pEN)on pest-infestation and yield of BLM cultivar“Khumal Broad Leaf”.The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design(RCBD)with five treatments and four *** treatments included control(no mulch+no net+no pesticide spray),black plastic mulch only,reflective plastic mulch only,black plastic mulch+no net+pesticide spray,and pEN+black plastic mulch+no pesticide *** were analyzed with RSTAT software package and means were separated by Duncan’s multiple range test(DMRT)at 5%level of *** result revealed that crop under pEN had highest plant height(38.99 cm),lowest number of aphid(0-0.86 per plant),flea beetle(0-1.07 per plant)and highest total marketable yield(77.50 ton/ha)while control had lowest plant height(20.06 cm),highest number of aphid(maximum 2.49 per plant),flea beetle(maximum 2.00 per plant)and lowest total marketable yield(13.75 ton/ha).Economic analysis revealed highest benefit-cost ratio in pEN(9.90).This study indicates that the use of pEN protect BLM against aphid and flea beetle,increases yield and can be considered as a viable technology for BLM production by smallholder growers of Nepal.
