Present study is carried out in the bone samples collected from Roopkund Lake in district Chamoli garhwal, Uttarakhand which is located at 5,029 meters from main sea level in between Nanda Ghunghti and Trishuli peak. This historical site belongs to 9th century A.D. All the samples selected for the study were dried in room temperature as well as hot air oven at 32 ~C. Cleaning, pretreatment and digestion process of faunal remains was followed through established scientific methods. Chemical analysis i.e. concentration of different elements such as calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and zinc as well as isotopic ratios of Carbon and Nitrogen was estimated with the help of ICP （inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy） and AAS （atomic absorption spectrophotometer）. The results obtained from the chemical analysis are significant. On the basis of concentration of different elements and ratios of Nitrogen and Carbon isotopes, the dietary habits of the peoples buried in the Roopkund Lake are identified, which is different from sample to sample person to person. Besides this, the results are also significantly helpful for knowing the preservation status of faunal remains in Roopkund Lake. Finally this study also indicated the potentiality of chemical analysis for reconstructing the palaeodiet behaviour and preservation status of bone remains.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to assess the utility of ocular ultrasound B scan in the emergency at the fi rst point of care for detecting posterior segment and orbital pathologies in cases of paediatric ocular ***: A prospective observational study involving 122 paediatric patients presenting to eye emergency over a period of ninety days were assessed with ultrasonography for the posterior segment as well as orbital pathology whenever indicated. The ocular ultrasound was performed gently over closed ***: Posttraumatic globe injuries were the most common indication for posterior segment evaluation, which constituted 80(65.57%) eyes. Among these 52 patients had an anechoic posterior segment and 28 patients had variable findings such as vitreous haemorrhage(8.19%), retinal detachment(6.55%), choroidal detachment(4.91%), posteriorly dislocated clear lens(0.81%) and retained intraocular foreign body(5.73%). Non-traumatic cases constituted around 42(34.42%) eyes, which included corneal ulcer(7.37%), retinoblastoma(6.55%), endophthalmitis(4.91%), extraocular muscle cysticercosis(4.91%), orbital cellulitis(4.09%), periocular haemorrhage(2.45%), proptosis(1.63%), paediatric cataract(1.63%) and cryptophthalmos(0.81%). No adverse events of performing the ultrasound was ***: First point ultrasonography in paediatric ocular emergencies is a cheap, portable and an effective tool in the assertion of signifi cant posterior segment and orbital diseases.

The aqueous and alcoholic extract of Urena lobata flowers has been used in acid/alkali titrations over a wide range of concentration. The results obtained with the flower extracts have been compared with those obtained by using traditional chemical indicators like phenolphthalein and methyl orange. It has been established experimentally that the flower extract can be successfully used in place of phenolphthalein and methyl orange for acid/alkali titrations. The presence of anthocyanins is supposed to impart pH sensitive colour dependence to the natural indicator.

A series of sulpha/substituted derivatives of phenyl azo-1,2-diazole have been synthesized and tested as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity in mature albino rats hind paw by taking Diclofenac sodium as standard. N1-(4-hydroxy benzoyl)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-4(N-4-chlorophenylazo)-1,2-diazole is synthesized by a two-step process. In the first step, synthesis of N1-4-chlorophenyl hydrazono-1-methyl-3-phenyl propane-1,3-dione by the reciprocal action of 1-methyl-5-phenylpropane-1,3-dione and diazonium salt solution of phenyl-chloride interacts with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide to form the final compound. These diazoles, the heterocyclic compounds which contained electron withdrawing groups, were screened for analgesic activity by acetic acid induced writing method, and for anti-inflammatory activity carried on carrageenan-induced paw edema. The synthesized substituted Chlorophenylazo-1,2-diazole nucleus exhibited significant anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory activity, muscle relaxing and moderate activity in anti-proliferative studies.

Development of Non-Labeled QCM Biosensor for the Detection of <i>β</i>-Galactosidase: A Comparative Study of Gold and Polystyrene Nanoparticles

The performance of gold and polystyrene nanoparticles was investigated using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) as sensor platform;β-Galactosidase antibody with corresponding antigen was utilized for the immunoreaction. The development of the immunosensor included: 1) formation of self assembled monolayers on quartz crystals;2a) immobilization of p-aminothiophenol functionalized gold nanoparticles on carboxyl-terminated self assembled monolayer, or 2b) immobilization of polystyrene nanoparticles on crystals modified with p-aminothiophenol self assembled monolayer;3) attachment of monoclonal anti β-Gal on nanoparticles;and 4) detection of target analyte. The nanoparticles used were synthesized in house and characterized by transmission electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed that antibodies were strongly attached to functionalized gold nanoparticles;the weaker immobilization of antibodies to polystyrene nanoparticles provoked their detachment during antigen detection. When cross reactivity of polystyrene nanoparticles was checked using a different antigen (Brucella), displacement of antibody was not recorded, demonstrating specificity of the reaction. To the best of our knowledge this is the first direct comparison between behaviors of biosensors developed with two commonly used nanoparticles. The results showed that both nanoparticles produced biosensors capable to detect β-Gal. Nevertheless biosensors developed using polystyrene nanoparticles are simpler, cheaper and more eco-friendly than those developed using gold nanoparticles.

Aconitum balfourii （Bruhl） Muk. （Ranunculaceae） is an en- dangered medicinal plant. Natural populations were surveyed in the northwest Himalaya for population estimation and evaluation of elite germplasm. Vegetation sampling of quadrats was conducted using the vertical belt transect method in areas supporting A. balfourii. Plant den- sity and relative dominance ofA. balfourii were low compared with other alpine species. Threat status was determined on a site-by-site basis as well as for entire western Himalaya..4. balfourii was generally classified as endangered on the basis of geographic distribution and critically en- dangered on the basis of abundance. We found the natural geographic distribution of.4. balfourii to be diminishing due to habitat destruction. Immediate corrective management measures are needed for sustainable utilization and long-term conservation of the species in the wild.
