Microbial Adhesion on Orthodontic Ligating Materials: An <i>in Vitro</i>Assessment

Orthodontic fixed appliance therapy is the commonest mode of treatment for most types of malocclusions (teeth irregularities). However, these materials are liable for microbial adhesion, which predisposes the wearer to increased microbial burden. The present study aims to evaluate, microbial adhesion and growth on commonly used orthodontic ligating materials (Teflon coated wire, stainless steel wire, elastic rings) under in vitro condition. Furthermore, the role of saliva on adhesion and microbial colonization on said materials was also assessed. Experiments were conducted with three different orthodontic ligating materials each in 6 numbers. Growth OD, metabolic activity and cell viability were the experimental variables in addition to SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis performed. Results revealed irespective of the nature of the ligating materials, microbial adhesion and growth were observed in all the materials and suggested that the chosen materials promotes microbial adhesion. Nevertheless, stainless steel ligatures were less prone to adhesion compared to Teflon coated and elastic ligatures. Presence of saliva accelerates adhesion and growth.

Palladium-catalyzed carboxylative Suzuki coupling reactions of benzyl chlorides with allyl pinacol-borate were successfully conducted in the absence of any extra ligand to produce β,γ-unsaturated esters in satisfactory to good yields. The carboxylative Suzuki coupling reaction proceeded smooth-ly under mild conditions in the presence of palladium nanoparticles generated in situ through the formation of a π-benzylpalladium chloride intermediate.

Purpose: To determine the effect of curcumin (as Meriva) on absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), T cell populations and NK cells in patients with Rai stage 0/1 chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) over a period of six months. Experimental Design: Twenty-one patients with significant lymphocytosis (>20 × 109 lymphocytes/L) and stage 0/1 CLL were recruited into the study and received oral curcumin 2 grams/day. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at 2 monthly intervals for six months for full blood count, leukocyte surface antigens, liver function, serum biochemistry, immunoglobulins, CRP and ESR. A positive biologic response was defined as a reduction in the ALC of more than 20% from pre-treatment levels. Results: Four patients (20%) demonstrated more than 20% decrease in ALC, three of whom had lower ALC at the end of the study as compared to baseline. The decrease in ALC was accompanied by an increase in CD4, CD8 and NK cells. No demonstrable response was seen in seventeen patients (80%) who exhibited stable, fluctuating or increasing ALC during the study. Conclusion: A subgroup of stage 0/1 CLL patients may be responsive to curcumin therapy. The beneficial response appears to be immunomodulated.

The electromagnetic torque and speed in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) greatly depend on the excitation parametersi.e. turn-on angle, turn-off angle, dwell angle and magnitude of the phase currents of its phases. At lower speeds, a change in the current contributes the torque requirement which can be achieved either by voltage control (pulse width modulation) or instantaneous current control techniques. At high speeds, due to high back EMF, the regulation of current is crucial and achieved with the control of switching angles of phases. This type of control is referred as average torque control, where the torque is averaged over one stroke (2π/Nr). With constant dwell angle, advancing the phase angle influences the current into the phase winding at minimum inductance position. It has more time to get the current out of the phase winding before the rotor reaches the negative inductance slope. To maintain the speed of the motor at different load conditions, the turn-on and turn-off angles are adaptively varied. The change in dwell angle may be required where the turn-on and turn-off angle may not be sufficient to reach the required speed. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for self tuning of switching parameters of SRM. The proposed algorithm is simulated in MATLAB-Simulink and experimentally validated with Field Programmable Gated Array (FPGA) using MATLAB- system generator environment.

Lipoma is a benign neoplasm of the soft tissue that originates in mature adipocytes. Even though it is a very common tumor, it is relatively uncommon in oral cavity. It represents about 1% to 4% of all benign tumors in oral cavity (12). This article describes a case of a 39 years old male with an intraoral pedunculated mass in the right side of hard palate which was histopathologically proved as a simple lipoma.

The use of traditional breeding for improvement of avocado cultivars is time consuming, hence other methods such as genetic transformation by Agrobacterium is indispensable to adopt. The strain GV3850/pBI121gave best transformation outcome compared to five other binary vectors (AGL1/pCGP904;AGL1/pBI121;GV3850/pCGP904;LBA4404/pCG-P904 and LBA4404/pBI121) under different pH and acetosyringone concentrations. The optimal condition for reliable transformation was by using 200 μM acetosyringone and a pH of 5.2. Transformed embryonic shoots co-cultivated with GV3850/pBI121 were tested using the histochemical x-gluc assay. Further analysis was conducted by polymerase chain reaction using specific primers for the reporter gene (GUS).

As per the entail in wireless communication, the ever increasing switching speeds of digital devices pose significant challenges. Signal quality is more important for high speed products and the signal integrity must ensure reliable transmission where signal integrity is a measure of the quality of an electrical signal. A high speed differential signal will result in signal integrity issues such as crosstalk and radiated emission. One of the solutions to suppress radiated emission is defected ground pattern. This paper introduces a novel trident incurvature shaped defected ground structure to suppress radiated emission that arises in high speed differential signal. The proposed defected ground structure is implemented using Ansoft HFSS simulation tool and its performance is quantified in terms of scattering parameters. The proposed trident incurvature shaped defected ground pattern reduces near end coupling and far end coupling by more than 6 dB and 2 dB respectively. It also provides better return loss and insertion loss in the frequency range 1 - 6 GHz.

This paper proposes an efficient method for optimal power flow solution （OPF） using particle swarm optimization （PSO） technique. The objective of the proposed method is to find the steady state operation point in a power system which minimizes the fuel cost, while maintaining an acceptable system performance in terms of limits on generator power, line flow limits and voltage limits. In order to improvise the performance of the conventional PSO （cPSO）, the fine tuning parameters- the inertia weight and acceleration coefficients are formulated in terms of global-local best values of the objective function. These global-local best inertia weight （GLBestlW） and global-local best acceleration coefficient （GLBestAC） are incorporated into PSO in order to compute the optimal power flow solution. The proposed method has been tested on the standard IEEE 30 bus test system to prove its efficacy. The results are compared with those obtained through cPSO. It is observed that the proposed algorithm is computationally faster, in terms of the number of load flows executed and provides better results than the conventional heuristic techniques.
