BACKGROUND Pancreatic panniculitis is an extremely rare condition associated with different underlying pancreatic disorders and characterized by subcutaneous fat necrosis induced by elevated serum lipase *** lesions usually affect the lower extremities and may precede abdominal symptoms of pancreatic *** cell carcinoma(ACC)of the pancreas is a rare pancreatic neoplasm,accounting for only 1%-2%of pancreatic tumors in *** present the case of a 72-year-old man with ACC of the pancreatic head and synchronous liver *** the primary tumor and liver metastases were *** lipase was elevated before surgery and decreased to normal *** serum lipase levels at follow-up led to the diagnosis of hepatic *** disease progression was then accompanied by pancreatic panniculitis,with subcutaneous fat necrosis and acute *** the best of our knowledge,only 4 cases have been reported in the literature and each showed a similar association of serum lipase levels with pancreatic panniculitis and progression of *** Clinical symptoms and progression of ACC may correlate with serum lipase levels,suggesting potential usefulness as a follow-up biomarker.

Mesophyll-Driven Blade Expansion in <i>Pisum sativum</i>var. <i>argenteum</i>Leaves

The growth rate of any multilayered plant organ is limited by the cell layer with the least extensibility. The dicot leaf blade has two epidermal layers covering the mesophyll layers, in which the vascular network is embedded. There has been a lingering uncertainty about which layer limits the rate of blade expansion in dicot leaves. The current study made use of leaf strips cut from the argenteum variety of Pisum sativum L., in which the epidermal layers can easily be removed with minimal damage. After this procedure, the mesophyll showed accelerated growth in short-term and long-term experiments and light and darkness. Extension of both layers is strongly promoted by acidic solutions. Isolated mesophyll layers expand in response to light. This effect depends on turgor pressure, photosynthesis, and the plasma membrane H+-ATPase. The data allow concluding that expanding leaf blades share with axial stem organs a similar arrangement of tissue tension: an expanding core tissue pushing against a restrictive epidermal envelope. In complete leaves, partial removal of the epidermis from only one side of the blade causes a strong epinastic or hyponastic response. Removal of matching epidermis strips from both sides of complete blades causes the exposed mesophyll strip to elongate in excess of the neighboring tissue: it buckles.

The Effect of Simulated Transportation Conditions on the Chemical, Physical and Sensory Profiles of Mailler-Thurgau and Scheurebe Wines

The impact of different phases of shipment （at sea and at port） on two German white wines of two vintages and the lasting effects of the temperature regimes over time was investigated. The wines were subjected to three temperature programs--control （15 ℃）, linear increase （15℃ steadily increasing to 45 ℃）, and diurnal fluctuation （15 ℃/40 ℃）--in both movement and non-movement conditions. The wines were analyzed for chemical, physical and sensorial changes at one and eight months post-treatment. Changes in temperature and pressure were recorded within the bottles, which correlated with the temperature programs：＋0.04 bar/℃ in the linear increase program and ＋0.08 bar/℃ in the diurnal fluctuation program. The oxygen levels in the headspace and in the wine were monitored during all of the treatments. The oxygen development in the bottles was similar between the diurnal and linear programs, and was found to be distinctive from the control program. The chemical analysis revealed that there were significant differences related to the experimental treatments of the wines for the following parameters： tartaric acid, free sulfur dioxide, total sulfur dioxide and percent cork weight loss measurements. Difference sensory testing found very few differences. After eight months storage, significant differences were found in the Diurnal Non-movement treatment compared to Linear Non-movement and control treatments, as well as Diurnal Movement and Control treatments for the 2014 Miiller-Thurgau wine. Sensory descriptive analysis of the wines found that the wines could be differentiated by variety, but could not be distinguished according to experimental treatment after one month storage. These results indicate that wines of these types are more robust to shipping conditions than previously found.

Development of Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed Dielectric Ceramic Coatings for High Efficiency Tubular Ozone Generators

Oxidative degradation of hazardous materials by ozone treatment like in sterilization of water, dump waste, pulp bleach and chemical processing, is superior to the traditional chlorine chemistry with respect to by-products and environmental protection. For an efficient and cost effective production of ozone for applications in drinking water and wastewater purification, a new concept of tubular composite material components has been developed. A borosilicate glass tube was coated with a layer system consisting of an intermetallic electrode and a dielectric oxide ceramic surface layer. Thermo-mechanical and dielectric properties are investigated with respect to the use of different thermal spray powders as well as the use of a high and a low energetic atmospheric spray gun. The materials and ozone production system of thermal sprayed ozonizer tubes are described and analyzed.

Existing Building Challenge and CONCERTO Project

If Europe is to achieve the planned transition to a low carbon economy by 2050, succeeding in improving the energy efficiency of the largely inefficient existing building stock will be pivotal. Certain energy efficiency retrofitting obligations have now emerged as part of the EU＇s Energy Performance in Buildings Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive. Challenges for retrofitting currently include gaps in technical skills both amongst building trades and professionals, a lack of awareness of building owners and users, concerns about compromising cultural heritage as well as a lack of viable business models, comparatively high cost and resulting long pay-back periods currently hamper the progress. Lessons can be drawn here form the EU-funded initiative CONCERTO, which helped 58 communities in 23 countries to reduce their dependence on conventional energy supply by implementing energy efficiency measures and integrating renewable energy sources not at single building scale but community scale. Almost all of these entailed retrofitting activities bad to find solutions to the issues mentioned. This paper presents a selection of conclusions regarding retrofitting to be drawn from the analysis undertaken under the project CONCERTO premium, which analysed outcomes across the 58 projects on behalf of the European Commission and focuses in particular on the political relevance of outcomes.

Geomorphic Processes, Rock Quality and Solid Waste Management—Examples from the Mt. Everest Region of Nepal

Sagarmatha National Park and Buffer Zone (SNPBZ) in the Everest region in Nepal is among the most popular destinations for trekking tourism in Nepal. The dramatic growth of the tourism industry has increased pressures on the environment and the National Park is heavily affected by the rapidly growing waste issue. Besides, major mass movements play an important role in the Himalaya and have been observed in SNPBZ. Also, seasonal monsoon floods, debris flows, rock falls, landslides and the creation of glacial lake outburst floods are frequently occurring in the region. This paper explores the reciprocal interactions between the geo-environment and solid waste management in Everest’s SNPBZ. Therefore, geological characteristics and geomorphological processes, especially the two large rockslides in Lukla and Khumjung, as well as their consequences for rock quality, climatic and hydrologic conditions, are analyzed and simultaneously connected to the rapidly growing tourism-induced waste issue. Rockslide material shows high porosity and permeability. Thus, we argue that rockslide facies are particularly vulnerable to contamination by waste water and washed out agricultural fertilizers, which pose threats to the population especially in Namche Bazaar but probably also in Lukla. Also, the landfill sites are often affected by geomorphological processes and may consequently contaminate surface and ground water. Results highlight that regional infrastructure planning of landfill sites often collides with the natural features of the geo-environment and often causes harm to human health and the environment. The implications of the results can be applied to similar areas (such as Marsyandi Valley, Kali Gandaki Valley) with special geological characteristics and rapidly growing waste issues.

New insights in understanding dental caries and periodontal disease: the avalanche model

Biology is based on evolution;therefore, eu-kariotes like plants, animals and human beings are living in harmony with their procariote an-cestors. If this is obviously the normal way of life, then pathobiology follows the same basic principles. The highly complex harmony of the living world may be disrupted, and a punctuated disease starts which is different from the health equilibrium. To reflect this biological archetype on the main diseases in dentistry - caries and periodontitis - the avalanche model is being proposed based on scientific and clinical evi-dence. This way of argumentation does influ-ence the strategic planning of preventive and curative programmes in dental research as well as in daily practise.

Background:Cells of the retinal pigment epithelium(RPE)accumulate different kinds of granules(lipofuscin,melanolipofuscin,melanosomes)within their cell bodies,with lipofuscin and melanolipofuscin being autofluorescent after blue light *** amounts of lipofuscin granules within the RPE have been associated with the development of RPE cell death and age-related macular degeneration(AMD);however,this has not been confirmed in histology so ***,based on our previous dataset of RPE granule characteristics,we report the characteristics of RPE cells from human donor eyes that show either high or low numbers of intracellular granules or high or low autofluorescence(AF)***:RPE flatmounts of fifteen human donors were examined using high-resolution structured illumination microscopy(HR-SIM)and laser scanning microscopy(LSM).Autofluorescent granules were analyzed regarding AF phenotype and absolute number of *** addition,total AF intensity per cell and granule density(number of granules per cell area)were *** the final analysis,RPE cells with total granule number below 5th or above the 95th percentile,or a total AF intensity±1.5 standard deviations above or below the mean were included,and compared to the average RPE cell at the same *** are presented as mean±standard ***:Within 420 RPE cells examined,42 cells were further analyzed due to extremes regarding total granule *** addition,20 RPE cells had AF 1.5 standard deviations below,28 RPE cells above the mean local AF *** granules predominate in RPE cells with low granule content and low AF *** cells with high granule content have nearly twice(1.8 times)as many granules as an average RPE ***:In normal eyes,outliers regarding autofluorescent granule load and AF intensity signals are rare among RPE cells,suggesting that granule deposition and subsequent AF follows intrinsic control mechanisms at a cellul
