Clones identification of Sequoia sem.ervirens (D. Don) Endl. in Chile by using PCR-RAPDs technique

A protocol of polym.rase chain reaction-random.am.lified polym.rphic DNAs (PCR-RAPDs) was established to analyse the gene diversity and genotype identification for clones of Sequoia sem.ervirens (D. Don) Endl. in Chile. Ten (out of 34) clones from.introduction trial located in Voipir-Villarrica, Chile, were studied. The PCR-RAPDs technique and a m.dified hexadecyltrim.thylam.onium.brom.de (CTAB) protocol were used for genom.c DNA extraction. The PCR tests were carried out em.loying 10-m.r random.prim.rs. The am.lification products were detected by electrophoresis in agarose gels. Forty nine polym.rphic bands were obtained with the selected prim.rs (BG04, BF07, BF12, BF13, and BF14) and were ordered according to their m.lecular size. The genetic sim.larity between sam.les was calculated by the Jaccard index and a dendrogram.was con- structed using a cluster analysis of unweighted pair group m.thod using arithm.tic averages (UPGm.). Of the prim.rs tested, 5 (out of 60) RAPD prim.rs were selected for their reproducibility and high polym.rphism. A total of 49 polym.rphic RAPD bands were detected out of 252 bands. The genetic sim.larity analysis dem.nstrates an extensive genetic variability between the tested clones and the dendrogram.depicts the genetic relationships am.ng the clones, suggesting a geographic relationship. The results indicate that the RAPD m.rkers perm.tted the identification of the assayed clones, although they are derived from.the sam. geo- graphic origin.

Changes in land cover have a direct im.act on forest ecosystem.goods and services. In this study, changes in land cover in Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca ecosystem. were estim.ted using a consistent processing of Landsat im.ges and OBIA m.thodology. Additionally, landscape analyses using FRAGSTAT were conducted. In 2014, Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca was covered by approxim.tely 84% of forests, m.inly pine-oak and cloud forests. After extensive deforestation until 2001, this trend was reversed and the forest cover surface area in 2014 was slightly higher than in 1979. The com.arison of the landscape structure of the forested and agricultural lands suggests an increase in habitat heterogeneity. However, interspersion and juxtaposition indices, showing the patch shape by patch area and perim.ter, were sim.lar throughout the study period(1979–2014). Social and econom.c drivers can explain this situation: nam.ly, com.unity organization, forest enterprises, paym.nt for ecosystem.services program., and changes of agricultural activity. Com.unities in the Sierra of Oaxaca have reforested degraded lands, created com.unity forest enterprises, and preserved the forest under conservation schem.s like those proposed by the m.xican paym.nt for ecosystem.services program.. However, their sustainable m.nagem.nt faces internal challenges and has becom. highly dependent on political and institutional decisions beyond their control.

Background:Fragm.ntation and deforestation are one of the greatest threats to forests,and these processes are of even m.re concern in the tropics,where the seasonal dry forest is possibly one of the m.st threatened ecosystem. with the least rem.ining surface ***:The deforestation and fragm.ntation patterns that had occurred in Ecuadorian seasonal dry forests between 1990 and 2018 were verified,while geographic inform.tion system. and land cover shapes provided by the Ecuadorian m.nistry of the Environm.nt were em.loyed to classify and evaluate three types of seasonal dry forests:deciduous,sem.-deciduous,and *** study area was tessellated into 10 km. hexagons,in which six fragm.ntation param.ters were m.asured:num.er of patches,m.an patch size,m.dian patch size,total edge,edge density and reticular fragm.ntation index(RFI).The RFI was also m.asured both outside and inside protected natural areas(unprotected,national protected areas and protected forest).m.reover,the areas with the best and worst conservation status,connectivity and risk of disappearance values were identified by m.ans of a Getis-Ord Gi*statistical ***:The deforestation of seasonal dry forests affected 27.04%of the original surface area still rem.ining in 1990,with an annual deforestation rate of−1.12%between 1990 and *** RFI has increased by 11.61%as a result of the fact that sm.ll fragm.nts of forest have tended to disappear,while the large fragm.nts have been fragm.nted into sm.ller *** sem.-deciduous forest had the highest levels of fragm.ntation in *** three categories of protection had significantly different levels of fragm.ntation,with lower RFI values in national protected areas and greater values in protected ***:The seasonal dry forest is fragm.nting,deforesting and disappearing in som. *** increased protection and conservation of the Ecuadorian seasonal dry forest is,therefore,necessary owing to the fact that not all prot

Spatial pattern of landscape changes and consequence changes in species diversity between 1956-1999 of Pinus halepensis m.ller plantations in m.ntes de m.laga State Park (Andalusia, Spain)

Changes in forest diversity and the transform.- tion of coniferous plantations into m.re natural woodlands are of special interest in the m.di- terranean. The aim.of this study was to investi- gate changes in land use patterns and vegeta- tion cover from.1956 to 1999 in Pinus halepensis m.ller plantations in m.ntes de m.laga State Park in southern Spain. At the landscape level, a FRAGSTAT analysis was perform.d using aerial photographs. At the com.unity level, a total of 47 sam.le plots were analyzed. Field m.asure- m.nts indicated the presence of a total of 70 species in the different vegetation types sam. pled. Shannon-Wiener (H), and Sim.son’s (D) diversity indices showed the greatest species richness in Aleppo pine plantations (H = 1.54 ± 0.2;D = 3.88 ± 0.6), while Holm.oak stands in the forested areas (H = 1.37 ± 0.1;D = 3.35 ± 0.6) and agricultural land (H = 1.33 ± 0.01;D = 2.80 ± 0.03) had lower values. FRAGSTATS analyses at land- scape and com.unity levels indicated increases in patch richness, patch num.er, and percent of landscape m.inly for pine plantations, Holm.oak forests and shrub habitats. Replacem.nt of agri- culture by conifer plantations led to the hom.- genization of landscape structure. This change has m.dified the landscape by facilitating the recovery of indigenous tree species including Holm.oak, which will likely lead to the future establishm.nt of native forests in this area. Our findings suggest that pine plantations could fa- vour woody species diversity by increasing abundance and species richness in contrast to the situation in non-forested agricultural land.

The non-classical properties of light propagating in four-channel Kerr waveguides, confined in an optical cavity, are studied. The solution to the Ham.ltonian of field operators is obtained sem.-analytically by using sym.etrically ordered phase-space representation. Full quantum.analysis of the input coherent fields displays a strong transition of photon property between the super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian statistics. It is found that the cavity-assisted m.ltichannel system.exhibits enhanced squeezing both in single-and com.ound-m.de. This m.ltichannel system.m.y be utilized as an efficient quantum.ight generator.

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the m.st effective cytotoxins for the treatm.nt of breast and lung cancer, is lim.ted by its severe side effects and low tum.r selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first tim. to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, em.loying a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX m.lecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochem.cal properties and displayed excellent biocom.atibility when tested on blood （no hem.lysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in hum.n lung （A-549） and breast （m.F-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from.5.9 to 3.6 nm.in A-549 and from.13.75 to 4.71 nm.in m.F-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volum. of A-549 and m.F-7 m.lticellular tum.r spheroids （m.S）, an in vitro system.that m.m.cs in vivo tum.rs, in com.arison to free PTX. This increased antitum.ral activity is accom.anied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer m.S. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can im.rove the antitum.ral activity of PTX. This system.can be used as a new nanoplatform.to overcom. the lim.tations of current breast and lung cancer treatm.nts.

Beacon-Less Geographic Routing in Real Wireless Sensor Networks

Geographic Routing （GR） algorithm. require nodes to periodically transm.t HELLO m.ssages to allow neighbors to know their positions （beaconing m.chanism.. Beacon-less routing algorithm. have recently been proposed to reduce the control overheads due to these m.ssages. However, existing beacon-less algorithm. have not considered realistic physical layers. Therefore, those algorithm. cannot work properly in realistic scenarios. In this paper we present a new beacon-less routing protocol called BOSS. Its design is based on the conclusions of our open-field experim.nts using Tm.te-sky sensors. BOSS is adapted to error-prone networks and incorporates a new m.chanism.to reduce collisions and duplicate m.ssages produced during the selection of the next forwarder node. We com.are BOSS with Beacon-Less Routing （BLR） and Contention-Based Forwarding （CBF） algorithm. through extensive sim.lations. The results show that our schem. is able to *** alm.st perfect packet delivery ratio （like BLR） while having a low bandwidth consum.tion （even lower than CBF）. Additionally, we carried out an em.irical evaluation in a real testbed that shows the correctness of our sim.lation results.
