Sport participation and vigilance in children:Influence of different sport expertise

Purpose： The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types of sport expertise （externally-paced vs. self-paced sports） and vigilance performance in children by evaluating the cardiovascular fitness level of the participants. Methods： Three groups of children （11.0 ± 0.2 years） differentiated in terms of their regular sport participation （football players, n = 20; track and field athletes, n = 20; non-athletic controls, n = 20） took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In another session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task （PVT） to evaluate their vigilance performance under 2 conditions of velocity demands （normal vs. speed）. Results： The results revealed that both groups of sport practitioners had higher cardiovascular fitness than non-athlete controls. In contrast, no significant differences in the performance PVT were found between track and field athletes and controls. Crucially, football players showed better performance in the PVT than track and field athletes and controls. These between-group differences were not modulated by the speed demands of the task. Conclusion： The major novel finding of this research points to a positive relationship between sport participation and vigilance performance during childhood. We discuss our results in terms of the different hypotheses put forward in the literature to explain the relationship between regular exercise and cognitive fimctioning： the ＂cardiovascular fitness＂ and the ＂cognitive component skills＂ hypotheses.2018 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Shanghai University of Sport. Thyroid Metastases from Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma: Presentation of an Unusual Case and Literature Review

Clear cell type renal cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that can metastasize to many locations, but unusually spreads to thyroid. Therefore it is important to know the oncological background of the patient and to perform a complete immunohistochemical analysis of the thyroid lesion to obtain a correct diagnosis. Thyroidectomy can be considered in patients with no other metastasis or in those who present compressive symptoms as a palliative measure. We expose the case of a patient with clear cell type renal cell carcinoma, with a previously known bone metastasis of renal origin and symptomatic goiter containing a nodule that was found to be a metastasic lesion.

Epstein-Barr virus is related with 5-aminosalicylic acid, tonsillectomy, and CD19^+ cells in Crohn's disease

AIM: To study anti-Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) Ig G antibodies in Crohn′s disease in relation to treatment, immune cells, and prior tonsillectomy/***: This study included 36 CD patients and 36 healthy individuals(controls), and evaluated different clinical scenarios(new patient, remission and active disease), previous mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue removal(tonsillectomy and appendectomy) and therapeutic regimens(5-aminosalicylic acid, azathioprine, anti-tumor necrosis factor, antibiotics, and corticosteroids). T and B cells subsets in peripheral blood were analyzed by flow cytometry(markers included: CD45, CD4, CD8, CD3, CD19, CD56, CD2, CD3, TCRαβ and TCRγδ) to relate with the levels of anti-EBV Ig G antibodies, determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***: The lowest anti-EBV Ig G levels were observed in the group of patients that were not in a specific treatment(95.4 ± 53.9 U/m L vs 131.5 ± 46.2 U/m L, P = 0.038). The patients that were treated with 5-aminosalicylic acid showed the highest anti-EBV Ig G values(144.3 U/m L vs 102.6 U/m L, P = 0.045). CD19+ cells had the largest decrease in the group of CD patients that received treatment(138.6 vs 223.9; P = 0.022). The analysis of anti-EBV Ig G with respect to the presence or absence of tonsillectomy showed the highest values in the tonsillectomy group of CD patients(169.2 ± 20.7 U/m L vs 106.1 ± 50.3 U/m L, P = 0.002). However, in the group of healthy controls, no differences were seen between those who had been tonsillectomized and subjects who had not been operated on(134.0 ± 52.5 U/m L vs 127.7 ± 48.1 U/m L, P = 0.523).CONCLUSION: High anti-EBV Ig G levels in CD are associated with 5-aminosalicylic acid treatment, tonsillectomy, and decrease of CD19+ cells.
