In vivo assessment of intratumoral aspirin injection to treat hepatic tumors

AIM: To study the antineoplastic efficacy of 10% aspirin intralesional injection on VX2 hepatic tumors in a rabbit model. METHODS: Thirty-two male rabbits (age: 6-9 wk; body weight: 1700-2500 g) were inoculated with VX2 hepatic tumor cells (104 cells/rabbit) via supraumbilical median laparotomy. On day 4 post-implantation, when the tumors were about 1 cm in diameter, the rabbits were randomly divided into the following groups (n = 8 each group) to assess early (24 h) and late (7 d) antineoplastic effects of intratumoral injection of 10% bicarbonate aspirin solution (experimental groups) in comparison to intratumoral injection of physiological saline solution (control groups): group 1, 24 h control; group 2, 24 h experimental; group 3, 7 d control; group 4, 7 d experimental. The serum biochemistry profile (measurements of glycemia, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartateaminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase) and body weight measurements were obtained for all animals at the following time points: D0, before tumor implant; D4, day of treatment; D5, day of sacrifice for groups 1 and 2; D11, day of sacrifice for groups 3 and 4. Gross assessments of the abdominal and thoracic cavities were carried out upon sacrifice. The resected liver tissues, including hepatic tumors, were qualitatively (general morphology, signs of necrosis) and quantitatively (tumor area) assessed by histopathological analysis. RESULTS: Gross examination showed no alterations, besides the left hepatic lobe tumors, had occurred in the thoracic and abdominal cavities of any animal at any time point evaluated. However, the features of the tumor foci were distinctive between the groups. A numerical analysis to the non-linear fin problem

In this paper a numerical analysis is carried out to obtain the temperature distribution within a single fin. It is assumed that the heat transfer coefficient depends on the temperature. The complete highly non-linear problem is solved numerically and the variations of both, dimensionless surface temperature and dimensionless surface temperature gradient as well as heat transfer characteristics with the governing non-dimensional parameters of the problem are graphed and tabulated.

Artificial neural network with a cross-validation approach to blast-induced ground vibration propagation modeling

Given their technical and economic advantages,the application of explosive substances to rock mass excavation is widely ***,because of serious environmental restraints,there has been an increasing need to use complex tools to control environmental effects due to blast-induced ground *** the present study,an artificial neural network(ANN)with k-fold cross-validation was applied to a dataset containing 1114 observations that was obtained from published results;furthermore,quantitative and qualitative parameters were considered for ground vibration amplitude *** best ANN model obtained has a maximum coefficient of determination of 0.840 and a mean absolute error of 5.59 and it comprises 17 input parameters,12 neurons in a one-layer hidden layer,and a sigmoid transfer *** with the traditional models,the model obtained using the proposed methodology demonstrated better generalization ***,the proposed methodology offers an ANN model with higher prediction ability.

Spermatogenesis involves extremely marked cellular, genetic and chromatin changes resulting in the generation of the highly specialized sperm cell. Proteomics allows the identification of the proteins that compose the spermatogenic cells and the study of their function. The recent developments in mass spectrometry （MS） have markedly increased the throughput to identify and to study the sperm proteins. Catalogs of thousands of testis and spermatozoan proteins in human and different model species are becoming available, setting up the basis for subsequent research, diagnostic applications and possibly the future development of specific treatments. The present review intends to summarize the key genetic and chromatin changes at the different stages of spermatogenesis and in the mature sperm cell and to comment on the presently available proteomic studies.
