Digital Social Connectedness as a lifeline for Older People: Use and Non-use of VinclesBCN During the Pandemic

This article presents the results of a study that evaluated VinclesBCN during COVID-19. This digital-based public social service aims to prevent loneliness and isolation in +65-year-old adults living in Barcelona. Through service user(N = 12) and professional(N = 6) interviews and a questionnaire with service users(N = 255), we demonstrate the pivotal role of digital connectedness in transforming VinclesBCN into a lifeline during the pandemic. The analysis revealed the importance of sociability, social support, and, especially, entertainment in coping with pandemic fatigue and facilitating social connectivity and support among users. Users engaged in activities such as sharing images, songs, memes, and daily greetings to provide proximity, sociability, and care among users, whether they belonged to preexisting groups or were newly introduced to the platform. It also facilitated the identification of individuals who needed companionship, comfort, or more specialized support. The findings emphasize the significance of entertainment as a resilience-building strategy during times of uncertainty. Despite the positive impact, not all users equally used the platform. Non-use was strongly associated with being a woman, having a low educational level, having preexisting social relationships, less time of enrolment in the platform, as well as a high perception of loneliness, poor self-reported health, and low mood. The article underscores the need for further research into older adults' digital engagement during crises, its role in building resilience, and advocating for inclusive digital interventions that take into account diverse older adults' needs and experiences in crisis contexts.

Prey species may have their own optimal escape strategy to balance predation risks and the energetic cost of *** species have an advantage when maintaining a short fleeing distance,while others may favour an earlier escape based on microhabitat,size,or body ***,we examined the escape behaviour of the three syntopic Northeast Asian anuran species:Mongolian toads(Strauchbufo raddei),Amur brown frogs(Rana amurensis),and Japanese treefrogs(Dryophytes japonicus)in Mongolia,Russia,China and DPR *** examined flight initiation distance(FID;the distance from a potential predator to the point when the individual starts to flee)and distance fled(DF;distance between flight initiation and flight termination points)of each species and the effects of microhabitat,sex,and body *** raddei and *** had a longer FID than ***,and *** also had a longer DF than *** trends remained similar when dividing FID and DF by a size proxy(snout-vent length)for all *** suggests that the treefrog *** used a strategy to stay immobile even when they were detected,and the toad *** reacted quicker and more sensitively to predators despite the presence of *** *** had a significantly longer FID than males suggesting that females are more sensitive to predation risk in this species,but body size was not significant for any of the three *** results indicate that the three sympatric species have different escaping strategies,likely related to differences in physiology and crypticity.

Robust Machine learning Mapping of sEMG Signals to Future Actuator Commands in Biomechatronic Devices

A machine learning model for regression of interrupted Surface Electromyography(sEMG)signals to future control-oriented signals(e.g.,robot’s joint angle and assistive torque)of an active biomechatronic device for high-level myoelectric-based hierarchical control is proposed.A Recurrent Neural Network(RNN)was trained using output data,initially obtained from offline optimization of the biomechatronic(human–robot)device and shifted by the prediction *** input of the RNN consisted of interrupted sEMG signals(to mimic signal disconnections)and previous kinematic signals of the assistive *** RNN with a 0.1-s prediction horizon could predict the control-oriented joint angle and assistive torque with 92%and 86.5%regression accuracy,respectively,for the test *** proposed approach permits a fast,predictive,and direct estimation of control-oriented signals instead of an iterative process that optimizes assistive torque in the inverse dynamic simulation of a multibody human–robot *** with these interrupted input signals significantly improves the regression accuracy in the case of sEMG signal *** Robust Predictive Control-oriented Machine learning(Robust-MuscleNET)model can support volitional high-level myoelectric-based control of biomechatronic devices,such as exoskeletons,prostheses,and assistive/resistive *** work should study the application to prosthesis control as well as the repeatability of the high-level controller with electrode *** low-level hierarchical controller that manages the human–robot interaction,the assistance/resistance strategy,and the actuator coordination should also be studied.

For decades,researchers have known that when neurons lose their activating inputs,they can atrophy and even *** example,removing sensory nerve inputs from the arm to the spinal cord after amputation or cutting the spinal nerves can shrink the post-synaptic target zones(e.g.,Woods et al.,2000).From touch receptors for the hand and arm,primary nerve afferents enter the spinal cord,and axons travel in the dorsal columns to target the cuneate nucleus(Cu)of the brainstem on the same side of the body(Figure 1).When sensory loss is unilateral,the overwhelming result is for the associated primary target zone to shrink in total size(cross-sectional area),as compared to the size of the opposite side.

Achieving densely packed particles is desirable within the industries of ceramics,pharmaceuticals,defence and additive *** this work,we use the discrete element method(DEM)to determine the effect of wall parameters on the final packing density of mono-disperse spheres subject to 4 varying three-dimensional vibration and fill *** focus specifically on the impact of the container wall parameters on the particles'final packing *** on from the validation of the DEM simulation the particle-wall coefficient of restitution,the particle-wall coefficient of rolling friction and the particle-wall coefficient of sliding friction were varied individually and the effect on the final packing density *** relatively low particle-particle friction glass beads,the effect of these wall properties had no discernible effect on the final packing density *** on from these findings the particle-wall properties were varied at the extreme values of particle-particle coefficient of rolling friction and particle-particle coefficient of sliding *** a particle-particle coefficient of sliding friction=1,increases in particle-wall coefficient of restitution resulted in a minor increase in the final packing density of particles though this was not statistically *** a particle-particle coefficient of sliding friction=1,increases in particle-wall coefficient of rolling friction resulted in a minor decrease in the final packing density of the particles though again not to a degree where the trend can,with complete certainty,be distinguished from the random error across the ***,when the particle-particle coefficient of sliding friction=1,increases in particle-wall coefficient of sliding friction resulted in a significant decrease in the final packing density of *** decrease was attributed to the propagation of force chains throughout the *** significant decrease in final packing density with

Resistance of full-scale beams against close-in *** modeling and field tests

This paper explores the performances of a finite element simulation including four concrete models applied to a full-scale reinforced concrete beam subjected to blast loading. Field test data has been used to compare model results for each case. The numerical modelling has been, carried out using the suitable code lS-DYNA. This code integrates blast load routine(CONWEP) for the explosive description and four different material models for the concrete including: Karagozian & Case Concrete, Winfrith, Continuous Surface Cap Model and Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma models, with concrete meshing based on 10, 15, and 20 mm. Six full-scale beams were tested: four of them used for the initial calibration of the numerical model and two more tests at lower scaled distances. For calibration, field data obtained employing pressure and accelerometers transducers were compared with the results derived from the numerical simulation. Damage surfaces and the shape of rupture in the beams have been used as references for comparison. Influence of the meshing on accelerations has been put in evidence and for some models the shape and size of the damage in the beams produced maximum differences around 15%. In all cases, the variations between material and mesh models are shown and discussed.

The Influence of limestone Powder and Metakaolin Co-Blending on the Hydration Process and Mechanical Properties of Q-Phase Cement

A ternary system comprising Ca_(20)Al_(26)Mg_(3)Si_(3)O_(68)(Q-phase),limestone,and metakaolin is proposed,and its hydration behavior,hydration product phases,microstructure,and mechanical properties are investigated and compared with pure Q-phase *** results indicate that the ternary system exhibits exceptional and sustained compressive strength even under a 40℃environment,significantly outperforming pure *** mechanism lies in that metakaolin effectively inhibits the transformation of metastable ***,the interactions among Q-phase,limestone,and metakaolin further enhance the cementitious *** ternary system effectively addresses potential issues of strength loss in Q-phase cement application,and as a low-carbon cementitious material system,it holds promising potential applications.

The worldwide tremor of environmental degradation commonly represents the escalation of emissions levels and ecological footprints that harm the planet’s *** is because of using gigantic non-renewable energy resources,urbanization stream and massive economic activities in the major industrialized *** this situation,we investigate the influence of disaggregated energy measures,e.g.,renewable,and nuclear energy,income growth and urbanization on the load capacity factor(biocapacity divided by the ecological footprint)of major nuclear power countries,such as France,the USA,Canada,China,and Russia during *** this end,we utilize the CS-ARDl procedure because of the endogeneity,common correlation,non-stationarity in data and heterogeneity in panel *** contribute to considering the supply side dynamic of environmental degradation parameter,the load capacity,from the perspective of the top nuclear power nations that deviates our analysis from the prevailing scholarly ***,our findings confirm a significantly positive impact of renewable and nuclear energy on the load capacity factor in improving environmental ***,economic growth and urbanization negatively affect the load capacity dynamics in spurring environmental *** findings are robust across an alternative estimation technique,namely the Dumitrescu and Hurlin(DH)causation ***,we recommend formulating pragmatic policies to deter the detrimental effects of income and urbanization by properly utilizing sustainable energy resources to conserve the natural environment.
