Plant assemblage and diversity variation with human disturbances in coastal habitats of the western Arabian Gulf

Knowledge about plant diversity along disturbance gradients is essential for conservation and management of fragmented coastal *** study examined the effects of human disturbance intensity in coastal habitats of Kuwait on diversity,composition,identity and assemblage of vascular plant *** survey data from 113 plots （5m×5m each） were randomly selected in 51 sites at coastal fragmented habitats at three levels of disturbance intensities （high,moderate and low） and were statistically *** results revealed that about 76% of the recorded species are considered threatened species in Kuwait,most of which are being lost in high disturbed *** led to the dominance of Zygophyllum qatarense,Cornulaca aucheri and Salsola imbricata,which are species of disturbance ***,total plant cover and species diversity were higher in moderate and low disturbed habitats than in high disturbed *** diversity between high and low disturbed habitats was higher than either between high and moderate,or between moderate and low disturbed *** analyses showed statistically significant differences in composition of plant assemblages,which indicate high beta diversity between the habitat *** urbanization and industrialization are among the most serious threats that contribute to declines in biological diversity and rapid fragmentation of coastal habitats in *** protective enclosures in the disturbed habitats,planting endangered and vulnerable species,and establishing a natural reserve at Nuwaiseeb are recommended conservation actions to avoid loss of the fragmented coastal habitats and to facilitate restoration of native plants.

Effects of geomorphology and soil conditions on vegetation structure in conserved desert wadis: A case study of Jal AlZor escarpment, Kuwait

Variations in phytogeography of Jal Al-Zor wadi system in Sabah Al Ahmad Nature Reserve, an arid national park in Kuwait, in relation to physiographic and edaphic conditions were investigated using alpha diversity and multivariate analyses. A total of 66 plant species were recorded at low-relief and high-relief wadis. Altitude and slope gradients, grain size distribution and soil texture properties had a significant relationship with plant cover and plant diversity. There was a high diversity of life-forms along the wadi system with a dominant of therophytes(annuals) particularly in spring after winter rainfalls. Chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes were the dominant perennial life-forms. A chorological analysis documents the strong effect of Saharo-Arabian chorotype on the vegetation of the study area. Cluster analysis clarified eight vegetation assemblages along altitude and slope gradients within the wadi system. Alpha diversity of plant species was greater in plant assemblages at low-relief wadis than at high-relief wadis. Vegetation structure in this study showed that phytogeographically, wadis of Jal Al-Zor were closely related to the wadis in the Arabian deserts. The slope gradient pattern and edaphic conditions of plant assemblages and plant diversity in the conserved wadis of Jal Al-Zor may be suggested as a reference model for restoration strategy of disturbed low elevated wadis in the surrounding desert *** would include propagation of suitable plants such as Stipagrostis plumosa-haloxylon salicornicum-Rhanterium epapposum.

Developing a biomaterial for wound healing applications is still a ***,dysprosium oxide(Dy_(2)O_(3)),aluminum oxide(Al_(2)O_(3)),and graphene oxide(GO)were embedded in cast films based on polycaprolactone(PCL)to be examined for wound dressing *** techniques were used to characterize the fabricated films including X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),Raman,and scanning electron microscopy(SEM),besides their biological *** thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)exhibits high thermal stability as the scaffold weight decreases slightly to 98.6%after raising the temperature from room temperature to 280℃.The cell viability was investigated and it is shown that the viable cells grow up to approximately 93%at 75μg/***,the cell attachment shows excellent behavior as the cells attach on most of the surface of the modified PCL which shows high biocompatibility.

Eco-toxicity and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of Burullus Lake in Egypt

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAhs)are ubiquitous environmental contaminants of growing concern due to their potential ecological and human health *** study presents a comprehensive assessment of PAhs contamination in the surface sediments of Burullus Lake,a vital and second largest delta lake in *** aim was to evaluate the eco-toxicity and potential health risks associated with the presence of these *** seven sediment samples were collected from various drains in the southern part of Burullus *** extraction method was employed to extract PAhs(16PAhs)from the sediment ***,target compounds were located using *** results showed that samples contained PAhs levels ranging from 0.038×10^(-6)to 0.459×10^(-6),which is considered heavily polluted by the European standard for PAhs ***,there was no apparent source of PAhs in the elKhashah drain or the Brinbal Canal,as hPLC found none of the *** most prevalent compound in sediment samples along the study area was *** diagnostic indices in the present study indicated that the hydrocarbons in the region originated from pyrolytic and man-made sources along the drains of Burullus *** principal component analysis(PCA)and diagnostic ratios revealed that coal combustion and pyrolytic sources were responsible for the PAhs contamination in the surface *** non-carcinogenic risk(hI),which is the product of the hQs for the adult and child populations,respectively,was *** values under 1,therefore,demonstrated that they had no carcinogenic effects on human *** and MEQs in the sediments of Burullus Lake do not have a cancer-causing impact on *** the safety of nearby wildlife,aquatic life,and people,all activities that raise petroleum hydrocarbon levels in Burullus Lake must be adequately regulated and *** to the ecological risk assessment,there is little chance that PAhs will be found

Biochemical Liver Functions and Molecular Identification of Fasciola hepatica from Experimentally Infected Rat Model

The current study was performed to evaluate the liver function status as well as molecular characterization of the recovered worms in rats experimentally infected with F. hepatica. Sixteen male Wister rats aged 30 days were randomly allocated into two groups (n = 8). The first group was infected orally with 15 viable encysted metacercaria of F. hepatica per animal. The other group was kept non-infected (control group). At zero time (before infection), the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th weeks post-infection (WPI), blood and serum samples were collected via puncture of retro-orbital plexus of veins from each rat. Serum enzyme level (AST and ALT) and total protein were measured, and the serum protein profile was carried out using agarose gel electrophoresis. During the period of the experiment, serum ALT and AST activities and serum total globulins significantly increased while serum total proteins and albumin markedly decreased in the infected group. On the 14th WPI, the data of the electropherogram showed that globulin fractions (α1-, β- and γ-globulin) levels were significantly increased while α2-globulin was markedly decreased in the infected group. The molecular analysis confirmed the amplification of the ITS1, ITS2 and NDI genes of F. hepatica recovered from the infected liver of rats with amplicon sizes of 630, 510 and 560 bp, respectively. Sequencing of the amplified ITS gene resulted in the determination of 3 strains (PP108836, PP108837, and PP108838). Also, analysis of the ITS2 gene resulted in obtaining 3 isolates under the accession numbers (PP109065, PP109066, and PP109067). In conclusion, fasciolosis in the rat model is suitable for routine experimental infections and caused a pronounced liver dysfunction with discharging of the Fasciola eggs in the faeces and the development of adult stages in the bile ducts. Efficient electrocatalysts are vital to large-current hydrogen production in commercial water splitting for green energy ***,a novel heterophase engineering strategy is described to produce polymorphic CoSe_(2)*** composition of the electrocatalysts consisting of both cubic CoSe_(2)(c-CoSe_(2))and orthorhombic CoSe_(2)(o-CoSe_(2))phases can be controlled *** results demonstrate that junction-induced spin-state modulation of Co atoms enhances the adsorption of intermediates and accelerates charge transfer resulting in superior large-current hydrogen evolution reaction(hER)***,the CoSe_(2)based heterophase catalyst with the optimal c-CoSe_(2)content requires an overpotential of merely 240 mV to achieve 1,000 mA·cm^(-2)as well as a Tafel slope of 50.4 mV·dec^(-1).Furthermore,the electrocatalyst can maintain a large current density of 1,500 mA·cm^(-2)for over 320 h without *** results reveal the advantages and potential of heterophase junction engineering pertaining to design and fabrication of low-cost transition metal catalysts for large-current water splitting.

Radionuclides measurements and mineralogical studies on beach sands, East Rosetta Estuary, Egypt

Radiometric measurements were carried out for the beach sands from East Rosetta estuary to determine the activity concentrations of 238 U, 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K, using a hyper Pure Germanium spectrometer, to estimate the dose rates and radiation hazard indices. The average specific activities are 778.20 Bq/kg for 238 U; 646.89 Bq/kg for 226 Ra; 621.92 and 627.85 Bq/kg for the 222 Rn daughters 214 Pb and 214 Bi respectively. The average specific activity of 232 Th is 1510.25 Bq/kg, while the calculated specific activity for 40 K has an average of 8.41 Bq/kg. The average specific activity of 235 U is 38.61 Bq/kg. The average absorbed dose rate is 1211.36 nGy/h, 20 times higher than the estimated average global primordial radiation of 60 nGy/h and 6 times higher than that of the world range (10-200 nGy/h). The radium equivalent (Ra eq ) values are from 6 to 9 times the recommended value. The internal and external hazard indices (h int , h ex ) indicate that their values are from 6 to 11 times the permissible values of these indices. These higher values may be due to the presence of economic heavy minerals containing radionuclides as zircon and monazite as well as some trace minerals, thorite and uranothorite. The mineralogical study indicates the beach sands contain heavy minerals, zircon, monazite, rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, magnetite and garnet. The average abundance of zircon is 0.175 wt% ranging from 0.125 wt% to 0.239 wt%, while it is 0.004wt% ranging from 0.001 wt% to 0.007 wt% for monazite. The average abundance is 0.087 wt% for rutile; 2.029 wt% for ilmenite; 1.084 wt% for magnetite; 0.384 wt% for leucoxene and 0.295 wt% for garnet.

The design of an antenna requires a careful selection of its parameters to retain the desired ***,this task is time-consuming when the traditional approaches are employed,which represents a significant *** the other hand,machine learning presents an effective solution to this challenge through a set of regression models that can robustly assist antenna designers to find out the best set of design parameters to achieve the intended *** this paper,we propose a novel approach for accurately predicting the bandwidth of metamaterial *** proposed approach is based on employing the recently emerged guided whale optimization algorithm using adaptive particle swarm optimization to optimize the parameters of the long-short-term memory(LSTM)deep *** optimized network is used to retrieve the metamaterial bandwidth given a set of *** addition,the superiority of the proposed approach is examined in terms of a comparison with the traditional multilayer perceptron(ML),Knearest neighbors(K-NN),and the basic LSTM in terms of several evaluation criteria such as root mean square error(RMSE),mean absolute error(MAE),and mean bias error(MBE).Experimental results show that the proposed approach could achieve RMSE of(0.003018),MAE of(0.001871),and MBE of(0.000205).These values are better than those of the other competing models.
