As well as being of global cultural importance(from local tribal folklore to being an iconic species for conservation),the tapir plays an important role in its ecosystem as a herbivore and seed ***,the ecology and ethnozoology of the endangered Baird’s tapir in the north of Oaxaca,Mexico is poorly *** used camera traps to estimate its relative abundance and density and to describe the activity patterns of the northernmost population of Baird’s tapir in the Sierra Madre de *** knowledge concerning the tapir was also documented,along with the conservation strategies undertaken by the 2 indigenous communities that own the land where the study site is *** adult tapirs were photographed,and these were active 14 h per day,but were mainly nocturnal and *** estimated relative abundance(12.99±2.24 events/1000 camera days)and density values(0.07-0.24 individuals/km2)were both similar to those found in another site in Mexico located within a protected ***-structured interviews revealed that people have a basic understanding of the eating habits,activity and main predators of the *** were reports of hunting,although not among those respondents who regularly consume bush ***,the relative abundance and density estimates of tapir at the study site could be related to the favorable condition of the forest and the absence of hunting and consumption of tapir ***,the local people are conducting initiatives promoting the conservation of this ungulate and its habitat that combine to constitute a regional trend of habitat and wildlife protection.

This article presents the construction of scaffolds composed of polylactic acid(PLA)with different concentrations of hydroxyapatite(HA)by electrospinning,which were superficially modified with polypyrrole(PPy/I)by plasma polymerization.A preliminary study was conducted of the biological and mechanical behavior of the scaffolds when they were implanted in the back of rabbits for 30 days;bone cells differentiated from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)were *** bone cell and scaffold structures were characterized by histological,immunohistochemical,and mechanical stress ***–eosin staining showed good tissue *** immunohistochemical tests highlighted the presence of the main bone tissue proteins,such as collagen,osteocalcin,and *** PLA/HA scaffolds were observed to exhibit cell adhesion and proliferation properties;however,the response was much better in the scaffolds that had a higher concentration of HA and that were coated with PPy/*** results of the mechanical tests of the scaffolds indicated that the plasma treatment improved the adhesion and cell proliferation properties and contributed to the mechanical support,allowing the formation of neotissues with good viability of cell growth.

The present study aims to develop multilayer barrier-bioactive hybrid sol-gel coatings from a mixture of the silane precursors tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)and glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane(GPTMS)deposited on the Elektron 21 magnesium *** purpose of the inner layer(barrier coating)was to provide corrosion protection to the magnesium alloy,whereas the outer layer(bioactive coating)was doped with different Ca and Mg contents to produce a bioactive *** coatings were characterised using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and their corrosion behaviour was evaluated by anodic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF)at 37±0.5°*** experimental results showed that the multilayer coatings increased the corrosion resistance of the alloy up to three orders of magnitude during immersion in SBF *** the other hand,the presence of Ca and Mg in the bioactive coating promoted the growth of apatite-like ***,an increment of salt content favoured the formation of porous coatings,which allowed the access of the electrolyte to the substrate leading to their rapid *** the latter,this research endorses the premise that the TEOS-GPTMS hybrid system represents a promising alternative to produce bifunctional barrier-bioactive coatings.

Fumonisins are one of the most important groups of mycotoxins in agriculture and the food industry. They are produced by several widespread fungal pathogens of corn. Fumonisin contamination in maize-derived food and feeds causes several fatal diseases in livestock and poses a significant cancer risk to humans (Group 2B carcinogen). In the recent years, (unionisms have become a hot area in mycotoxin research. This review attempts to highlight the progress in the studies of molecular mechanisms for fumonisin biosynthesis and mode of action. The current understandings in the molecular basis for the cellular effects induced by fumonisms are discussed. Special attentions are paid to introduce the progress in the characterization of individual genes and enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of fumon isins.

The widespread uptake of different machine perfusion(MP)strategies for liver transplant has been driven by an effort to minimize graft *** to the cholangiocytes during the liver donation,preservation,or early posttransplant period may result in stricturing of the biliary tree and inadequate biliary *** problem continues to trouble clinicians,and may have catastrophic consequences for the graft and *** injury,as a result of compromised hepatic artery flow,is a well-known cause of biliary strictures,sepsis,and graft ***,very similar lesions can appear with a patent hepatic artery and these are known as ischemic type biliary lesions(ITBL)that are attributed to microcirculatory dysfunction rather than main hepatic arterial *** the warm and cold ischemic period duration appear to influence the onset of *** of the commonly used MP techniques deliver oxygen to the graft cells,and therefore may minimize the cholangiocyte injury and subsequently reduce the incidence of *** clinical experience and published evidence grows for these modalities,the impact they have on ITBL rates is important to *** this review,the evidence for the three commonly used MP strategies(abdominal normothermic regional perfusion[A-nrP],hypothermic oxygenated perfusion[HOPE],and normothermic machine perfusion[nMP])for ITBL prevention has been critically *** with ITBL definitions used in trials,coupled with variations in techniques of MP,make interpretation ***,the evidence suggests that both HOPE and A-nrP prevent ITBL in donated after circulatory death grafts compared to cold *** evidence for ITBL prevention in donor after brain death grafts with any MP technique is weak.

Stainless steel implants are suitable candidates for bone replacement due to their cytocompatibility and mechanical resistance,but they suffer from lack of bioactivity and are prone to bacterial ***,to overcome those limitations,in this study we developed by electrophoretic deposition(EPD),an innovative surface coating made of(i)zein,a natural fibroblast-friendly polymer,(ii)bioactive glass,a pro-osteogenic inorganic material and(iii)copper containing bioactive glass,an antibacterial and pro-angiogenic *** images confirmed that porous,uniform and free of cracks coatings were obtained by EPD;moreover,coatings were resistant to mechanical stress as demonstrated by the tape test,resulting in a 4B classification of adhesion to the *** coatings were cytocompatible as indicated by metabolism evaluation of human fibroblasts,endothelial cells and mature or progenitor osteoblasts cultivated in direct contact with the *** also maintained pro-osteogenic properties towards undifferentiated progenitor cells that expressed osteogenic genes after 15 days of direct *** conferred antibacterial properties as biofilm formation of the joint pathogens Staphylococcus aureus,Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli was significantly reduced in comparison with copper-free coatings(preover,this anti-infective activity resulted as targeted towards bacteria while the cells viability was preserved when cells and bacteria were cultivated in the same environment by a co-culture ***,copper ability to recruit blood vessels and to inhibit bacterial infection was confirmed in vivo where the growth of *** biofilm was inhibited and the formation of new(r spread)blood vessels was observed.

Background : The objective of this study was to validate an animal model for dry eye during and after the administration of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate(OAS) in new Zealand white(nZW) *** : OAS(1%) was applied three times per day to 30 eyes of 15 healthy nZW rabbits. Sacrifice, enucleation, and lacrimal gland removal took place on days 15, 21,and 30(OAS group). A second group(n = 5) was used as control. Clinical evaluations took place on days 3, 10, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30. The primary endpoints were:Schirmer I test, tear break-up time(TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining. As secondary endpoints, clinical changes including intraocular pressure, and histopathology were *** : While OAS was administered, the Schirmer I test showed a statistically significant reduction for OAS group versus control( p nd versus basal production( p nificant differences between groups(days 3 and 10;p = 0.001) and versus basal values(day 3;p rescein staining showed a statistically significant difference(day 3;p = 0.001). The most frequent clinical finding was conjunctival hyperemia(76.9% OAS vs. 20% control). For histopathology, all OAS subjects presented some degree of inflammation(86.7% minimal;13.3% mild) whereas the control presented only 30% minimal inflammation. Goblet cell density showed no *** : The effectiveness of the OAS dry eye model in nZW rabbits as reported in previous studies was confirmed, provided that the application of the drug is maintained throughout the intervention;it is not a viable model after OAS administration is suspended.
