A new Fe_(3)O_(4) magnetic nanoparticles supported manganese salen complex was successfully prepared by at-taching manganese acetates to a novel N,N'-bis(salicylidine)ethylenediamine ligand functionalized Fe_(3)O_(4).The as-prepared catalyst was characterized by TGA,XRD,FTIR,VSM,and *** was found to be an efficient cata-lyst for the synthesis of benzopyranopyrimidines in aqueous *** catalytic activity and ease of recovery from the reaction mixture using external magnet,and several reuse times without significant losses in performance are additional eco-friendly attributes of this catalytic system.

The synergistic effect of honey and cinnamon against Streptococcus mutans bacteria

Objective: To investigate the effect of Iranian honey, cinnamon and their combination against Streptococcus mutans ***: Nine experimental solutions were examined in this study, including two types of honey(pasteurized and sterilized), two types of cinnamon extract(dissolved in distilled water or dimethyl sulfoxide) and five different mixtures of cinnamon in honey(prepared by admixing 1%–5% w/w of cinnamon extract into 99%–95% w/w of honey, respectively).Meanwhile, each of mentioned agent was considered as the first solution while it was diluted into seven serially two-fold dilutions(from 1:2 to 1:128 v/v).Therefore, eight different concentrations of each agent were *** antibacterial tests were performed through blood agar well diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) was ***, the data were subjected to statistical analysis incorporating Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests(a = 0.01).Results: The highest zone of inhibition was recorded for the mixtures of honey and cinnamon while all the subgroups containing 95%–99% v/v of honey were in the same range(P < 0.01).The MIC for both honey solutions were obtained as 500 mg/mL whereas it was 50 mg/m L for both cinnamon ***, the MIC related to all honey/cinnamon mixtures were 200 mg/***: A profound synergistic effect of honey and cinnamon was observed against Streptococcus mutans while there was no significant difference among extracts containing 99%–95% v/v of honey admixing with 1%–5% v/v of cinnamon, respectively.

BMI-Adjusted Tube Current in Chest CT and Comparison of Lifetime Attributable Risk (LAR) of Breast Cancer in Two Different BMI-Based Protocols

Possible strategies to reduce radiation dose during CT scanning have been investigated over recent decades;here the optimization of the tube current and its link with patient’s cancer incidence are being evaluated. 154 consecutive trauma patients with the need for chest CT scan were included. Two different BMI-adjusted CT protocols at a fixed voltage tube and the same scan length were applied. Dose estimation parameters like CT dose index (CTDI), dose length product (DLP) and effective breast dose were calculated. Breast surface dose was obtained by using thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) and eventually, the life attributable risk (LAR) of cancer incidence was estimated. The mean effective dose was 4.87 ± 2.3 mSv and 5.12 ± 2.8 mSv for patients who were scanned with tube currents of 120 mAs and 200 mAs, respectively. There was no significant difference between organ surface doses for females but in males it was notable. The risk of cancer incidence is lower for protocol 1 in comparison with protocol 2. Optimizing tube current of 120 mAs reduced breast surface dose up to 50% in comparison with the tube current of 200 mAs. In trauma patients, using lower tube current based on BMI has notable impact on the absorbed dose in the breast and can reduce the breast cancer risk by nearly 33.6% for women.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most important hospital infections in hospitalized patients, which is associated with increased mortality and patient costs. The tracheal tube itself seems to be a major risk factor for VAP. Contaminated secretions pass through the endotracheal tube and reach the lungs. Also, bacteria form a bacterial biofilm on the tracheal tube and are transferred from there to the lungs. Different tracheal tube designs have been produced to overcome these cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of an Evac tracheal tube covered with antibiotics and normal on the incidence of pneumonia caused by the ventilator. Research method: 180 patients were randomly intubated in three groups of 60 people with three types of tracheal tubes, Evac and Bactiguard. Clinical examinations, endotracheal tube aspiration culture, and chest radiography were obtained from the patients and the incidence of VAP was calculated based on the CPIS standard. The relationship between the type of endotracheal tube and the incidence of VAP and the length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) and being discharged alive from the ICU were investigated. Findings and conclusions: The average incidence of VAP for the group of patients intubated with a conventional tracheal tube was 50%, EVAC was 45% and Bactiguard was 40%. The results showed that there is no significant relationship between the incidence of ventilator-induced pneumonia and the type of tracheal tube. The incidence of ventilator-induced pneumonia was not significantly reduced by suctioning subglottic secretions and Bactiguard tracheal tubes. It seems that using one method alone is not effective in reducing ventilator-induced pneumonia.

Experimental and Simulation Validation of Piezoelectric Road Energy Harvesting

This project strived to develop a prototype road piezoelectric energy harvester RPEH system using five Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) PZT 5H modules (stacks) that are embedded in the road by means of a housing unit to harvest energy from vehicles stressing the modules. The work is an extension of our previous published work in the same journal. The design considered many factors to optimize the harvested energy. The proposed system first captures mechanical energy using a designed module that transfers the energy to the piezoelectric stacks. Then the captured energy will be converted into electrical energy by the piezoelectric phenomenon. The harvested energy is stored in a storage device, then analyzed by an oscilloscope through the acquisition of the harvested voltage, current, power, and energy. When testing the RPEH with the wheel tracking machine, varying resistor loads where connected to the output of the RPEH to address the optimum power delivered to the load. The optimum load was found to be 950 kΩ, and the optimal harvested energy was recorded as 45 uJ.

Antibiotic Resistance in Blood Culture Samples from Patients Referred to Razi Laboratory of Rasht, 2006-2011

Introduction: Irregular wide antibiotic administration by physicians and over the counter use of them had led to inappropriate or non-essential choice of antibiotic. If blood related diseases like sepsis and bacteremia, have not been diagnosed and treated as soon as possible, they can make high complications and mortalities. This study was conducted to survey of epidemiological changes about frequency of micro-organisms in blood cultures in Razi laboratory of Rasht during 2006 to 2011. Material & Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study performed by information database of Razi laboratory. For all of positive samples addressed for blood culture, anti-biograms had been done by method of Kirby & Bauer and agar diffusion. Last, formation or deformation of growth zone was evaluated and on the basis of standard table, results were classified to three categories of sensitive, intermediate and resistance. All of common standard antibiotic disks had been used in this survey. Results: In all cases which addressed for culture (466 cases) 43 subjects (9.22%) were positive and one of them was contaminated. The most frequent bacteria separated from the blood cultures were respectively: coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella and coagulase positive Staphylococcus. Relation between type of bacteria and gender of patients was significant (P = 0.001) in which in female cases it was the most frequent. The most resistance in all of applied antibiotics in coagulase negative Staphylococcus group was 60.2%, in gram negative non non-fermentative bacillus group was 43.16% and in gram negative intestinal bacteria group was 39.25%. Discussion & Conclusion: Although there are similar results in the pattern of resistance in comparison of other studies, pattern of this study is unique and exclussive for Rasht city and it is based on hygienic condition of Guilan province.
