Using true‑triaxial stress path to simulate excavation‑induced rock damage:a case study

This study presents an example illustrating the role of in situ 3D stress path method in simulating the roof damage development observed in the Mine-by tunnel at Underground research Laboratory(UrL)located in Manitoba,*** 3D stress path,at the point 1 cm in the crown of the Mine-by tunnel,was applied to a cubic Lac du Bonnet(LdB)granite sample to further understand the roof damage process and the associated *** careful calibrations,a numerical model was used to reproduce the experiment,which produced similar seismicity processes and source *** emission(AE)events obtained from laboratory and numerical modeling were converted to locations in relation to the tunnel face and were compared to the feld microseismicity(MS)occurring in the upper notch region of the Mine-by *** crack development and damage mechanism are carefully *** diference between tests and feld monitoring was *** intermediate principal stress(σ_(2))unloading process was carried out in numerical simulation to investigate its role in rock damage *** results clearly showedσ_(2)could play a signifcant role both in damage development and failure *** should be considered when predicting the damage region in underground *** study highlights the potential role of laboratory and numerical stress path tests to investigate fracture processes and mechanisms occurring during engineering activities such as tunnel excavation.

A note on circle packing

The problem of packing circles into a domain of prescribed topology is considered. The circles need not have equal radii. The Collins-Stephenson algorithm computes such a circle packing. This algorithm is parMlelized in two different ways and its performance is reported for a triangular, planar domain test case. The implementation uses the highly parallel graphics processing unit （GPU） on commodity hardware. The speedups so achieved are discussed based on a number of experiments.

rEGrESSION MODEL PrEDICTING THE APPrAISED UNIT VALUE OF LAND IN SAN FrANCISCO COUNTY BASED ON LEED-NC PUBLIC TrANSPOrTATION ACCESS CrITErIA

As the need for environmental certification systems grows, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (LEED-NC) is being widely adopted in the US to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings. However, no research has been conducted to investigate its economic impact on appraised land value. The objectives of this study are to quantify the impact of the LEED-NC Credit Alternative Transportation: Public Transportation Access (PTA) in the sustainable sites category on appraised land value and to develop a regression model that predicts the appraised unit value of parcels. San Francisco County was chosen because of its well-organized transportation systems. First, a LEED-NC map was created to identify PTA-qualified parcels. Second, sample parcels were randomly selected. Last, Pearson’s correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis were sequentially performed. The results of this study indicated that the LEED PTA criteria are significant factors associated with an increase in the appraised unit value of parcels within San Francisco County. The findings of this study can encourage real-estate developers to site their projects according to the LEED-NC PTA criteria.

Assessing habitat quality of the mountain nyala Tragelaphus buxtoni in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia

Populations of the endangered mountain nyala Tragelaphus buxtoni are significantly threatened by the loss of critical habitat. Population estimates are tentative, and information on the species＇ distribution and available habitat is required for for-mulating immediate management and conservation strategies. To support management decisions and conservation priorities, we integrated information from a number of small-scale observational studies, interviews and reports from multiple sources to define habitat parameters and create a habitat quality model for mountain nyala in the Bale Mountains. For our analysis, we used the FunConn model, an expertise-based model that considers spatial relationships （i.e., patch size, distance） between the species and vegetation type, topography and disturbance to create a habitat quality surface. The habitat quality model showed that approxi- mately 18,610 km^2 （82.7% of our study area） is unsuitable or poor habitat for the mountain nyala, while 2,857 km^2 （12.7%） and 1,026 km^2 （4.6%） was ranked as good or optimal habitat, respectively. Our results not only reflected human induced habitat deg-radation, but also revealed an extensive area of intact habitat on the remote slopes of the Bale Mountain＇s southern and southeast- ern escarpments. This study provides an example of the roles that expert knowledge can still play in modem geospatial modeling of wildlife habitat. New geospatial tools, such as the FunConn model, are readily available to wildlife managers and allow them to perform spatial analyses with minimal software, data and training requirements. This approach may be especially useful for species that are obscure to science or when field surveys are not practical .

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in malignant otitis externa:A systematic review of the literature

Objective:To review the role of adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBOT)in the treatment of malignant otitis externa(MOE).Data sources:PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,Science Direct,and Cochrane Library were searched for the following concepts:“hyperbaric oxygen”and“malignant or necrotizing otitis externa.”Methods:Studies were included if they contained(1)patients with reported evidence of MOE,(2)employment of adjuvant HBOT,(3)details on patients’medical condition,and(4)documented survival *** information included patient demographics,underlying medical conditions,infectious etiology,signs and symptoms,medical and surgical treatments,duration of medical treatment,mean follow up time,HBOT setting,number of HBOT sessions,complications,survival rate,and all-cause ***:A total of 16 studies comprising 58 patients(mean age 68.0 years)were *** was present in 94.7%of cases and Pseudomonas spp(64.3%)was the most common infectious *** nerve VII was involved in 55.2%of ***,the disease cure rate with adjuvant HBOT was 91.4%and all-cause mortality was 8.6%.Among those who had cranial nerve VII involvement,72.0%had return of function and 93.8%of them ***:HBOT may be an effective treatment option for refractory or advanced MOE but its efficacy remains unproven due to lack of strong scientific ***,its therapeutic value should not be underestimated given good results and few adverse events reported in this study.

Polycrystalline Si(poly-Si)-based passivating contacts are promising candidates for high-efficiency crystalline Si solar *** show that nanosecond-scale pulsed laser melting(PLM)is an industrially viable technique to fabricate such contacts with precisely controlled dopant concentration profiles that exceed the solid solubility *** demonstrate that conventionally doped,hole-selective poly-Si/SiO_(x)contacts that provide poor surface passivation of c-Si can be replaced with Ga-or B-doped contacts based on non-equilibrium *** overcome the solid solubility limit for both dopants in poly-Si by rapid cooling and recrystallization over a timescale of∼25 *** show an active Ga dopant concentration of∼3×10^(20)cm^(−3)in poly-Si which is six times higher than its solubility limit in c-Si,and a B dopant concentration as high as∼10^(21) cm^(−3).We measure an implied open-circuit voltage of 735 mV for Ga-doped poly-Si/SiO_(x)contacts on Czochralski Si with a low contact resistivity of 35.5±2.4 mΩcm^(2).Scanning spreading resistance microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy show large diffusion and drift current in the p-n junction that contributes to the low contact *** results suggest that PLM can be extended for hyperdoping of other semiconductors with low solubility atoms to enable high-efficiency devices.
