Impact of invasive Ageratina adenophora on relative performance of woody vegetation in different forest ecosystems of Kumaun Himalaya,India

Invasive plant Ageratina adenophora(Sprengel)***&*** has invaded majority of the temperate forests in Kumaun,Central *** on *** invaded forest types,their structural attributes,population demography and regeneration status are still at rudimentary *** this,the present study was conducted to assess the impacts of *** on vegetational attributes and regeneration status of three forest types,viz.,Oak(Quercus oblongata ***),Pine(Pinus roxburghii Sarg.)and Cypress(Cupressus torulosa ***).We selected three sites for each forest type and each site was further purposively stratified into paired sampling plots of 1 ha each i.e.,*** invaded and uninvaded *** results showed large densities of cut stumps or felled trees throughout invaded sites,but with fewer fire signs in comparison to uninvaded *** uninvaded sites,total density and basal area calculated for woody species were relatively higher than those in invaded sites,although results were insignificant(p>0.05).With the exception for Cypress forests,vegetation indices showed low woody species richness and diversity in invaded Oak and Pine ***,regeneration of ***,*** and *** tree species did not differ significantly(p>0.05)between invaded and uninvaded *** insignificant differences clearly imply that ***'s presence has not entirely changed the perennial plant communities in terms of composition,structure and natural ***,tree species with poor or no regeneration status requires special attention and needs management strategies involving control of invasive species in forest ecosystems.

Immuolocalization of nestin in pancreatic tissue of mice at different ages

AIM： To localize nestin positive cells （NPC） in pancreatic tissue of mice of different ages. METHODS： Paraffin sections of 6-8 um of fixed pancreatic samples were mounted on poly-L-lysine coated slides and used for Immunolocalization using appropriate primary antibodies （Nestin, Insulin, Glucagon）, followed by addition of a fluorescently labeled secondary antibody. The antigen-antibody localization was captured using a confocal microscope （Leica SP 5 series）. rESULTS： In 3-6 d pups, the NPC were localized towards the periphery of the endocrine portion, as evident from immunolocalization of insulin and glucagon, while NPC were absent in the acinar portion. At 2 wk, NPC were localized in both the exocrine and endocrine portions. Interestingly, in 4-wk-old mice NPC were seen only in the endocrine portion, towards the periphery, and were colocalised with the glucagon positive cells. In the pancreas of 8- wk-old mice, the NPC were predominantly localized in the central region of the islet clusters, where immunostaining for insulin was at a maximum. CONCLUSION： We report for the first time the immunolocalization of NPC in the pancreas of mice of different ages （3 d to 8 wk） with reference to insulin and glucagon positive cells. The heterogeneous localization of the NPC observed may be of functional and developmental significance and suggest（s） that mice pancreatic tissue can be a potential source of progenitor cells. NPC from the pancreas can be isolated, proliferated and programmed to differentiate into insulin secreting cells under the appropriate microenvironment.

Non-invasive optical characterization and estimation of Zn porosity in gas tungsten arc welding of Fe–Al joints using Cr model and OES measurements

In this study,we employed a non-invasive approach based on the collisional radiative(Cr)model and optical emission spectroscopy(OES)measurements for the characterization of gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW)discharge and quantification of Zn-induced porosity during the GTAW process of Fe–Al *** OES measurements were recorded as a function of weld current,welding speed,and input *** OES measurements revealed significant line emissions from Zn-I in 460–640 nm and Ar-I in 680–800 nm wavelength ranges in all experimental *** OES coupled Cr model approach for Zn-I line emission enabled the simultaneous determination of both essential discharge parameters *** temperature and electron ***,these predictions were used to estimate the Zn-induced porosity using OES-actinometry on Zn-I emission lines using Ar as actinometer *** OES-actinometry results were in good agreement with porosity data derived from an independent approach,i.e.x-ray radiography *** current study shows that OES-based techniques can provide an efficient route for real-time monitoring of weld quality and estimate porosity during the GTAW process of dissimilar metal joints.

Formulation and evaluation of co-prodrug of flurbiprofen and methocarbamol

The current work envisages synthesis of an ester prodrug of flurbiprofen whereby its carboxylic group was condensed with a skeletal muscle relaxant methocarbamol, with the aim of synergistic activity of two drugs, avoid flurbiprofen mediated gastro-intestinal damage and minimize the ulceration tendency of flurbiprofen. The synthesized prodrug was characterized and confirmed by physicochemical and spectroscopic studies. Solubility and partition coefficient studies indicated an increased lipophilicity and thus better suitability for oral administration than the parent drugs and the protein binding studies revealed a low protein binding capacity of the mutual prodrug. Subsequently, in-vitro hydrolysis was studied in different pH, simulated gastric fluid, simulated intestinal fluid and plasma and quantitative evaluation was performed by high performance liquid chromatography. It was found that the prodrug remained unhydrolyzed in the stomach after absorption however, underwent rapid cleavage by the esterases in blood to give the parent drug. Furthermore, the mutual ester prodrug was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, skeletal muscle relaxation, ulcerogenic and total acid content activity and was found to possess comparable activity with that of the parent drugs. Microscopic structures of the stomach tissues revealed significant reduction in gastric ulcer formation of mice gastric mucosa as compared to parent carboxylic acid drug.

Darks and Stripes:Effects of Clothing on Weight Perception

In many societies,appearing slim(corresponding to a small body-mass index)is considered *** fashion industry has been attempting to cater to this trend by designing outfits that can enhance the appearance of *** anecdotal rules,widespread in the world of fashion,are to choose dark clothes and avoid horizontal stripes,in order to appear *** far,empirical evidence has been unable to conclusively determine the validity of these rules,and there is consequently much controversy regarding the impact of both color and patterns on the visual perception of *** this paper,we aim to close this gap by presenting the results from a series of large-scale crowdsourcing studies that investigate the above two *** gathered a dataset of around 1000 images of people from the Web together with their ground-truth weight and height as well as clothing attributes about colors and *** elicit the effects of colors and patterns,we asked crowd workers to estimate the weight in each *** the analysis,we controlled potential confounds by matching images in pairs where the two images differ with respect to color or pattern,but are similar with respect to other relevant *** created image pairs in two ways:firstly,observationally,i.e.,from two real images;and secondly,experimentally,by manipulating the color or pattern of clothing in a real image via photo *** on our analysis,we conclude that dark clothes indeed decrease perceived weight slightly but statistically significantly,and horizontal stripes have no discernible effect compared to solid light-colored *** results contribute to advancing the debate around the effect of specific clothing colors and patterns and thus provide empirical grounds for everyday fashion ***,our work gives an outlook on the vast opportunities of using crowd sourcing in the modern fashion industry.

The simplest route to generating a train of attosecond pulses

We report on two novel routes to generating a train of attosecond pulses from a broad discrete spectrum in the near-infrared–visible–ultraviolet *** extends an integer-temporal-Talbot(ITT)concept to include high-order spectral dispersions and generates a pulse train that completely satisfies the transform-limited *** other numerically explores the optimum conditions under which we can obtain an attosecond pulse train that approximately satisfies the transform-limited *** second method is more practical than the *** of these methods is extremely simple and robust;we need only to place a few thin dispersive materials in the optical path and to adjust their thicknesses without spatially dispersing the frequency *** numerically demonstrate the generation of a train of attosecond pulses with a transform-limited pulse duration of 728 as and a repetition period of 8.03 fs in gaseous parahydrogen.

Impacts of Coriaria nepalensis colonization on vegetation structure and regeneration dynamics in a mixed conifer forest of Indian Central Himalaya

This study evaluated impacts of Coriaria nepalensis *** on soil characteristics,vegetation structure and composition,regeneration status and expected future compositional changes,biomass and carbon stock in tree species of a mixed conifer forest of Central *** sites(1 ha each in an old landslide area)differing in Coriaria density(low:20 individuals ha^(-1);medium:120 ***^(-1);high:190 ***^(-1))were used to enumerate the tree species.A total of 9 tree species and 2830 individuals were recorded from the three study sites that represented a gradient of Coriaria *** of species varied from 3 to 7 and the individuals from 690 to 1270 per site with lowest numbers at low Coriaria density and highest at medium Coriaria *** number of seedlings increased with increasing Coriaria density,and the sites were unique in their seedling composition,indicating marked temporal *** wise regeneration analysis showed that regeneration was poor at the site with low Coriaria density and good at the high-density site where many species emerged as *** results indicate that the ameliorative effects of Coriaria in terms of soil buildup,and accumulation of nutrients and organic matter helped more species to colonize the *** facilitative ability of Coriaria can be used to restore degraded forest ecosystems of Indian Central Himalaya.
