Systems approaches to urban underground space planning and management-A review

The necessity to recognize the subsurface or underground and all its current and potential uses as part of our urban environment,to integrate this into urban planning and governance,and to foster conscious allocation of subsurface space has been increasingly recognized over the last *** the same time,systems thinking as a‘buzz-word’has gained relevance for approaching complex problem areas in all kinds of disciplines including those preoccupied with the *** paper reviews the literature about urban underground planning through a *** set this in context,it is outlined how organizational principles for the urban subsurface have evolved,and the main aspects of systems thinking are introduced followed by a discussion of how this thinking could be applied to the urban *** and tools presented in the recent literature in the field are then reviewed based on this perspective,asking how systemic the proposed strategies and tools are when the local geology,as well as legal and institutional settings are accepted as a baseline for analysis or *** approaches built on this premise have the potential to capture existing and evolving complexities,foster a better understanding of the value of subsurface space for a city and ultimately enable an efficient and fair allocation of underground ***,propositions for holistic solutions remain dispersed,interventions often remain based in an engineering mindset,and a shift in mind-set remains a *** research in collaboration with local and regional administrations or authorities based on systems thinking frameworks could help to facilitate this shift.

With its main features of cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone sclerosis and osteophyte formation, osteoarthritisrepresents a multifactorial disease with no effective treatment options. As biomechanical shift in thetrabecular network may be a driver for further cartilage degeneration, bone enhancement could possibly delayOA progression. Magnesium is known to be osteoconductive and already showed positive effects in OA *** aimed to use magnesium cylinders to enhance subchondral bone quality, condition of cartilage and painsensation compared to sole drilling in vivo. After eight weeks of implantation in rabbits, significant increase insubchondral bone volume and trabecular thickness with constant bone mineral density was found indicatingfavored biomechanics. As representative for pain, a higher number of CD271+ vessels were present in controlsamples without magnesium. However, this result could not be confirmed by sensitive, objective lamenessevaluation using a pressure sensing mat and no positive effect could be shown on either cartilage degenerationevaluated by OArSI score nor the presence of regenerative cells in CD271-stained samples. The presented resultsshow a relevant impact of implanted magnesium on key structures in OA pain with missing clinical relevanceregarding pain. Further studies with shifted focus should examine additional structures as joint capsule orosteophytes.

Comparative studies on fouling of homogeneous anion exchange membranes by different structured organics in electrodialysis

Five negatively charged organic compounds with different structures, sodium methane sulfonate(MS), sodium benzene sulfonate(BS), sodium 6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulfonate(NSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS), were used to examine the fouling of an anion exchange membrane(AEM) in electrodialysis(ED),to explore the effect of molecular characteristics on the fouling behavior on the AEM and changes in the surface and electrochemical properties of the AEM. results indicated that the fouling degree of the AEM by the different organics followed the order:SDBS > SDS > NSS > BS > MS. SDBS and SDS formed a dense fouling layer on the surface of the AEM, which was the main factor in the much more severe membrane fouling, and completely restricted the transmembrane ion migration. The other three organics caused fouling of the AEM by adsorption on the surface and/or accumulation in the interlayer of the AEM, and exhibited almost no influence on the transmembrane ion migration. It was also concluded that the organics with benzene rings caused more severe fouling of the AEM due to the stronger affinity interaction and steric effect between the organics and the AEM compared with organics with aliphatic chains.

Polypeptide analysis for nanopore-based protein identification

Presently,proteins are identified by cleaving them with proteases,measuring the mass to charge ratio of the fragments with a mass spectrometer,and matching the fragments to segments within known proteins in *** earlier demonstrated that a nanometer-scale pore formed by aerolysin(AeL)can discriminate between,and therefore identify,three similar size proteins from their trypsin-cleaved polypeptide *** this nanopore-protease method,the protein’s identity is instead determined from characteristic ionic current blockade patterns caused by the polypeptide fragments that enter the *** results also suggested that not all of the theoretically expected cleavage products partition into the *** better understand the mechanism by which polypeptide fragments are captured,and how different polypeptides reduce the pore’s ionic current,we studied the effects of 11 identical length polypeptides with different net charges and charge *** show that under certain experimental conditions,negative,positive,and neutral polypeptides are driven into the AeL pore by the same applied voltage *** capture rate and dwell time of polypeptides in the pore depend strongly on the ionic strength,the magnitude of the applied voltage,and the net charge and charge distribution of the *** dwell time distribution depends nonmonotonically on the applied voltage(regardless of the polymer’s net charge),and its maximum value depends on the polypeptide net charge and charge *** maximum dwell time for different polypeptides does not occur at the same applied voltage amplitude,which conceivably might complicate the detection and discrimination of some polypeptide *** additional experiments,computer simulations,and artificial intelligence research are needed to better understand how to optimize the partitioning of enzymatically cleaved fragments into the AeL nanopore,the method is still capable of accurately identifying

In recent years the occurrence of civilisation related diseases such as diabetes and obesity is increasing at a dramatic rate. This results in a growing consumer awareness of relationships between diet and health. Industry is respond ing to this trend by introducing products with a healthy image, including products with dietary fibre. Every year about 500 products are being launched globally with statements regarding their fibre content. Dietary fibre is usually defined as "the edible parts of plants or analogous carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion and absorption in the human small intestine with complete or partial fermentation in the large intestine. Dietary fibre includes polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, lignin, and associated substances. Dietary fibres promote beneficial physiological effects including laxation, and/or blood cholesterol attenuation, and/or blood glucose attenuation" (AACC, 2001).

Prevalence of-and risk factors for work disability in Dutch patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM To determine the prevalence of work disability in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), and to assess risk factors associated with work *** For this retrospective cohort study, we retrieved clinical data from the Dutch IBD Biobank on july 2014, containing electronic patient records of 3388 IBD patients treated in the eight University Medical Centers in the Netherlands. Prevalence of work disability was assessed in 2794 IBD patients and compared with the general Dutch population. Multivariate analyses were performed for work disability(sick leave, partial and full disability) and long-term full work disability(> 80% work disability for > 2 years).rESULTS Prevalence of work disability was higher in Crohn's disease(CD)(29%) and ulcerative colitis(UC)(19%) patients compared to the general Dutch population(7%). In all IBD patients, female sex, a lower education level, and extra-intestinal manifestations, were associated with work disability. In CD patients, an age > 40 years at diagnosis, disease duration > 15 years,smoking, surgical interventions, and anti-TNFα use were associated with work disability. In UC patients, an age > 55 years, and immunomodulator use were associated with work disability. In CD patients, a lower education level(Or = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.02-2.58), and in UC patients, disease complications(Or = 3.39, 95%CI: 1.09-10.58) were associated with long-term full work *** The prevalence of work disability in IBD patients is higher than in the general Dutch population. Early assessment of risk factors for work disability is necessary, as work disability is substantial among IBD patients.
