Antimicrobial agents such as bavistin, cefotaxime and kanamycin were evaluated for their effects on the rapid shoot regeneration from nodal explants of Centella asiatica (L.). Filter sterilized bavistin (250 mg/L) was augmented alone and in combination with cytokinins such as BAP and TDZ into the media to trace the effect on regeneration. On this basis, the potential use of bavistin (150 mg/L) along with BAP (2.0 mg/L) was evaluated which showed the maximum shoot number (6.6) and shoot length (4.4 cm) respectively. Cefotaxime at the concentration of 100 μM/L was found to be effective to obtain the maximum shoot number formation (5.8) with the regeneration frequency (90%). Kanamycin at the concentration of 80 μM/L induced maximum shoot regeneration (5.12). Kanamycin at 100 μM/L or at higher concentrations reduced the shoot regeneration. The best rooting response was noticed when in vitro regenerated microshoots were transferred to the rooting medim which was supplemented with IBA (2.0 mg/L). This combination generates 90% of regeneration frequency and maximum number of roots per shoot (14.2) and high root length (4.2 cm). The rooted plants were acclimatized and transferred to field for survivalance. The addition of antibiotics was found to be more effective and safer for using since their effects on regeneration were found to be negligible.

In this present study, the effect of various carbon sources such as sucrose, glucose, fructose and maltose was investigated on in vitro shoot regeneration of Solanum viarum using axillary bud explants. The frequency, growth and multiplication rate were highly influenced by the type and concentration of carbon source used. Among the different concentrations (1%-6%) of carbohydrates studied, the maximum number of shoots (22.6 ± 0.50) and shoot length (5.92 ± 0.13 cm) was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 4% (w/v) fructose. The least number of shoots (1.5 ± 0.32) was obtained on 6% maltose and the least shoot length (1.2 ± 0.23) was observed on 6% glucose. Among the four types of carbon sources that were employed in the present study, fructose at 4% proved to be better choice for multiple shoot regeneration followed by sucrose, glucose and maltose from axillary bud explants of S. viarum.

The effects of bavistin, cefotoxime and kanamycin along with the ethylene inhibitor silver thiosulphate on in vitro regeneration using the axillary buds of Solanum viarum (D.) have been investigated. Axillary bud explants when cultured on MS medium supplemented with bavistin (100 mg/l) maximum number of shoots (4.21 ± 0.83) were observed. In a separate experiment, bavistin along with growth regulators such as BAP and TDZ was added to MS medium containing sucrose (3%). Maximum number of shoots was obtained (5.55 ± 0.28) in MS medium supplemented with bavistin (100 mg/l) and BAP (2.0 mg/l). Cefotoxime and kanamycin (10-150 μM/L) were added to MS medium supplemented with BAP (2.0 mg/l) with sucrose (3%) having shown the maximum shoot regeneration (4.38 ± 0.45 and 3.4 ± 0.48) at 80 μM/L and 50 μM/L respectively. Similarly the regeneration medium was supplemented with (5.0-100 μM/L) of STS. Maximum number of shoots (4.75 ± 0.43) was seen with 40 μM/L. These plantlets were further maintained for root emergence on a rooting medium supplemented with growth regulators such as (0.5-2.0 mg/l) IAA, IBA and NAA. In MS medium supplemented with IBA (1.0 mg/l), maximum number of roots (24.3 ± 0.31) was seen with 100% regeneration. The rooted plants were acclimatized and transferred to field plots with (95%) of plant surviving in the field.

rong>Introduction:rong> Gender differences are still quite prevalent in the present time. Although there is literature regarding gender differences in healthcare expenditure in India, there is no data regarding gender differences in hospital stay, hospital seeking behaviors and mortality. rong>Aim:rong> To evaluate the Gender differences in a hospital seeking behavior, mortality and hospital stay. rong>Methods:rong> We prospectively analyzed, from a retrospective database, all patients who underwent surgical gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary, pancreatic and splenic surgeries from 1996 to 2018 in our unit. Patients were divided into groups based on gender, admission time period and priority of admission i.e., elective or emergency. Both the gender groups were compared with respect to total procedures done, hospital stay and mortality. Organ specific mortality was calculated as proportions, was analyzed and compared between the groups. Time trends of the same were observed and compared. rong>results:rong> Of 12,411 patients, 7979 (64.3%) were males and 4432 (35.7%) were females. 9191 (74.1%) patients underwent elective procedures whereas 3220 (25.9%) had emergency procedures (rong>p ≤ 0.001rong>). Overall mortality was higher in males (n = 473, 5.92%) in comparison to females (n = 185, 4.17%) (p ≤ 0.001). Majority of surgeries in males were of small intestine (22.5%) in which small bowel resection was most commonly done (5.4%), whereas, gallbladder and biliary surgeries (27.4%) were the most common in females in which laparoscopic cholecystectomy was most commonly done (5.8%). Median hospital stay was higher in males (10 days vs 9 days), (rong>p ≤ 0.001rong>). Mortality was higher in females in all organ categories except in liver (6.34% vs 2.7%), pancreas (37.3% Vs 18.3%) and spleen (3.38% Vs 1.62%) where mortality was higher for male gender. Present paper reports on luminescence characteristics of individually doped Bi3+: PZL, Sm3+: PZL and co-doped (Bi3+/Sm3+): PZL (50P2O5-30ZnO-20LiF) glasses prepared by a melt quenching method. The results revealed that Bi3+: PZL glass exhibited a broad emission peak at 440 nm (3P1→1S0) under excitation wavelength 300 nm (1S0→3P1). Sm3+: PZL doped glass has shown a prominent orange emission at 601 nm (4G5/2→6H7/2) with an excitation wavelength 403 nm (6H5/2→4F7/2). Later on Bi3+ is added to Sm3+: PZL glass by increasing its concentrations from 0.1 - 1.5 mol%. By co-doping Bi3+ to Sm3+: PZL glass, Sm3+ emission intensity has been considerably enhanced till 1.0 mol% due to energy transfer from Bi3+ to Sm3+ and when its concentration exceeds this critical value (1.0 mol%) there has been a drastic decrease in Sm3+ emission which is explained accordingly from photoluminescence spectra, energy level diagram and lifetime measurements.

AIM: To determine whether retinal circulatory changes play a role in the pathogenesis of macular disorders in patients who are otherwise healthy. METHODS: Patients with macular disorders that required angiographic imaging were included in this prospective case series. After a complete ocular exam,fluorescein angiography was performed using a standardized technique on the HrA-II(Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) with special focus on the posterior pole. Only patients with good quality images were included in the analysis. Circulatory parameters recorded included the arm-choroid time,choroid-retinal artery, and finally the retinal artery-vein time. Zonal asymmetry(between the upper and lower zones divided by a line passing through the centre of the fovea) in transit times, if any was also noted. Appropriate statistical analysis was done. Circulation times were compared with age matched historical controls. Changes in retinal dye transit times relative to historical age matched controls, if any, were noted and compared between various ***: A total of 156 eyes of 156 patients(120 males)were included in the study. Mean age: 49.14 ±14.93 *** disorders studied were age related degeneration,polypoidal vasculopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCr) and parafoveal telangiectasia. Delayed circulation time was noted in CSCr patients ***: CSCr patients appear to have delayed arterial filling, retinal circulatory disturbances do not seem to contribute to the pathogenesis of other macular disorders.

The United States continues to be the largest corn producer in the world. How to maximize corn yield and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is becoming a challenging effort for growers and researchers. As a result, our understanding of the responses of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes to agricultural practices in cornfields is still limited. We conducted a 3-yr cornfield experiment to study the responses of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes to various agricultural practices in middle Tennessee. The agricultural practices included no-tillage + regular applications of urea ammonium nitrate (NT-UrAN);no-tillage + regular applications of UrAN + denitrification inhibitor (NT-inhi- bitor);no-tillage + regular applications of UrAN + biochar (NT-biochar);no-tillage + 20% applications of UrAN + chicken litter (NT-litter);no-tillage + split applications of UrAN (NT-split);and conventional tillage + regular applications of UrAN as a control (CT-UrAN). A randomized complete block design was used with six replications. The same amount of fertilizer equivalent to 217 kg·N·ha-1 was applied to all of the experimental plots. The results showed that improved fertilizer and soil management, except the NT-biochar treatment significantly increased soil CO2 flux as compared to the conventional tillage (CT-UrAN, 487.05 mg CO2 m-2·h-1). Soil CO2 flux increased exponentially with soil temperature (T 2 flux tended to be positively related to corn yield and/or soil moisture. Soil CH4 flux increased linearly with soil moisture in all treatments. Improved fertilizer and soil management did not alter soil CH4 flux, but significantly affected its moisture sensitivity. Our results indicated that agricultural practices enhancing corn yield may also result in a net increase in carbon emissions from soil, hence reducing the potential of carbon sequestration in croplands.

AIMTo determine the risk factors for acute endophthalmitis after cataract extraction in a tertiary care centre in *** performed a nested case control study within a retrospective cohort. The surgical records of all patients with clinically diagnosed endophthalmitis within one month after cataract surgery, performed between January 2006 and December 2009, were reviewed. These were compared with randomly selected age and gender-matched controls, from patients having routine cataract surgery within ±1wk of the endophthalmitis case. Univariable and multivariable analysis were performed to identify risk factors for *** the total 33 856 cataract surgeries performed during this period, there were 57 cases of postoperative acute endophthalmitis that met our study criteria. Thus, the overall incidence of endophthalmitis in our cohort was 1.6 per 1000 cataract extractions performed. Mean age of cases was 55.9y (SD: 10.9y) and for controls was 55.6y (SD: 9.8y). Thirty-five cases (61.4%) and 133 controls (59.6%) were males. Median time of onset of endophthalmitis was 4d (IQr 2-9d; range: 1-30d). Thirty-nine cases (68.4%) presented within 7d and 27 cases (47.4%) were culture positive. Two hundred and twenty-three age and gender matched controls were selected. In multivariate analysis, endophthalmitis was associated with posterior capsular rupture (PCr) during surgery (Or 6.98, 95%CI: 2.22-21.98), phacoemulsification via scleral incision with a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (Or 3.02, 95%CI: 1.13-8.04) and ocular co-morbidity (Or 2.32, 95%CI: 1.11-4.87).CONCLUSIONPCr, presence of ocular co-morbidity, and phacoemulsification via scleral incision with foldable-IOL were found to be independent risk factors for acute endophthalmitis.

A simple commercial graphite pencil electrode was used to investigate the electrochemical oxidation of dopamine. The electropolymerised film of eriochrome black t was prepared on the surface of graphite pencil electrode by using cyclic voltammetry technique. The prepared electrode exhibits an excellent electrocatalytical activity towards the determination of dopamine. The effects of concentration, pH and scan rate were investigated. Simultaneous detection of dopamine and uric acid was investigated by using both cyclic voltammetric and differential pulse voltammetry technique. The modified electrode was also used for the detection of dopamine in injection.
