Evolutionary fingerprint, phylogenetic and forest structure of tropical montane Atlantic cloud forests along an elevation gradient

Environmental conditions can change markedly over geographical distances along elevation gradients,making them natural laboratories to study the processes that structure *** work aimed to assess the influences of elevation on Tropical Montane Cloud Forest plant communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest,a historically neglected *** evaluated the phylogenetic structure,forest structure(tree basal area and tree density)and species richness along an elevation gradient,as well as the evolutionary fingerprints of elevation-success on phylogenetic lineages from the tree *** do so,we assessed nine communities along an elevation gradient from 1210 to 2310 m *** large elevation *** relationships between elevation and phylogenetic structure,forest structure and species richness were investigated through Linear *** occurrence of evolutionary fingerprint on phylogenetic lineages was investigated by quantifying the extent of phylogenetic signal of elevation-success using a genus-level molecular *** results showed decreased species richness at higher elevations and independence between forest structure,phylogenetic structure and *** also verified that there is a phylogenetic signal associated with elevation-success by *** concluded that the elevation is associated with species richness and the occurrence of phylogenetic lineages in the tree communities evaluated in Mantiqueira *** the other hand,elevation is not associated with forest structure or phylogenetic ***,closely related taxa tend to have their higher ecological success in similar ***,we highlight the fragility of the tropical montane cloud forests in the Mantiqueira range in face of environmental changes(*** warming)due to the occurrence of exclusive phylogenetic lineages evolutionarily adapted to environmental conditions(*** temperature)associated with each elevation range.

Can small-scale altitudinal gradients predict spatial and temporal patterns in tropical forests?

In tropical montane forests,compositional and structural changes are commonly driven by broad-scale altitudinal ***,given the lack of knowledge on small-scale vegetation changes and temporal dynamics,we address the effects of small-scale variations in soil and altitude on tree community structure,temporal dynamics and phylogenetic diversity in a semi-deciduous tropical forest of the Atlantic Forest Domain,southeastern *** 2010 and 2015 we sampled thirty plots of 400 m^(2),set up along an altitudinal gradient between 1000 and 1500 m a.s.I..In each plot,we collected soil samples for chemical and textural *** fitted linear models to test the effects of altitude and soil on community dynamics and phylogenetic *** and soil explained the spatial variation in number of individuals and phylogenetic diversity *** lower to higher altitudes,we found decreasing fertility,increasing tree density and decreasing phylogenetic *** significantly influenced the increases in total biomass(from 240.9 to 255.4 t ha^(-1))and individual biomass(from 0.15 to 0.17 t)recorded in the *** while community temporal dynamics had rates of 1.96%for mortality,1.02%for recruitment,1.61%for biomass loss and 2.81%for biomass gain,none of them were explained by altitude or *** species substitution averaged0.1 in the ***,these results suggest that the small-scale variations in altitude and soil likely determine the conditions and resources that drive community assembly and structure,which are expressed by spatial variations along the altitudinal *** the same time,temporal patterns were not influenced by altitude-related environmental variation,resulting in a similar dynamic behaviour across the gradient,suggesting that broad-scale factors may play a more important role than local ones.

Small-scale edaphic heterogeneity as a floristic-structural complexity driver in Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests tree communities

Our work aimed to test the hypothesis that soil microscale heterogeneity act as a community ecological driver,increasing diversity and promoting structural shifts on the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest(SDTF)tree *** evaluated the relationship between microscale edaphic variations and floristic–structural patterns of tree communities in a SDTF fragment located in the southern end of the Brazilian Caatinga *** and soil data were obtained through 27 sample units of 400 m2(20 m 920 m),within each one we measured and identified at species level all arboreal individuals with Circumference at the Breast Height greater or equal to 10 cm,and also collected the soil *** the data we evaluated soil variation influence on the tree community structural and floristic patterns trough generalized linear *** explained the small-scale structural and floristic variations,contributing significantly to biomass,sprouting and to floristic relationships between sample *** was also observed a possible relation of the result with the Caatinga domain biogeographic history,due the presence of Sedimentary Caatinga species,which are not expected for the study *** plays an important role in driving small-scale complexity and diversity of SDTF,but we also suggest that Caatinga biogeographic events have influence on the high heterogeneity patterns.

Shifts in hydrological regimes alter river flow rates and flood pulses, decrease environmental heterogeneity and the floristic-structural complexity of associated plant communities. We tested the hypothesis that drought events affect plant community composition and structure at a small-scale within a riparian fragment towards a reduction in floristic-structural complexity. The tree community was sampled in three habitats (wet, transitional and dry) and monitored in seven inventories carried out between 1991 and 2018. Hydrological variations were evaluated through annual rainfalls, river flow rates and water level data. The species richness and the detrended correspondence analysis axes were used to characterise the temporal modifications in floristic composition. Community structure was described in terms of biomass: accumulated, growth of survivors, mortality and recruitment. Generalised linear mixed models were fitted to evaluate the effects of time and environment in community. It was concluded that the climate has become drier in recent years due to declining precipitation that has affected flow rates and water levels. The floristic-structural complexity of the study fragment was maintained during the monitoring period. However, prolonged and extreme drought events displayed the potential to impact floristic-structural patterns.

The biology of a koinobiont parasitoid of leaf-cutting ant larvae, Szelenyiopria talitae (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), was studied from naturally infested Acromyrmex subterraneus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) nests. Nests were collected in the field from the Atlantic rainforest biome in the state of rio de Janeiro. A total of fifty-three nests were collected from 2015 to 2018. Parasitized nests were only found during the months of September and October. Approximately 22% of the nests collected over a four-year period were found to have been parasitized by S. talitae. The mean within-nest parasitism rate was 66.3%. This diapriid displayed both solitary (14%) and gregarious parasitism (86%), with up to a maximum of 12 parasitoids developing within a single host. Gregarious parasitism with two (29%) or three (21%) S. talitae per host was most frequently observed. There was a positive correlation between the number of parasitoids per host and host size (dry weight), indicating that S. talitae females oviposited a higher number of eggs in larger hosts. Aims We aimed at disentangling the effects of spatial distance,current and past environmental dissimilarity,and their combinations on tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover by addressing the following questions:(i)Is tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover related to the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity?(ii)Does tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover respond to paleoclimate(Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene)?Methods The study was carried out in 14 Atlantic rainforest sites in Brazil(20.4 ha sampled)containing 615 tree species from 83 plant *** obtained plot-level geographic coordinates and soil variables and site-level bioclimatic variables in the current,Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial *** used structural equation models with a distance-based approach to(i)test the direct effects of spatial distance and environmental dissimilarity and(ii)test the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic(Bray–Curtis distance)and phylogenetic turnover(Comdist and Comdistnt distances).Important Findings Our results suggest a weak indirect effect of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic and phylogenetic *** community turnover was driven by the direct effects of neutral,niche-based and historical ***,we inferred that the paleoclimate(historical processes)promoted the selection of the clades that gave rise to the current flora,while spatial distances(neutral processes)limited the dispersal range of species from the regional pool and environmental conditions(niche-based processes)locally selected the taxa that are able to persist.

Purpose To complement and ensure redundancy in the endcap muon system of the Compact Muon Solenoid(CMS)detector and to extend the resistive Plate Chamber(rPC)system coverage,improved rPCs(irPCs)with either orthogonal layer strips with one-end electronics or single layer strips with two-end electronics providing more precise time measurement will be installed in the very forward pseudorapidity region of|η|rPC readout system needs to support twodimensional(2D)or two-end *** addition,it must combine detector data with Timing,Trigger and fast Control(TTC)and Slow Control(SC)into one data stream over a bi-directional optical link with a line rate of 4.8 Gb/s between the Front-End Electronics(FEE)and the Back-End Electronics(BEE).To fulfill these requirements,a prototype BEE for the irPC 2D chamber has been researched and *** A Micro-Telecommunication and Computing Architecture(μTCA)-based processing card was designed in this study to establish a prototype system together with aμTCA *** Giga-Bit Transceiver(GBT)protocol is integrated to provide bi-directional communication between the FEE and BEE.A server is connected with the BEE by a Gigabit Ethernet(GbE)link for SC and a 10-GbE link for Data AcQuisition(DAQ).results The Bit Error rate(ber)test of the back-end board and a joint test with the irPC 2D prototype chamber were *** less than 1.331×10−16 was *** timemeasurement with a resolution of 3.05 nswas successfully realized,and detector efficiencies of 97.7%for longitudinal strips and 96.0%for orthogonal strips were *** results demonstrate the correctness and reliability of the prototype *** The BEE prototype satisfies the requirements for the irPC 2D chamber,and it worked stably and reliably during a long-term joint test run.
