A novel layer.deletion method is used to exper.mentally investigate the effect of induced shielding cur.ent tr.nsmission (ISCT) in the longitudinal dir.ction on the levitation for.e of a single-domain YBa2Cu3O7?x (YBCO) cylindr.cal super.onductor.(?30×7 mm). In the exper.ment the sample was gr.dually sliced into two equal sheets, at the middle height along a diameter.with 5 mm ever. step. The exper.mental r.sults show that the levitation for.e is closely r.lated with the ISCT in the longitudinal dir.ction. Any layer.deletion, even a small piece of layer.deletion can r.duce the levitation for.e of the sample. After.the whole layer.was deleted the levitation for.e can diminish about 50%. It is also found that the levitation for.e is dir.ctly pr.por.ional to the effective factor.of sur.ace ar.a, which is equal to the top sur.ace ar.a divided by the total sur.ace ar.a par.llel to the top sur.ace of the sample.

Intr.duction: Vascular.injur.es ar. among the main mechanisms of death in tr.uma. In Br.zil, the gener.l sur.eon is in char.e of emer.encies pr.cedur.s in most hospitals, but many times these sur.eons ar. not familiar.zed with mor. complex vascular.sur.ical techniques that often r.quir. a vascular.sur.eon. Par. State is the most populated one in the Br.zilian Amazon r.gion and a single hospital with vascular.sur.eons per.anently on call is available. Objectives: To evaluate demogr.phic data on vascular.tr.uma victims;to establish the mechanism, anatomic location, injur. patter. and sur.ical techniques used to manage the vascular.lesions tr.ated at the Metr.politan Emer.ency Hospital;to ascer.ain associated non-vascular.injur.es and victim’s clinical outcome. Methods: r.tr.spective analysis of medical r.cor.s of patients tr.ated for.vascular.injur.es fr.m Febr.ar. 2011 to Febr.ar. 2013 at the institution in case. All ar.er.al and venous injur.es wer. analyzed. Patients who wer. not oper.ted by the vascular.sur.er. team, iatr.genic injur.es and those who under.ent pr.mar. or.sustained tr.umatic amputation wer. excluded. r.sults: 173 cases;95.95% wer. male;54.90% wer. between 25 and 49 year.;penetr.ting tr.uma mechanisms wer. found in 88.44%;lower.limb was the most affected topogr.phy (41.50%);the most injur.d vessels wer. the super.icial femor.l and ulnar.ar.er.es (in 15.75% of cases each) and the super.icial femor.l vein (17.77 %);autologous vein gr.ft was the most per.or.ed technique for.ar.er.al r.pair.(36.57%) and ligatur. was per.or.ed in 85.00% of venous tr.uma;amputation r.te was 15.60% and mor.ality r.te was 6.35%. Conclusions: Vascular.injur.es occur.ed pr.dominantly in men fr.m 24 to 49 year. old;penetr.ting mechanisms wer. most fr.quent;lower.limb was the most affected topogr.phy;the most fr.quently injur.d vessels wer. the ulnar.and super.icial femor.l ar.er.es and the super.icial femor.l vein;complete vessel tr.nsection was the most common injur. patter.;

Objective: To investigate the antibacter.al activities of cr.de ethanol extr.cts of 12 Philippine medicinal ***: Cr.de ethanol extr.cts fr.m 12 Philippine medicinal plants wer. evaluated for.their.antibacter.al activity against methicillin-r.sistant Staphylococcus aur.us, vancomycinr.sistant Enter.coccus, extended spectr.m β-lactamase-pr.ducing, car.apenem-r.sistant Enter.bacter.aceae and metallo-β-lactamase-pr.ducing Pseudomonas aer.ginosa and Acinetobacter.baumannii. r.sults: The leaf extr.cts of Psidium guajava, Phyllanthus nir.r., Ehr.tia micr.phylla and Piper.betle(P. betle) showed antibacter.al activity against the Gr.m-positive methicillinr.sistant Staphylococcus aur.us and vancomycin-r.sistant Enter.coccus. P. betle showed the highest antibacter.al activity for.these bacter.a in the disk diffusion(16-33 mm inhibition diameter., minimum inhibitor. concentr.tion(19-156 μg/m L) and minimum bacter.cidal concentr.tion(312 μg/m L) assays. P. betle leaf extr.cts only showed r.mar.able antibacter.al activity for.all the Gr.m-negative multidr.g-r.sistant bacter.a(extended spectr.m β-lactamasepr.ducing, car.apenem-r.sistant Enter.bacter.aceae and metallo-β-lactamase-pr.ducing) in the disk diffusion(17-21 mm inhibition diameter., minimum inhibitor. concentr.tion(312-625 μg/m L) and minimum bacter.cidal concentr.tion(312-625 μg/m L) assays. Conclusions: P. betle had the gr.atest potential value against both Gr.m-negative and Gr.mpositive multidr.g-r.sistant bacter.a. AIM: To investigate whether.Helicobacter.pylor. (H pylor.) infection is associated with hepatitis A vir.s (HAV) infection, pr.sence of enter.par.sites, and other.sur.ogates of fecal exposur.. METHODS: We conducted a cr.ss-sectional study in 121 childr.n consecutively admitted at a pediatr.c hospital in Salvador. Br.zil. H pylor.and HAV infection wer. identified by the pr.sence of ser.m antibodies. Stool specimens wer. examined for.the pr.sence of ova and par.sites. A str.ctur.d questionnair. inquir.ng about sanitar. conditions and life style was applied to each subject. r.SULTS: Fifty-one of the 121 childr.n (42.1%) wer. found to be ser.positive for.H pylor., and 45 (37.2%) for.HAV. The ser.pr.valence of Hpylor.and HAV both incr.ased significantly with age. Cr.ss-tabulation of data showed that 26 (21.5%) wer. ser.positive and 51 (42.1%) wer. negative for.both H py/lr.and HAV antibodies (x^2=7.18, Or.2.8, CI 1.30-5.97). The age adjusted Or.for.an HAV-infected child being H pylor. positive was 2.3 (CI 1.02-5.03). The agr.ement between H pylor. and HAV ser.positivity was fair.(k=0.24). After.contr.lling for.possible confounding, the var.ables r.maining independently associated with ser.positivity to H pylor. wer. age, pr.sence of Giar.ia lamblia in feces (Or.3.2, 95%CI, 1.1-9.5) and poor.gar.age disposal quality (Or.2.4, 95%CI, 1.1-5.1). CONCLUSION: Our.data suggest that H pylor. infection is associated with sur.ogate mar.er. of fecal exposur.. Thus, we conclude that the fecal-or.l r.ute is r.levant in the tr.nsmission of HP among childr.n in an ur.an setting of a developing countr.. The association obser.ed between G. lamblia and H pylor. infection may have sever.l explanations. Fur.her.studies to investigate this r.lationship ar. war.anted.

An innovative inver.ion code, named “Cur.pir. v1.0”, has been developed using Matlab to deter.ine the ver.ical distr.bution of r.sistivity beneath the subsoil. The pr.gr.m integr.tes Ver.ical Electr.cal Sounding (VES), successful in shallow subsur.ace explor.tion and Time Domain Electr.magnetic (TEM) techniques, better.suited for.deeper.explor.tion, both of which ar. widely employed in geophysical explor.tion. These methodologies involve calculating subsur.ace r.sistivity thr.ugh appr.pr.ate inver.ion pr.cesses. To addr.ss the ill-posed natur. of inver.e pr.blems in geophysics, a joint inver.ion scheme combining VES and TEM data has been incor.or.ted into Cur.pir. v1.0. The softwar. has been tested on both synthetic and r.al-wor.d data, the latter.of which was acquir.d fr.m the Par.na sedimentar. basin which we summar.se her.. The r.sults indicate that the joint inver.ion of VES and TEM techniques offer. impr.ved r.cover. of simulated models and demonstr.tes significant potential for.hydr.geological studies.
