Causes of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia: a multicenter study of three regions in China

Background Available evidence suggests that our country bear great burden of severe hyperbilirubinemia.However,the causes have not been explored recently in different regions of China to guide necessary clinical and public health interventions.Methods This was a prospective,observational study conducted from March 1,2018,to February 28,2019.Four hospitals in three regions of China participated in the survey.Data from infants with a gestational age≥35 weeks,birth weight>2000 g,and total serum bilirubin(TSB)level≥17 mg/dL(342μmol/L)were prospectively collected.Results A total of 783 cases were reported.Causes were identified in 259 cases.The major causes were ABO incompatibility(n=101),glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency(n=76),and intracranial hemorrhage(n=70).All infants with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency were from the central south region.Those from the central south region had much higher peak total bilirubin levels[mean,404μmol/L;standard deviation(SD),75μmol/L]than those from the other regions(mean,373μmol/L;SD,35μmol/L)(P<0.001).Conclusions ABO incompatibility was the leading cause in the east and northwest regions,but cases in the central south region were mainly caused by both ABO incompatibility and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency,and infants in this region had a much higher peak total bilirubin level.Intracranial hemorrhage may be another common cause.More thorough assessments and rigorous bilirubin follow-up strategies are needed in the central south region.

The data and characteristics of the human milk banks in China's Mainland

Background Human milk banks (HMB) have been established for over 100 years in North America and Europe.This study aimed to describe and summarize the operation and characteristics of the HMBs in China's Mainland since the first nonprofit HMB operated in 2013.Methods Operation of HMB in China's Mainland is based on the standards and guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America and some countries in Europe and was modified to meet the needs and circumstances in China such as donation only in the local HMB by medical staff.We reviewed the descriptive data of these 14 HMBs and the clinical characteristics of recipients,the eligible milk donors and the donor milk retrospectively.Results In China's Mainland,from March 2013 to December 2016,14 nonprofit HMBs were developed and operational in public hospitals except one and located in the south,east,north and northwest of China's Mainland.In total,2680 eligible donors donated 4608.2 L of breast milk.The mean age of these donors was 29.4 years with 60.6% receiving college education and 90.6% term delivery.A total of 4678 recipients including preterm infants (n =2990,63.9%),feeding intolerance (n =711,15.2%),maternal illness (n =345,7.4%),serious infection (n =314,6.7%),necrotising enterocolitis (n =244,5.2%),post-surgery (n =38,0.8%) and others (n =36,0.8%).The rate of discarded raw milk was only 4.4% because of hepatitis B and C or cytomegalovirus positivity.Conclusions HMB has been developing rapidly in China's Mainland.Donor human milk was used not only for preterm infants but also for other ill children.But the sustainability of milk banking needs proper management and more financial support by relative health authorities and the government.

Background： With the progress ofperinatal medicine and neonatal technology, more and more extremely low birth weight （ELBW） survived all over the world. This study was designed to investigate the short-term ontcomes of ELBW infants during their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit （NICU） stay in the mainland of China. Methods： All infants admitted to 26 NICUs with a birth weight （BW）〈1000 g were included between January 1,2011 and December 31,2011. All the data were collected retrospectively from clinical records by a prospectively designed questionnaire. The data collected from each NICU transmitted to the main institution where the results were aggregated and analyzed. Categorical variables were performed with Pearson Chi-square test. Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to detect risk factors. Results： A total of 258 ELBW infants were admitted to 26 NICUs, of whom the mean gestational age （GA） was 28.1 ± 2.2 weeks, and the mean BW was 868 ± 97 g. The overall survival rate at discharge was 50.0%. Despite aggressive treatment 60 infants （23.3%） died and another 69 infants （26.7%） died after medical care withdrawal. Furthermore, the survival rate was significantly higher in coastal areas than inland areas （53.6% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.019）. BW 〈750 g and GA 〈28 weeks were the largest risk factors, and being small for gestational age was a protective factor related to mortality. Respiratory distress syndrome was the most common complication. The incidence of patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity was 26.2%, 33.7%, 6.7%, 48.1%, and 41.4%, respectively. Ventilator associated pneumonia was the most common hospital acquired infection during hospitalization. Conclusions： Our study was the first survey that revealed the present status of ELBW infants in the mainland of China. The mortality and morbidity of ELBW infants remained high as compared to other developed countries.

The dawn−dusk asymmetry in mesosphere and lower thermosphere temperature disturbances during geomagnetic storms at high latitude

Utilizing observations by the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry(SABER)instrument,we quantitatively assessed the dawn-dusk asymmetry in temperature disturbances within the high-latitude mesosphere and lower thermosphere(MLT)during the main phase of geomagnetic storms in this study.An analysis of five geomagnetic superstorm events indicated that during the main phase,negative temperature disturbances were more prevalent on the dawn side than on the dusk side in the high-latitude MLT region.Results of a statistical analysis of 54 geomagnetic storm events also revealed a notable disparity in temperature disturbances between the dawn and dusk sides.At high latitudes,38.2%of the observational points on the dawn side exhibited negative temperature disturbances(less than−5 K),whereas on the dusk side,this percentage was only 29.5%.In contrast,at mid-latitudes,these proportions were 34.1%and 36.5%,respectively,showing no significant difference.We also conducted a statistical analysis of temperature disturbances at different altitudes,which revealed an increase in the proportion of warming disturbances with altitude.Conversely,the proportion of cooling disturbances initially rose with altitude,reaching a peak around 105 km,and subsequently decreased.These temperature disturbance differences could be explained by the day-night asymmetry in vertical wind disturbances during storm conditions.

Microstructure and mechanical properties stability of pre-hardening treatment in Al-Cu alloys for pre-hardening forming process

The stability of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pre-hardened sheets during the pre-hardening forming(PHF)process directly determines the quality of the formed components.The microstructure stability of the pre-hardened sheets was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),while the mechanical properties and formability were analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests and formability tests.The results in-dicate that the mechanical properties of the pre-hardened alloys exhibited negligible changes after experiencing 1-month natural aging(NA).The deviations of ultimate tensile strength(UTS),yield strength(YS),and sheet formability(Erichsen value)are all less than 2%.Also,after different NA time(from 48 h to 1 month)is applied to alloys before pre-hardening treatment,the pre-hardened alloys possess stable microstructure and mechanical properties as well.Interestingly,with the extension of NA time before pre-hardening treatment from 48 h to 1 month,the contribution of NA to the pre-hardening treatment is limited.Only a yield strength increment of 20 MPa is achieved,with no loss in elongation.The limited enhancement is mainly attributed to the fact that only a limited number of clusters are transformed into Guinier-Preston(GP)zones at the early stage of pre-hardening treatment,and the formation ofθ''phase inhibits the nucleation and growth of GP zones as the precipitated phase evolves.

Role of ferroptosis in fibrosis: From mechanism to potential therapy

Fibrosis, which is a manifestation of the physiological response to injury characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix components, is a ubiquitous outcome of the repair process. However, in cases of repetitive or severe injury, fibrosis may become dysregulated, leading to a pathological state and organ failure. In recent years, a novel form of regulated cell death, referred to as ferroptosis, has been identified as a possible contributor to fibrosis; it is characterized by iron-mediated lipid peroxidation. It has garnered attention due to the growing body of evidence linking ferroptosis and fibrogenesis, which is believed to be driven by underlying inflammation and immune responses. Despite the increasing interest in the relationship between ferroptosis and fibrosis, a comprehensive understanding of the precise role that ferroptosis plays in the formation of fibrotic tissue remains limited. This review seeks to synthesize previous research related to the topic. We categorized the different direct and indirect mechanisms by which ferroptosis may contribute to fibrosis into three categories: (1) iron overload toxicity; (2) ferroptosis-evoked necroinflammation, with a focus on ferroptosis and macrophage interplay; and (3) ferroptosis-associated pro-fibrotic factors and pathways. Furthermore, the review considers the potential implications of these findings and highlights the utilization of ferroptosis-targeted therapies as a promising strategy for mitigating the progression of fibrosis. In conclusion, novel anti-fibrotic treatments targeting ferroptosis could be an effective treatment for fibrosis.

An Efficient Local Radial Basis Function Method for Image Segmentation Based on the Chan-Vese Model

In this paper,we consider the Chan–Vese(C-V)model for image segmentation and obtain its numerical solution accurately and efficiently.For this purpose,we present a local radial basis function method based on a Gaussian kernel(GA-LRBF)for spatial discretization.Compared to the standard radial basis functionmethod,this approach consumes less CPU time and maintains good stability because it uses only a small subset of points in the whole computational domain.Additionally,since the Gaussian function has the property of dimensional separation,the GA-LRBF method is suitable for dealing with isotropic images.Finally,a numerical scheme that couples GA-LRBF with the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method is applied to the C-V model,and a comparison of some numerical results demonstrates that this scheme achieves much more reliable image segmentation.

Analysis of China's Electricity Price and Electricity Burden of Basic Industries under the Carbon Peak Target before 2030

The Chinese government is deepening reformation of electricity prices during the 14th Five Year Plan period and has set a carbon emission reduction target of reaching carbon peak before 2030.In this context,will the carbon emission target influence electricity pricing and will electricity price influence competitiveness of Chinese main industries are two questions needing to be answered.This paper compares China's electricity price level with the selected major countries in the world,and four typical industries are selected to evaluate their electricity burden respectively.Then,the correlation between residential electricity price and industrial electricity price and the influencing factors is analyzed,from the perspectives of scale,structure and technology.According to the model obtained by regression analysis,the electricity price level and corresponding residential and industrial electricity burden in 2025 and 2030 are forecasted.Index Terms-Electricity burden,industrial electricity price,regression analysis,residential electricity price.

ZIF-8 modified by isocyanate as a photocatalytic antibacterial agent

Zeolite imidazole skeleton（ZIF-8） is a promising option for self-cleaning of building exterior walls due to its large specific surface area,high antibacterial activity and low biotoxicity.However,it suffers from low antibacterial efficiency and yield under visible light irradiation.To address the issues,we developed the photocatalytic materials T-ZIF-8-TDI（thermally treated-ZIF-8-toluene 2,4-diisocyanate） by modifying ZIF-8 with thermal oxygen sensitization and chemical bonding.The results show that the yield of T-ZIF-8-TDI photocatalytic antibacterial agent is increased to 11.5 times of that of T-ZIF-8,while maintaining the crystal structure of T-ZIF-8 and thermal stability up to 60℃.Furthermore,T-ZIF-8-TDI exhibits extended optical response range to the nearinfrared region,significantly narrowed band gap,improved photogenerated elec tron-hole separation efficiency,reduced recombination rate,and excellent photocatalytic performance.When the concentration of antibacterial agent is 600 mg·L-1,the antibacterial rate of Escherichia coli（E.coli） reaches 99.99% irradiated by visible light for30 min,and when the concentration of antibacterial agent is 200 mg·L-1,the antibacterial rate of Staphylococcus aureus（S.aureus） reaches 99.99% irradiated by visible light for 25 min.We also analyzed the reasons in detail from the aspects of bacterial species and antibacterial mechanism,and proposed the antibacterial mechanism of·O2-and h+as the main active species.These findings suggest that T-ZIF-8-TDI photocatalytic antibacterial agent has potential for use in self-cleaning of building exterior walls.

A Local Macroscopic Conservative(LoMaC)Low Rank Tensor Method with the Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Vlasov Dynamics

In this paper,we propose a novel Local Macroscopic Conservative(LoMaC)low rank tensor method with discontinuous Galerkin(DG)discretization for the physical and phase spaces for simulating the Vlasov-Poisson(VP)system.The LoMaC property refers to the exact local conservation of macroscopic mass,momentum,and energy at the discrete level.The recently developed LoMaC low rank tensor algorithm(arXiv:2207.00518)simultaneously evolves the macroscopic conservation laws of mass,momentum,and energy using the kinetic flux vector splitting;then the LoMaC property is realized by projecting the low rank kinetic solution onto a subspace that shares the same macroscopic observables.This paper is a generalization of our previous work,but with DG discretization to take advantage of its compactness and flexibility in handling boundary conditions and its superior accuracy in the long term.The algorithm is developed in a similar fashion as that for a finite difference scheme,by observing that the DG method can be viewed equivalently in a nodal fashion.With the nodal DG method,assuming a tensorized computational grid,one will be able to(i)derive differentiation matrices for different nodal points based on a DG upwind discretization of transport terms,and(ii)define a weighted inner product space based on the nodal DG grid points.The algorithm can be extended to the high dimensional problems by hierarchical Tucker(HT)decomposition of solution tensors and a corresponding conservative projection algorithm.In a similar spirit,the algorithm can be extended to DG methods on nodal points of an unstructured mesh,or to other types of discretization,e.g.,the spectral method in velocity direction.Extensive numerical results are performed to showcase the efficacy of the method.
