Nonculturability of the pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus in live culture of Grateloupia turuturu is associated with bacterial attachment to the algal thalli

The invasive red alga Grateloupia turuturu Yamada could turn Vibrio parahaemolyticus into nonculturable state in live algal *** order to elucidate the mechanism of such an effect,a series of culture experiments were performed in this investigation based on three hypothesized causes,namely bacterial attachment,production of reactive oxygen species （ROS） and the discharge of water soluble secondary metabolic *** results reveal that attachment to the thallus surface of *** was the major reason for the decrease of *** in *** investigations show that *** attachment to the surface of algal thallus in live cultures of seaweeds was a common ***,the disappearance of the culturability of *** occurred only on the thallus of *** over 72 h among all six algal species *** microscopic scanning shows that most of *** attached to *** changed from the initial normal bacilli to coccoid-shape after 72 *** enclosure experiments by enclosing the algal thallus in tubes demonstrate that the nonculturability of *** in the water of live culture of *** occurred after the physical contact of the *** to the *** capacity of *** in affecting the culturability of *** was not influenced after inhibition of photosynthesis by treatment of 3（3,4dichlorophenyl）-1 ,1dimethyl urea （DCMU） at non-lethal *** of reactive oxygen species after addition of live culture of bacteria was excluded by on-line analyzing the oxidation of dichlorohydrofluorescein （DCFH） to dichlorofluorescein （DCF） in the presence of peroxidase on a VersaFluor fluorometer.

Sporopollen analysis of Core B10 in the southern Yellow Sea and the reflected characteristics of climate changes

Eight sporopollen zones have been divided based on the results of high-resolution sporopollen analysis of Core B10 in the southern Yellow Sea. Based on the results along with ^14C datings and the subbottom profiling data,climatic and environmental changes since the last stage of late Pleistocene are discussed. The main conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) the vegetation evolved in the process of coniferous forest-grassland containing broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest→coniferons and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by coniferous trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland containing evergreen broad-leaved trees→coniferons and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by broadleaved trees→deciduous broad-leaved forest-meadow containing evergreen broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest containing evergreen broad-leaved trees; (2) eight stages of climate changes are identified as the cold and dry stage, the temperate and wet stage, the cold and dry stage, the warm and dry stage, the temperate and wet stage, the hot and dry stage, the temperate and dry stage, then the warm and dry stage in turn; (3) the sedimentary environment developed from land,to littoral zone, to land again, then to shore-neritic zone; and (4) the Yellow Sea Warm Current formed during early-Holocene rather than Atlantic stage.

Mineral provinces and material provenance of the surficial sediments near the Zhongsha Islands in the South China Sea

Characteristics and distribution patterns of clastic minerals (0.063～0.125 mm) in bottom sediments represent a significant indicator for the identification of the origin of sediment. One hundred and fourteen surface sediment samples, which were collected from the area near the Zhongsha Islands in the South China Sea, were analysed to identify the mineral suites and their distributions in the study area. The area can be divided into three mineral provinces: (Ⅰ) a province of biogenic minerals, which mainly originate from the Zhongsha Atoll; (Ⅱ) a province of volcanogenic minerals, which are mainly derived from local basaltic seamounts and small-scale volcanoes that are probably erupting, with some influences from the island-arc volcanic region around the South China Sea; and (Ⅲ) a mixed mineral province whose material source includes biogenic minerals, volcanogenic minerals and terrigenous minerals; the last province can be subdivided into a mixed mineral sub-province of the northeastern part of the study area, in which terrigenous minerals are mainly derived from China’s Mainland and do not exceed 17°N, and a mixed mineral sub-province of the southeastern part of the study area, in which terrigenous minerals are derived from Kalimantan and Indochina Peninsula and might be further transported into the deep sea basin through submarine canyons.

Simulating a typhoon storm surge in the East Sea of China using a coupled model

A coupled numerical model with a 20 20 resolution grid has been developed and used to simulate five typical typhoon storm surges(5612,7413,7910,8114,and 9711) in the East Sea of *** main driving forces have been considered in this coupled model:wave radiation stress,combined wave-current bottom shear stress and wave-state-dependent surface wind *** model has then been compared with in situ measurements of the storm *** effect of different driving force components on the total storm surge has also been *** study has found that the coupled model with high resolution is capable of simulating the five typical typhoons better than the uncoupled models,and that the wave-dependent surface wind stress plays an important role in typhoon storm surge-wave coupling in this area and can increase the storm set-up by 1 *** study of the five typhoon cases has shown that the general coupling effects could increase storm set-up by 20-32%.Thus,it is suggested that to predict typhoon storm surges in the East Sea of China,a storm surge-wave coupled model be adopted.

Low-frequency variability of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation in the past 40 years from SODA

The low-frequency variability of the North Equatorial Current （NEC） bifurcation during 1958 to 2001 was investigated with the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation （SODA） 2.0.2 dataset. In agreement with recent observations, the NEC bifurcation latitude （NBL） shifted northward as depth increases, from about 12.7°N near the surface to about 17.1°N at depths around 500 m for the annual average. This study reveals that the interannual variations of NBL, with five years period, mainly focused on the upper 500 m with amplitude increasing as depth increased. The NBL shifted southward in the past 40 years, which was more significant in the subsurface at more than -0.02°/a. The NBL manifests itself in the transports of NMK （NEC-Mindanao Current （MC）-Kuroshio） system in strong relationship with MC （0.7） and Kuroshio （-0.7）. The EOF analysis of meridional velocity off the Philippine coast shows that the first mode, explaining 62% of variance and 5 years period, was highly correlated with the southward shift of NBL with coefficient at about 0.75. The southward shift of NBL consists with the weakening of MC and strengthening of Kuroshio, which exhibited linear trends at -0.24Sv/a and 0.11Sv/a. Both interannual variation and trend of NBL were closely related to the variation of NMK system.

Statistical distribution of nonlinear random wave height

A statistical model of random wave is developed using Stokes wave theory of water wave dynamics. A new nonlinear probability distribution function of wave height is presented. The results indicate that wave steepness not only could be a parameter of the distribution function of wave height but also could reflect the degree of wave height distribution deviation from the Rayleigh distribution. The new wave height distribution overcomes the problem of Rayleigh distribution that the prediction of big wave is overestimated and the general wave is underestimated. The prediction of small probability wave height value of new distribution is also smaller than that of Rayleigh distribution. Wave height data taken from East China Normal University are used to verify the new distribution. The results in- dicate that the new distribution fits the measurements much better than the Rayleigh distribution.

Study on the Role of Tidal Currents in the process of Formation and Development of the Changjiang River Delta

The Changjiang River Delta is a delta of tremendous scale which is formed under the control of tide and tidal currents. The study on the role of tide and tidal currents in the process of formation and development of the Changjiang River Delta can provide a typical example for the ocean-continent interaction process in the east area of our country. The tide and tidal currents in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea at the post-glacial transgression maximum are simulated, the sediment transport field in the Paleo-Changjiang River Estuary(PCRE) and its peripheral area at that time is calculated, and the seabed erosion/accretion pattern is obtained according to the divergence of sediment transport rate. The results show that a distinctive wave belly of standing tidal wave existed at the post-glacial transgression maximum and the wave belly lines protruded seawards from the wave belly point in the mouth of the PCRE. The three-dimensional structure and seasonal variation of the North Pacific meridional overturning circulation

The three-dimensional structure and the seasonal variation of the North Pacific meridional overturning circulation （NPMOC） are analyzed based on the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation data and Argo profiling float data. The NPMOC displays a multi-cell structure with four cells in the North Pacific altogether. The TC and the STC are a strong clockwise meridional cell in the low latitude ocean and a weaker clockwise meridional cell between 7°N and 18°N, respectively, while the DTC and the subpolar cell are a weaker anticlockwise meridional cell between 3°N and 15°N and a weakest anticlockwise meridional cell between 35°N and 50°N, respectively. The DTC, the TC and the STC are all of very strong seasonal variations. As to the DTC, the southward transport is strongest in fall and weakest in spring. For the TC, the northward transport is strongest in winter and weakest in spring, while the southward transport is strongest in fall and weakest in spring, which is associated with the strong southward fiow of the DTC in fall. As the STC, the northward transport is strongest in winter and weakest in summer, while the southward transport is strongest in summer and weakest in spring. This seasonal difference may be associated with the DTC. The zonal wind stress and the east-west slope of sea level play important roles in the seasonal variations of the TC, the STC and the DTC.

NEW RESULTS OF THE CHINA/KOREA JOINT STUDY ON OCEANOGRAPHY OF THE YELLOW SEA

China /Korea Joint Study on the oceanography of the Yellow Sea started in 1989. Multi-disciplinary oceanographic surveys were conducted in May and September 1992 by the chinese academy of Scences institute of Oceanology and in September 1992 by Korean Scientists led by the Inha University Ocean Scienee and Teclmology institute. Studies on marine geology, physical oceanography, marine chem istry, marine biology and fisheries were caried out. The main results of the multi-disciplinary studies were presented at the lst, 2nd and 3rd Internationdl Symposium on Marine sciences of the Yellow Sea held in 1989 (Inchon), 1991 (qingdao) and 1994 (Inchon), and published in the Proceedings and various *** main results and new findings of the studies are as follows.

UNIFICATION AND APPLICATIONS OF MODERN OCEANIC/ATMOSPHERIC DATA ASSIMILATION ALGORITHMS

The key mathematics and applications of various modern atmospheric/oceanicdata assimilation methods including Optimal Interpolation (OI), 4-dimensional variational approach(4D-Var) and filters were systematically reviewed and classified. Based on the data assimilationphilosophy, i. e. , using model dynamics to extract the observational information, the commoncharacter of the problem, such as the probabilistic nature of the evolution of theatmospheric/oceanic system, noisy and irregularly spaced observations, and the advantages anddisadvantages of these data assimilation algorithms, were discussed. In the filtering framework, allmodern data assimilation algorithms were unified: OI/3D-Var is a stationary filter, 4D-Var is alinear (Kalman) filter and an ensemble of Kalman filters is able to construct a nonlinear *** nonlinear filter such as the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EN-KF), Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filter(EAKF) and Ensemble Transformation Kalman Filter (ETKF) can, to some extent, account for thenon-Gaussian information of the prior distribution from the model. The flow-dependent covarianceestimated by an ensemble filter may be introduced to OI and 4D-Var to improve these traditionalalgorithms. In practice, the performance of algorithms may depend on the specific numerical modeland the choice of algorithm may depend on the specific problem. However, the unification ofalgorithms allows us to establish a unified test system to evaluate these algorithms, which providesmore insights into data assimilation philosophies and helps improve data assimilation techniques.
