Developing ChatGPT for biology and medicine: a complete review of biomedical question answering

ChatGPT explores a strategic blueprint of question answering(QA) to deliver medical diagnoses, treatment recommendations, and other healthcare support. This is achieved through the increasing incorporation of medical domain data via natural language processing(NLP) and multimodal paradigms. By transitioning the distribution of text, images, videos, and other modalities from the general domain to the medical domain, these techniques have accelerated the progress of medical domain question answering(MDQA). They bridge the gap between human natural language and sophisticated medical domain knowledge or expert-provided manual annotations, handling large-scale, diverse, unbalanced, or even unlabeled data analysis scenarios in medical contexts. Central to our focus is the utilization of language models and multimodal paradigms for medical question answering, aiming to guide the research community in selecting appropriate mechanisms for their specific medical research requirements.Specialized tasks such as unimodal-related question answering, reading comprehension, reasoning, diagnosis, relation extraction, probability modeling, and others, as well as multimodal-related tasks like vision question answering, image captioning, cross-modal retrieval, report summarization, and generation, are discussed in detail. Each section delves into the intricate specifics of the respective method under consideration. This paper highlights the structures and advancements of medical domain explorations against general domain methods, emphasizing their applications across different tasks and datasets. It also outlines current challenges and opportunities for future medical domain research,paving the way for continued innovation and application in this rapidly evolving field. This comprehensive review serves not only as an academic resource but also delineates the course for future probes and utilization in the field of medical question answering.

Stress-assisted corrosion mechanism of 3Ni steel by using gradient boosting decision tree machining learning method

Traditional 3Ni weathering steel cannot completely meet the requirements for offshore engineering development,resulting in the design of novel 3Ni steel with the addition of microalloy elements such as Mn or Nb for strength enhancement becoming a trend.The stress-assisted corrosion behavior of a novel designed high-strength 3Ni steel was investigated in the current study using the corrosion big data method.The information on the corrosion process was recorded using the galvanic corrosion current monitoring method.The gradi-ent boosting decision tree(GBDT)machine learning method was used to mine the corrosion mechanism,and the importance of the struc-ture factor was investigated.Field exposure tests were conducted to verify the calculated results using the GBDT method.Results indic-ated that the GBDT method can be effectively used to study the influence of structural factors on the corrosion process of 3Ni steel.Dif-ferent mechanisms for the addition of Mn and Cu to the stress-assisted corrosion of 3Ni steel suggested that Mn and Cu have no obvious effect on the corrosion rate of non-stressed 3Ni steel during the early stage of corrosion.When the corrosion reached a stable state,the in-crease in Mn element content increased the corrosion rate of 3Ni steel,while Cu reduced this rate.In the presence of stress,the increase in Mn element content and Cu addition can inhibit the corrosion process.The corrosion law of outdoor-exposed 3Ni steel is consistent with the law based on corrosion big data technology,verifying the reliability of the big data evaluation method and data prediction model selection.

Metal/covalent organic frameworks for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries

lithium-ion batteries(liBs)have become one of the most successful energy storage systems due to their high operating voltage,high energy density,and long cycle life.However,with the widespread use of liBs in recent decades,lithium resources are at risk of being exhausted.Therefore,it is necessary to find a substitute for liBs to meet the needs of future large-scale energy storage systems.Because of their competitiveness,low cost,and high safety,aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries(ARZIBs)are regarded as promising components in the post-lithium-ion-battery era.Given the tunable composition,ordered porous channels,and controllable structure of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)and covalent organic frameworks(COFs),these frameworks are viewed as potential materials for developing high-performance ARZIBs.In this review,we focus on the recent developments in the applications of MOF-/COF-based materials in ARZIBs,including in electrode materials,anode modifications,separators,and solid electrolytes.We then focus on the critical factors and optimization techniques of MOF-/COF-based materials that affect the performance of ARZIBs.Finally,we conclude with some projections for the expansion of ARZIBs containing MOF-/COF-based materials.

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder accompanied by movement disorders and neuroinflammatory injury.Anti-inflammatory intervention to regulate oxidative stress in the brain is beneficial for managing PD.However,traditional natural antioxidants have failed to meet the clinical treatment demands due to insufficient activity and sustainability.Herein,Cu-doping zeolite imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8)nanozyme is designed to simulate Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase(SOD)by biomimetic mineralization.The nanozyme composite is then integrated into thermosensitive hydrogel(poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA-PEG-PLGA))to form an effective antioxidant system(Cu-ZIF@Hydrogel).The thermosensitive hydrogel incorporating nanozymes demonstrate distinct viscoelastic properties aimed at enhancing local nanozyme adhesion,prolonging nanozyme retention time,and modulating antioxidant activity,thus significantly improving the bioavailability of nanozymes.At the cellular and animal levels of PD,we find that Cu-ZIF@Hydrogel bypass the blood-brain barrier and efficiently accumulate in the nerve cells.Moreover,the Cu-ZIF@Hydrogel significantly alleviate the PD’s behavioral and pathological symptoms by reducing the neuroinflammatory levels in the lesion site.Therefore,the hydrogel-incorporating nanozyme system holds great potential as a simple and reliable avenue for managing PD.

The effects of cryogenic treatment（CT） and tempering-cryogenic treatment（TCT） on the microstructure and properties of coarse-grained WC-10Co cemented carbides with different carbon contents were researched.The binder phase,WC mean grain sizes,W solubility in the binder,relative magnetic s aturation,densities,hardness,wear resistance and second phase precipitation of cemented carbides with different heat treatments were discussed.The results show that there are significant changes of microstructure and properties in the samples with CT and TCT,especially due to the precipitation of metastable nanoparticles WxCoyCzin the binder during the heat treatments of CT and TCT.With the simultaneous combination of microstructure and nanoparticle-reinforced binder,a dramatically improved combination of hardness and wear resistance of the samples after TCT has been achieved.

Combining machine and deep transfer learning for mediastinal lymph node evaluation in patients with lung cancer

Background The prognosis and survival of patients with lung cancer are likely to deteriorate with metastasis.Using deep-learning in the detection of lymph node metastasis can facilitate the noninvasive calculation of the likelihood of such metastasis,thereby providing clinicians with crucial information to enhance diagnostic precision and ultimately improve patient survival and prognosis.Methods In total,623 eligible patients were recruited from two medical institutions.Seven deep learning models,namely Alex,GoogLeNet,Resnet18,Resnet101,Vgg16,Vgg19,and MobileNetv3(small),were utilized to extract deep image histological features.The dimensionality of the extracted features was then reduced using the Spearman correlation coefficient(r≥0.9)and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator.Eleven machine learning methods,namely Support Vector Machine,K-nearest neighbor,Random Forest,Extra Trees,XGBoost,lightGBM,Naive Bayes,AdaBoost,Gradient Boosting Decision Tree,linear Regression,and Multilayer Perceptron,were employed to construct classification prediction models for the filtered final features.The diagnostic performances of the models were assessed using various metrics,including accuracy,area under the receiver operating characteristic curve,sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value,and negative predictive value.Calibration and decision-curve analyses were also performed.Results The present study demonstrated that using deep radiomic features extracted from Vgg16,in conjunction with a prediction model constructed via a linear regression algorithm,effectively distinguished the status of mediastinal lymph nodes in patients with lung cancer.The performance of the model was evaluated based on various metrics,including accuracy,area under the receiver operating characteristic curve,sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value,and negative predictive value,which yielded values of 0.808,0.834,0.851,0.745,0.829,and 0.776,respectively.The validation set of the model was assessed using clinical decision curv

The complex air pollution driven by both Ozone(O_(3))and fine particulate matter(PM2.5)sig nificantly influences the air quality in the Sichuan Basin(SCB).Understanding the O_(3)for mation during autumn and winter is necessary to understand the atmospheric oxidative capacity.Therefore,continuous in-site field observations were carried out during the late summer,early autumn and winter of 2020 in a rural area of Chongqing.The total volatile organic compounds(VOCs)concentration reported by a Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of Flight Mass Spectrometry(PTR-ToF-MS)were 13.66±9.75 ppb,5.50±2.64 ppb,and 9.41±5.11 ppb in late summer,early autumn and winter,respectively.The anthropogenic VOCs(AVOCs)and biogenic VOCs(BVOCs)were 8.48±7.92 ppb and 5.18±2.99 ppb in late sum mer,3.31±1.89 ppb and 2.19±0.93 ppb in autumn,and 6.22±3.99 ppb and 3.20±1.27ppb in winter.A zero-dimensional atmospheric box model was employed to investigate the sensitivity of O_(3)-precursors by relative incremental reactivity(RIR).The RIR values of AV OCs,BVOCs,carbon monoxide(CO),and nitrogen oxides(NOx)were 0.31,0.71,0.09,and-0.36 for late summer,0.24,0.59,0.22,and-0.38 for early autumn,and 0.30,0.64,0.33 and-0.70 for winter,and the results showed that the O_(3)formation of sampling area was in the VOC-limited region,and O_(3)was most sensitive to BVOCs(with highest RIR values,>0.6)This study can be helpful in understanding O_(3)formation and interpreting the secondary formation of aerosols in the winter.

A neural m^(6)A pathway regulates behavioral aggregation in migratory locusts

RNA N6-methyladenosine(m^(6)A),as the most abundant modification of messenger RNA,can modulate insect behaviors,but its specific roles in aggregation behaviors remain unexplored.Here,we conducted a comprehensive molecular and physiological characterization of the individual components of the methyltransferase and demethylase in the migratory locust Locusta migratoria.Our results demonstrated that METTL3,METTL14 and ALKBH5 were dominantly expressed in the brain and exhibited remarkable responses to crowding or isolation.The individual knockdown of methyltransferases(i.e.,METTL3 and METTL14)promoted locust movement and conspecific attraction,whereas ALKBH5 knockdown induced a behavioral shift toward the solitary phase.Furthermore,global transcriptome profiles revealed that m^(6)A modification could regulate the orchestration of gene expression to fine tune the behavioral aggregation of locusts.In summary,our in vivo characterization of the m^(6)A functions in migratory locusts clearly demonstrated the crucial roles of the m^(6)A pathway in effectively modulating aggregation behaviors.

Multi-Scale Pore Structure Heterogeneity in Tuff Reservoirs Investigated with Multi-Experimental Method and Fractal Dimensions in Chang 7 Formation,Southern Ordos Basin

The tight tuff reservoir is an unusual type of unconventional reservoir with strong heterogeneity.However,there is a lack of research on the microscopic pore structure that causes the heterogeneity of tuff reservoirs.Using the Chang 7 Formation in Ordos Basin,China as a case study,carbon-dioxide gas adsorption,nitrogen gas adsorption and high-pressure mercury injection are integrated to investigate the multi-scale pore structure characteristics of tuff reservoirs.Meanwhile,the fractal dimension is introduced to characterize the complexity of pore structure in tuff reservoirs.By this multi-experimental method,the quantitative characterizations of the full-range pore size distribution of four tuff types were obtained and compared in the size ranges of micropores,mesopores and macropores.Fractal dimension curves derived from full-range pores are divided into six segments as D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6 corresponding to fractal characteristics of micropores,smaller mesopores,larger mesopores,smaller macropores,medium macropores and larger macropores,respectively.The macropore volume,average macropore radius and fractal dimension D5 significantly control petrophysical properties.The larger macropore volume,average macropore radius and D5 correspond to favorable pore structure and good reservoir quality,which provides new indexes for the tuff reservoir evaluation.This study enriches the understanding of the heterogeneity of pore structures and contributes to unconventional oil and gas exploration and development.
