Seaweed is a traditional Chinese medicine homologous to food,in which polysaccharides are responsible for anti-cancer by enhancing immunity,inducing cancer cell apoptosis,inhibiting cancer cell invasion and metastasis or directly scavenging oxidative free radicals that induce cancer cell changes.Among them,regulating immunity and promoting cancer cell apoptosis are intensively studied due to the important role in preventing cancer.Here we reviewed seaweed in the apoptosis-inducing signaling pathways including PI3K/AKT,ROS and JNK and discussed challenges in studying seaweed.

The roll angular rate is much crucial for the guidance and control of the projectile.Yet the high-speed rotation of the projectile brings severe challenges to the direct measurement of the roll angular rate.Nevertheless,the radial magnetometer signal is modulated by the high-speed rotation,thus the roll angular rate can be achieved by extracting the instantaneous frequency of the radial magnetometer signal.The objective of this study is to find out a precise instantaneous frequency extraction method to obtain an accurate roll angular rate.To reach this goal,a modified spline-kernelled chirplet transform(MSCT)algorithm is proposed in this paper.Due to the nonlinear frequency modulation characteristics of the radial magnetometer signal,the existing time-frequency analysis methods in literature cannot obtain an excellent energy concentration in the time-frequency plane,thereby leading to a terrible instantaneous frequency extraction accuracy.However,the MSCT can overcome the problem of bad energy concentration by replacing the short-time Fourier transform operator with the Chirp Z-transform operator based on the original spline-kernelled chirplet transform.The introduction of Chirp Z-transform can improve the construction accuracy of the transform kernel.Since the construction accuracy of the transform kernel determines the concentration of time-frequency distribution,the MSCT can obtain a more precise instantaneous frequency.The performance of the MSCT was evaluated by a series of numerical simulations,high-speed turntable experiments,and real flight tests.The evaluation results show that the MSCT has an excellent ability to process the nonlinear frequency modulation signal,and can accurately extract the roll angular rate for the high spinning projectiles.

Wound healing is a highly orchestrated process involving a variety of cells,including immune cells.Developing immunomodulatory biomaterials for regenerative engineering applications,such as bone regeneration,is an appealing strategy.Herein,inspired by the immunomodulatory effects of gastrodin(a bioactive component in traditional Chinese herbal medicine),a series of new immunomodulatory gastrodin-comprising biodegradable polyurethane(gastrodin-PU)and nano-hydroxyapatite(n-HA)(gastrodin-PU/n-HA)composites were developed.RAW 264.7 macrophages,rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(rBMSCs),and human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)were cultured with gastrodin-PU/n-HA containing different concentrations of gastrodin(0.5%,1%,and 2%)to decipher their immunomodulatory effects on osteogenesis and angiogenesis in vitro.Results demonstrated that,compared with PU/n-HA,gastrodin-PU/n-HA induced macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype,as evidenced by the higher expression level of pro-regenerative cytokines(CD206,Arg-1)and the lower expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines(iNOS).The expression levels of osteogenesis-related factors(BMP-2 and ALP)in the rBMSCs and angiogenesis-related factors(VEGF and BFGF)in the HUVECs were significantly up-regulated in gastrodin-PU/n-HA/macrophage-conditioned medium.The immunomodulatory effects of gastrodin-PU/n-HA to reprogram macrophages from a pro-inflammatory(M1)phenotype to an anti-inflammatory and pro-healing(M2)phenotype were validated in a rat subcutaneous implantation model.And the 2%gastrodin-PU/n-HA significantly decreased fibrous capsule formation and enhanced angiogenesis.Additionally,2%gastrodin-PU/n-HA scaffolds implanted in the rat femoral condyle defect model showed accelerated osteogenesis and angiogenesis.Thus,the novel gastrodin-PU/n-HA scaffold may represent a new and promising immunomodulatory biomaterial for bone repair and regeneration.

Multi-cellular organisms such as humans contain hundreds of cell types that share the same genetic information(DNA sequences),and yet have different cellular traits and functions.While how genetic information is passed through generations has been extensively characterized,it remains largely obscure how epigenetic information encoded by chromatin regulates the passage of certain traits,gene expression states and cell identity during mitotic cell divisions,and even through meiosis.In this review,we will summarize the recent advances on molecular mechanisms of epigenetic inheritance,discuss the potential impacts of epigenetic inheritance during normal development and in some disease conditions,and outline future research directions for this challenging,but exciting field.
