For monomer reactivity ratios study, the copolymerization of D,L-3.methylglycolide (MG) with glycolide (GA) or D,L-lactide (LA) was carried out in bulk to a certain low conversion in the presence of stannous octoate at 140 degrees C. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The monomer reactivity ratios were evaluated by Fineman-Ross method, Kelen-Tudos method and linear least-squares method. The monomer reactivity ratios of D,L-3.methylglycolide and glycolide or D,L-lactide are r(mg)= 0.73. r(ga)= 1.47; r(mg)= 1.71, r(la)= 0.92, respectively.

In the UV-Vis spectra of pure light-scattering systems, there is an exponential relationship between absorbance and wavelength （A = Kλ^-n）. Here, the exponent n is named as flocculation-coagulation parameter. In the present paper, the effects of different additives on the stability of poly（N,N＇-methylenebisacrylamide-co-4-vinylpyridine）（poly（Bis-co-4-VP）） microgel dispersion were studied in detail via this parameter. The results showed that the stability of the dispersion mainly comes from the ionization of pyridine groups, making the microgel positively charged on its surface. This was confirmed by the measurement of Zeta potential and the result of conductometric titration. The result of fluorescence analysis indicated that the hydrophobicity in the microgels is enhanced with the increase in total 4-VP unit content.

The morphological transition of molecular assemblies in aqueous solutions for a new amphiphilic diblock copolymer induced by changing the initial solvent conditions was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The copolymer was polystyrene(77)-b-poly[2-(beta -D-glucopyranosyloxy)ethyl acrylate (6)] (PSt(77)-b-PGEA(6)) and the solvent was a mixture of DMF and THF. PSt(77)-b-PGEA(6) yields vesicles and tubules when it is initially dissolved in THF and DMF respectively. The morphological transition between vesicles and tubules can be achieved by simply varying the amounts of THF and DMF, or changing the temperature at which the aggregates were prepared.

The effects of L-phenylalanine （L-Phe） on the synthesis ofpoly（N,N＇-methylenebisacrylamide-co-4-vinylpyridine）（poly（Bis-co-4-VP））（micro）gels by γ-ray irradiation were studied. The addition of L-Phe could not only decrease the gelation dose （Dg） of the synthesis obviously, but also transform the morphology of copolymer from microgel to gel. In addition, the swelling ability of the （micro）gels was also affected in the presence of L-Phe. The decrease of Dg was ascribed to the effect of pH, while the transformation of the morphology was ascribed to the effect of L-Phe on the stability of the poly（Bis-co-4-VP） microgel. Such an effect was confirmed further as compared with the effects of L-alanine, L-glutamic acid, L-arginine, sulfuric acid and aqueous ammonia.

The kinetics of I-->N transition of a side chain nematic polymethacrylate has been studied by small angle depolarized light scattering intensity measurements using a charge coupled device linear image sensor. The polymer shows the transition temperatures K52N79I in degreesC, The H-v scattering intensity T(q,t) during the transition I (at 80.2degreesC)-->N (at 75.8degreesC) shows that T(q) is independent of q for all t, and during the initial stage (in 6 s) T(t) increases exponentially with t. In the later stage of the transition T(t) approaches a saturation value in 2 min. This experimental result indicates that the I-->N transition of a liquid crystalline polymer is a spinodal type of phase transition mediated by orientation fluctuation.

Mesoporous poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)/silica hybrid materials have been prepared. The synthesis was achieved by the HCl-catalyzed sol-gel reactions of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer in the presence of 3.aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) as a coupling agent and citric acid as a nonsurfactant template or pore-forming agent, followed by ethanol extraction. Characterization results from nitrogen sorption isotherms and powder X-ray diffraction indicate that polymer-modified mesoporous materials with large specific surface areas (e.g. 900 m(2)/g) and pore volumes (e.g. 0.6 cm(3./g) could be prepared. As the citric acid concentration is increased, the specific surface areas, pore volumes and pore diameters of the hybrid materials increase.

Hybrid mesoporous polystyrene-silica materials were successfully prepared through HCl-catalyzed sol-gel reactions of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and triethoxysilyl-functionalized polystyrene obtained via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene, in the presence of citric acid (CA) as non-surfactant template or pore-forming agent and followed by ethanol extraction to remove template molecules. The materials were characterized by infrared spectroscopy OR), N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that the materials prepared with 50 wt%-60 wt% template contents have average pore sizes of 2-3.nm and large surface areas (ca. 886 m(2)/g) as well as high pore volumes (ca. 0.53.cm(3./g). The mesoporosity arises from interconnected channels and pores with disordered arrangements. The pore diameters and pore volumes increase as the template content is increased. The pore diameters show a little change upon heating at 200degreesC overnight. However, the materials do not have good hydrothermal stability.

Some diacetylene-containing copolyesters with different ratios of dipropargyl 1,10-decanate anddipropargyl terephthalate were synthesized. Properties of these copolymers were characterized by differentialscanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. The copolymer could be cross-linked easily by UVirradiation in a liquid crystal matrix without adding any photoinitiator. The preliminary studies showed thatthe diacetylene-containing polymer network can assist liquid crystal molecules to align with the externalelectric field, thus reducing the response time of display devices.

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using cuprous chloride/2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) was applied to graft polymerization of styrene on the surface of silica nanoparticles to synthesize polymer-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles, 2-(4Chloromethylphenyl) ethyltriethoxysilane (CTES) was immobilized on the surface of silica nanoparticles through condensation reaction of the silanol groups on silica with triethoxysilane group of CTES. Then ATRP of St was initiated by this surface-modified silica nanoparticles bearing benzyl chloride groups, and formed PSt graft chains on the surface of silica nanoparticles. The thickness of the graft chains increased with reaction time. End group analysis confirmed the occurrence of ATRP. Thermal analysis indicated that thermal stabilization of these resulting hybrid nanoparticles also increases with polymerization conversion. The results above show that this 'grafting from' reaction could be used for the preparation of polymer-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles with controlled structure of the polymer's end groups.
