The present study aimed to determine whether natural dehydrated feed (DNF) can replace dry extruded feed while preserving the required daily intake, nutrient digestibility and benefits for immunity and antioxidant response in cats. The animals were divided into two groups of seven animals each. One group received DNF, and the other consumed commercial extruded dry feed (DCF). The experiment lasted 45 days and we measured daily consumption and collected blood and feces samples. The animals in the DNF group showed greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter than DCF. Cats in the DNF group had a higher volume of feces. DNF cats had lower leukocyte and granulocyte counts and cholesterol levels. Serum enzymatic antioxidant responses and non-enzymatic were higher in DNF cats. Cats in the DNF group showed lower serum acute phase proteins in addition to a tendency toward a higher concentration of transferrin than in the DCF group. Fecal Escherichia coli and total coliform counts of cats fed DNF were higher than DCF. We conclude that the daily consumption of cats is adequate. This feed had greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter, in addition to an improvement in antioxidant and immunological responses.

We determined whether the inclusion of 100 g/kg dry matter of grape pomace silage (GPS) and grape pomace bran (GPB) as substitutes for other traditional fiber sources in the diet of steers (Charolais x Nellore) would improve carcass characteristics, meat quality and composition, and shelf life. Twenty-four animals (248 ± 19.32 kg of initial body weight) were fed a high concentrate diet for 121 days. Carcass characteristics were measured, and the longissimus dorsi muscle was analyzed for fatty acid (FA) profile and composition. The meat was sliced and stored in air-permeable packages for 10 days. On each sampling day (d 1, 3, 7, and 10), oxidative stability, bacterial load, lipid and protein oxidation, and staining were analyzed. The experimental diets influenced the pH of cold carcasses only. The GPS group had a higher pH than the control. The GPS and GPB groups showed improved oxidant status (i.e., lower lipid peroxidation and concentrations of reactive oxygen species were in the meat of both groups than in control). On the first day of storage, the antioxidant enzyme glutathione S-transferase activity was more significant in the meat of the GPS and GPB groups than in the control. The bacterial loads in the meat were attenuated by GPS inclusion;there were lower total coliform counts and a trend toward lower counts for enterobacteria in the control group. The diets altered the FA profile of the meat;i.e., the GPB diet allowed for a more significant amount of the n-6 omegas in the meat, while the GPS diet showed a tendency for a more significant amount of n-6 and 9 omegas. Both diets (GPS and GPB) increased the amounts of long-chain FAs. The GPS diet decreased saturated FA levels. We conclude that the dietary treatments GPS and GPB are a promising alternative to maintain meat quality standards throughout in real-world retail conditions. The effect of addition of Ru and Pd to Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts used in the dehydroaromatization of methane was investigated. Catalytic tests and temperature-programmed oxidation results showed that Pd-based catalysts were more selective to naphthalene and suffered strong deactivation. The presence of Ru improved the activity and stability, with a decrease in the carbonaceous deposit probably because of a mechanism of protection of the Mo2C surface.

Immunology-based therapy is rapidly developing into an effective treatment option for a surprising range of cancers. We have learned over the last decade that powerful immunologic effector cells may be blocked by inhibitory regulatory pathways controlled by specific molecules often called "immune checkpoints." These checkpoints serve to control or turn off the immune response when it is no longer needed to prevent tissue injury and autoimmunity. Cancer cells have learned or evolved to use these mechanisms to evade immune control and elimination. The development of a new therapeutic class of drugs that inhibit these inhibitory pathways has recently emerged as a potent strategy in oncology. Three sets of agents have emerged in clinical trials exploiting this strategy. These agents are antibodybased therapies targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4(CTLA4), programmed cell death 1(PD-1), and programmed cell death ligand 1(PD-L1). These inhibitors of immune inhibition have demonstrated extensive activity as single agents and in combinations. Clinical responses have been seen in melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and several other tumor types. Despite the autoimmune or inflammatory immune-mediated adverse effects which have been seen, the responses and overall survival benefits exhibited thus far warrant further clinical development.

Evaluation of the Quality of Life in Pre- and Post-Operatory in Patients Submitted to Surgical Treatment of Reflux Disease and Hiato Hernia

Gastroesophageal reflux disease affects 40% of the population in industrialized countries. GERD has a negative impact on the quality of life of affected patients. Although PPIs induce a good response in the control of symptoms, the need for prolonged use of the medication and the fact that more than a third of the patients have symptoms even after its correct use, make surgery, an alternative for the treatment of the disease. The aims of this study were to compare the quality of life related to GERD before and after MIS surgical treatment of GERD and/or hiatus hernia, and to analyze the results and complications of the MIS treatment of GERD. Methods: For retrospective analysis, the electronic database of patients with indications for surgical treatment due to GERD and/or patients with sliding or paraesophageal hernias was examined. The study included patients from Hospital Universitário Gaffrée e Guinle and the Postgraduate Course in General Surgery at PUC-Rio (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) who underwent surgery using video laparoscopy or robotic surgery between January 2013 and March 2020. This is an observational, longitudinal, descriptive study with retrospective analysis of the data. Surgical treatment was indicated due to incomplete response to clinical treatment, young age with persistent symptoms, or complications of GERD. Patients with hiatus and/or paraesophageal hernia with indication for surgical treatment were included. Results: The study evaluated 160 patients who underwent anti-reflux surgery by laparoscopic or robotic surgery in the period from 2013 to 2020. A total of 88 women and 72 men were operated, mean 46.6 ± 13.7 years. An improvement in the preoperative QS-GERD scores compared to the postoperative scores was observed (27.56 ± 10.93 vs 1.4 ± 2.47, p < 0.01).
