We review recent developments in the use of magnetic lattices as a complementary tool to optical lattices for trapping periodic arrays of ultracold atoms and degenerate quantum gases. Recent advances include the realisation of Bose–Einstein condensation in multiple sites of a magnetic lattice of one-dimensional microtraps, the trapping of ultracold atoms in square and triangular magnetic lattices,and the fabrication of magnetic lattice structures with submicron period suitable for quantum tunnelling ***, we describe a proposal to utilise long-range interacting Rydberg atoms in a large spacing magnetic lattice to create interactions between atoms on neighbouring sites.

Reliable information on the solubility of hydrogen in aluminum and its alloys is critical to the effort of the aluminum industry to control and ameliorate the usually deleterious effects of hydrogen on the properties and performance of pure aluminum and aluminum alloy products. Unfortunately, there is a significant disparity between published values of hydrogen solubility in pure aluminum and aluminum alloys. This is because the measurement of the extremely low soluble hydrogen concentration in aluminum and its alloys is experimentally difficult. Also, the reproducibility, accuracy, and reliability of the hydrogen solubility values are very sensitive to the measurement techniques, test conditions, chemical composition, and state of the aluminum sample. Thus, no serious discussion of the reliability of reported values of hydrogen solubility in aluminum and its alloys can be undertaken without a critical assessment of the fundamental principles of the experimental techniques used in the determination of the reported values. In this article, a critical review of the fundamental principles of the experimental techniques used in the measurement of hydrogen solubility in liquid and solid pure aluminum and aluminum alloys is presented. In addition, the reliability and possible accuracy of reported values of hydrogen solubility in solid and liquid pure aluminum are critically assessed. Empirical equations for calculating hydrogen solubility in liquid and solid pure aluminum as a function of temperature and pressure, derived from the most reliable sets of data are recommended. At 101.3 kPa (1 atm.) hydrogen partial pressure, the most reliable values of hydrogen solubility at the melting point (833 K) of pure aluminum are 0.71 cm3/100g (i.e., 6.32 × 10-5 wt.% H) and 0.043 cm3/100g (i.e., 3.81 × 10-6 wt.% H), in the liquid and solid state, respectively. So, the partition coefficient of hydrogen in pure aluminum is 0.061.

Microbial diversity in coastal sediments during pre- and post-tsunami periods in the south east coast of India

Sediment samples were collected from 12 beaches affected by the 2004 Asian Tsunami in the south-east coast of India between Vanagiri and Nagoor. The objective of the present study is to delineate the microbial diversity in pre- and post-tsunami disaster coastal sediments. The collected marine sediments indicate that the overall microbial diversity is higher in the pre-tsunami sediments. The increase in pathogenic bacteria and fungal species after the tsunami is obscured due to inundation and backwashing of seawater along the coast. The reduction of other microbial diversity after the tsunami is attributed that the coastal and shelf sediments play an important role in the demineralization of organic matter, which supports the growth of microbes. The continuous exchange of ocean water and backwashing of coastal sediments by the tsunami wave probably reduced the pathogenic bacterial diversity in the sediments.

The analysis of the effectiveness and efficiency of Vernomia amydalina (VA) solution as an inhibitor on offshore pipeline and Ship materials (Steel) was carried out with the preparation of the specimen and the VA solution. The specimens were kept in a workable state and the VA Solution (inhibitor) prepared from 1200 g of bitter leaf was plucked, weighed and crushed separately. 600 cl of water was added to each of the crushed leaves. The mixture was put in a filter cloth and squeezed with hand to filter out the active concentration ingredients responsible for corrosion inhibition, which produced a 2 M concentration of VA extract solution. After the experiment was carried out the specimen was air-dried and weighed to determine the corrosion rate and weight loss. This was followed by the determination of the inhibitor efficiency at the different hours and at different percentage/concentration of the VA solution on the specimen. Results were obtained for different hours and at different percentage (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% inhibitor)/concentration of the VA solution and graphs plotted. It was observed that at the first week of exposure to corrosive medium there was a substantial reduction in weight of coupons but over the next three weeks there was a gradual decline in weight loss and the corrosion rate reduced evenly. It can be said that the percentage of inhibitor to corrosive medium is insufficient. From the graphs plotted, the inhibitor efficiency is considered high when the concentration of the VA solution is high, which implies a right percentage of inhibitor needs to be administered to obtain good efficiency of the solution. Hence as the weeks go by it was clear that the inhibitor was gradually losing its effectiveness. This means that inhibitors need to be added at regular intervals to sustain the effectiveness of the inhibitor. A Qualitative Study of the Influence of Grooved Mold Surface Topography on the Formation of Surface Marks on As-Cast Ingots of Aluminum Alloy 3003

The effects of the wavelength and orientation of machined grooves on a mold surface, casting speed, and melt superheat on the formation of surface marks on as-cast ingots were studied with an immersion casting tester and copper mold chill blocks. The mold surface topographies included a polished smooth surface, and those with machined unidirectional parallel contoured grooves oriented either parallel (vertical) or perpendicular (horizontal) to the casting direction. The unidirectional grooves were 0.232 mm deep with wavelength or spacing between 1 and 15 mm. The casting speed and melt superheat were between 1 and 200 mm/s, and 10 and 50 K, respectively. Two primary types of surface marks were observed on ingots cast with the copper mold with smooth surface topography, namely the finer and closely spaced ripples (Type I), and the widely spaced but coarser laps (Type II). The latter were more prevalent at the higher casting speeds and melt superheats. Qualitatively, formation of both types of surface marks on the as-cast ingots of the aluminum alloy 3003 appeared to be alleviated by increase in casting speed and melt superheat, and by the use of molds with grooved surface topography. In fact, casting with a mold surface with 1 mm spaced grooves that are perpendicular to the casting direction eliminated the formation of surface marks at casting speeds greater than 1 mm/s. It also improved the uniformity of the ingot subsurface microstructure and eliminated the associated subsurface segregation.
