Controlled release of TDI and hence the cure characteristics of several blocked TDI with HTPB are reported. The reactions were followed through viscosity measurements as a function of time and temperature under the catalytic influence of triethylamine. The effect of nature of substituents present on the end capping substrate, temperature, solvent, basicity of catalyst and kinetics thereon have been studied.

Peripheral Neuropathy after Open Abdominal Surgery with Self-Retaining Retractors. A Systematic Review of Randomised and Non-Randomised Clinical Trials

Objectives : A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of incision retention available to surgeons conducting open abdominal or pelvic surgeries. Both the ability of the retractor to retain the wound and harm to the patient due to the retractor were reviewed. Methods : A search was conducted using the following databases: EMBASE, PubMed, BIOSIS, Engineering Village, Web of Science, Best practice, Science Direct, CRCnet BASE, Proquest, Wiley Online Library, and Comprehensive Biomaterial. Results : What the articles found were then narrowed down to those which matched the objective of the review. This resulted in ten articles to review. Two reviewers reviewed and summarized the articles. Femoral neuropathy was found to be a common complication due to Retractors. Other outcomes analysed or studied were found to be infected, postoperative pain and exposure provided. Femoral neuropathy can be estimated to occur at a rate between 2.6% and 7.5% in open pelvic and abdominal surgeries. The Alexis O-ring retractor was found to lower the required morphine intake following surgery when compared to the Belfour retractor. Conclusions : There is a lack of high quality/high levels of evidence studies that have been conducted on Retractors. Femoral neuropathy is the outcome most commonly documented in relation to Retractors. Surgeons need to be aware about the use and implementations of the retractors. Care should be taken in protecting the blades and during long surgery relocating retractors should be considered.

Forestry Interventions and Groundwater Recharge, Sediment Control and Carbon Sequestration in the Krishna River Basin

It is a known fact that human activities have a significant impact on global rivers, making the task of rehabilitating them to their former natural state or a more semi-natural state quite challenging. The ongoing initiative called “Rejuvenation of Krishna River through Forestry Interventions” aims to contribute to the overall river rejuvenation program in the country. In this context, the effects of forestry interventions on the Krishna River will be evaluated based on water quantity, water quality, and the potential for carbon sequestration through plantation efforts. To assess the outcomes of this study, various methodologies such as Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have been utilized to estimate water savings, reduction in sedimentation, and carbon sequestration potential within the Krishna basin. The projected results indicate that the implementation of forestry plantations and soil and moisture conservation measures in the Krishna River rejuvenation program could lead to significant improvements. Specifically, the interventions are expected to enhance water recharge by 400.49 million cubic meters per year, reduce sedimentation load by 869.22 cubic meters per year, and increase carbon sequestration by 3.91 lakh metric tonnes per year or 14.34 lakh metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent. By incorporating forestry interventions into the Krishna riverscape, it is anticipated that the quality and quantity of water flowing through the river will be positively impacted. These interventions will enhance water infiltration, mitigate soil erosion, and contribute to an improved vegetation cover, thereby conserving biodiversity. Moreover, they offer additional intangible benefits such as addressing climate change concerns through enhanced carbon sequestration potential along the entire stretch of riverine areas.

Assessment of the Potential Use of Hydroponic Effluents for Fodder Production

The performance of Guatemala grass (Tripsacum laxum) under fertigation using hydroponic effluents at different dilution rates (effluent: water: 4:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:4) was compared to fertilisation using farmers" fertiliser rate of 475 kg 17:8:25/ha applied at planting + 235 kg Sulphate of Ammonia/ha applied as top dressing one month after and 150 kg 17:8:25/ha applied after each harvest. Yield response obtained in plots fertilised using undiluted hydroponic effluents was 16.7% lower than that recorded in plots fertilised using farmers" fertiliser rate. The study showed that there is potential for using hydroponic effluents (undiluted or diluted in the ratio of 3 HE: 1 water) in fodder production as it can provide sustainable yield in the range of 39.5-41.7 t/ha per harvest. Moreover, dilution rate of hydroponic effluents has a direct impact on crop development and fresh biomass yield. Fodder crop yield responded negatively to the increase dilution of hydroponic effluents from 4HE: 0 water to 3HE: 1 water, 1HE: 1 water and 1HE: 3 water. Consequently, the use of hydroponic effluents can eventually help to save on mineral fertiliser use and reduce cost of production while at the same time address environmental hazards related to hydroponic effluents disposal.
