Broadband mid-infrared(IR)supercontinuum laser sources are essential for spectroscopy in the molecular fingerprint ***,we report generation of octave-spanning and coherent mid-IR supercontinua in As_(2)S_(3)-silica nanospike hybrid waveguides pumped by a custom-built 2.8μm femtosecond fiber *** waveguides are formed by pressure-assisted melt-filling of molten As_(2)S_(3) into silica capillaries,allowing the dispersion and nonlinearity to be precisely *** coherent spectra spanning from 1.1μm to 4.8μm(30 dB level)are observed when the waveguide is designed so that 2.8μm lies in the anomalous dispersion ***,linearly tapered millimeter-scale As_(2)S_(3)-silica waveguides are fabricated and investigated for the first time,to the best of our knowledge,showing much broader supercontinua than uniform waveguides,with improved spectral *** waveguides are demonstrated to be long-term stable and water-resistant due to the shielding of the As_(2)S_(3) by the fused silica *** offer an alternative route to generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua,with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy,especially in humid and aqueous environments.

Laser cooling of mechanical degrees of freedom is one of the most significant achievements in the field of ***,we report,for the first time to the best of our knowledge,efficient passive optomechanical cooling of the motion of a freestanding waveguide coupled to a whispering gallery-mode(WGM)*** waveguide is an 8 mm long glass-fiber nanospike,which has a fundamental flexural resonance atΩ/2π=2.5 kHz and a Q-factor of 1.2×10^*** launching^250μW laser power at an optical frequency close to the WGM resonant frequency,we observed cooling of the nanospike resonance from room temperature down to 1.8 *** cooling of the first higher-order mechanical mode is also *** strong suppression of the overall Brownian motion of the nanospike,observed as an 11.6 dB reduction in its mean square displacement,indicates strong optomechanical stabilization of linear coupling between the nanospike and the cavity *** cooling is caused predominantly by a combination of photothermal effects and optical forces between nanospike and WGM *** results are of direct relevance in the many applications of WGM resonators,including atom physics,optomechanics,and sensing.

We demonstrate generation of 7.6 fs near-UV pulses centered at 400 nm via 8-fold soliton-effect self-compression in an Ar-filled hollow-core kagomé-style photonic crystal fiber with ultrathin core *** calculations of the effective compression length and soliton order permit adj.stment of the experimental parameters,and numerical modeling of the nonlinear pulse dynamics in the fiber accurately predicts the spectrotemporal profiles of the self-compressed *** compensation of phase distortion introduced by the optical elements along the beam path from the fiber to the diagnostics,71%of the pulse energy was in the main temporal lobe,with peak powers in excess of 0.2 *** convenient setup opens up new opportunities for time-resolved studies in spectroscopy,chemistry,and materials science.

T1ρ/T2 mapping and histopathology of degenerative cartilage in advanced knee osteoarthritis

AIM To investigate whether normal thickness cartilage in osteoarthritic knees demonstrate depletion of proteoglycan or collagen content compared to healthy *** Magnetic resonance(MR) images were acquired from5 subj.cts scheduled for total knee arthroplasty(TKA)(mean age 70 years) and 20 young healthy control subj.cts without knee pain(mean age 28.9 years). MR images of T1ρ mapping, T2 mapping, and fat suppressed proton-density weighted sequences were *** TKA each condyle was divided into 4 parts(distal medial, posterior medial, distal lateral, posterior lateral) for cartilage analysis. Twenty specimens(bone and cartilage blocks) were examined. For each j.int,the degree and extent of cartilage destruction was determined using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International cartilage histopathology assessment *** magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) analysis, 2 readers performed cartilage segmentation for T1ρ/T2 values and cartilage thickness *** Eleven areas in MRI including normal or near normal cartilage thickness were selected. The corresponding histopathological sections demonstrated mild to moderate osteoarthritis(OA). There was no significant difference in cartilage thickness in MRI between control and advanced OA samples [medial distal condyle, P = 0.461;medial posterior condyle(MPC), P = 0.352; lateral distal condyle, P = 0.654; lateral posterior condyle, P = 0.550],suggesting arthritic specimens were morphologically similar to normal or early staged degenerative *** T2 and T1ρ values from the MPC were significantly higher among the patients with advanced OA(P= 0.043). For remaining condylar samples there was no statistical difference in T2 and T1ρ values between cases and controls but there was a trend towards higher values in advanced OA patients. Successful fracture healing requires the simultaneous regeneration of both the bone and vasculature;mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are directed to replace the bone tissue, while endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) form the new vasculature that supplies blood to the fracture site. In the elderly, the healing process is slowed, partly due to decreased regenerative function of these stem and progenitor cells. MSCs from older individuals are impaired with regard to cell number, proliferative capacity, ability to migrate, and osteochondrogenic differentiation potential. The proliferation, migration and function of EPCs are also compromised with advanced age. Although the reasons for cellular dysfunction with age are complex and multidimensional, reduced expression of growth factors, accumulation of oxidative damage from reactive oxygen species, and altered signaling of the Sirtuin-1 pathway are contributing factors to aging at the cellular level of both MSCs and EPCs. Because of these geriatric-specific issues, effective treatment for fracture repair may require new therapeutic techniques to restore cellular function. Some suggested directions for potential treatments include cellular therapies, pharmacological agents, treatments targeting age-related molecular mechanisms, and physical therapeutics. Advanced age is the primary risk factor for a fracture, due to the low bone mass and inferior bone quality associated with aging;a better understanding of the dysfunctional behavior of the aging cell will provide a foundation for new treatments to decrease healing time and reduce the development of complications during the extended recovery from fracture healing in the elderly.

Osteoporosis and People with Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Descriptive Examination of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing Wave 1 Results

Background: People with Down syndrome (DS) are a high “at risk” group to develop osteoporosis. Increased morbidity associated with older age, higher prevalence of Alzheimer dementia, hypotonia, hypogonadism, and thyroid disease, are all features of DS and predispose this cohort to musculoskeletal complications. Methods: The Intellectual Disability Supplement to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA) is a representative study of the aging of adults with intellectual disability in Ireland. The sample (N = 753) included 147 people with DS. Data was gathered on participants’ health status, behavioural health, health screenings and activities of daily living. The prevalence of osteoporosis and related risk factors among people with DS was specifically examined. Findings: Of the 147 participants with DS, 9.4% reported a doctor’s diagnosis of osteoporosis;a much lower figure than prevalence of risk factors would suggest. Predisposing factors identified included higher than general population rates of thyroid disease (37.4%), epilepsy (19.3%), sedentary lifestyle (51.7%) and the maj.rity of the females reporting having experienced menopause (61%). Bone health screening was low at (8%) despite the presence of such high levels of risk factors in this population. Conclusion: Given the risk factor findings and the hidden nature of osteoporosis, underreported incidence among people with Down syndrome seems probable. Further investigations and systematic screening are required.
