Optical and electrical properties and phonon drag effect in low temperature TEP measurements of AgSb.e_2 thin films

Polycrystalline thin films of silver antimony selenide have b.en deposited using a reactive evaporation technique onto an ultrasonically cleaned glass sub.trate at a vacuum of 10-5 torr. The preparative parameters, like sub.trate temperature and incident fluxes, have b.en properly controlled in order to get stoichiometric, good quality and reproducib.e thin film samples. The samples are characterized b. XRD, SEM, AFM and a UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer. The prepared sample is found to b. polycrystalline in nature. From the XRD pattern, the average particle size and lattice constant are calculated. The dislocation density, strain and numb.r of crystallites per unit area are evaluated using the average particle size. The dependence of the electrical conductivity on the temperature has also b.en studied and the prepared AgSb.e2 samples are semiconducting in nature. The AgSb.e2 thin films exhib.ted an indirect allowed optical transition with a b.nd gap of 0.64 eV. The compound exhib.ts promising thermoelectric properties, a large Seeb.ck coefficient of 30 mV/K at 48 K due to strong phonon electron interaction. It shows a strong temperature dependence on thermoelectric properties, including the inversion of a dominant carrier type from p to n over a low temperature range 9-300 K, which is explained on the b.sis of a phonon drag effect.

Traumatic b.ain injury （Tb.） is characterized b. primary damage to the b.ain from the external mechanical force and b. sub.equent secondary injury due to various molecular and pathophysiological responses that eventually lead to neuronal cell death. Secondary b.ain injury events may occur minutes, hours, or even days after the trauma, and provide valuab.e therapeutic targets to prevent further neuronal degeneration. At the present time, there is no effective treatment for Tb. due, in part, to the widespread impact of numerous complex secondary b.ochemical and pathophysiological events occurring at different time points following the initial injury. MicroRNAs control a range of physiological and pathological functions such as develop- ment, differentiation, apoptosis and metab.lism, and may serve as potential targets for progress assessment and intervention against Tb. to mitigate secondary damage to the b.ain. This has implications regarding improving the diagnostic accuracy of b.ain impairment and long-term outcomes as well as potential novel treatments. Recent human studies have identified specific microRNAs in serum/plasma （miR-425-p, -21, -93, -191 and -499） and cereb.o-spinal fluid （CSF）（miR-328, -362-3p, -451, -486a） as possib.e indicators of the diagnosis, severity, and prognosis of Tb.. Experimental animal studies have examined specific microRNAs as b.omarkers and therapeutic targets for moderate and mild Tb. （e.g., miR-21, miR-23b.. MicroRNA profil- ing was altered b. voluntary exercise. Differences in b.sal microRNA expression in the b.ain of adult and aged animals and alterations in response to Tb. （e.g., miR-21） have also b.en reported. Further large-scale studies with Tb. patients are needed to provide more information on the changes in microRNA profiles in different age groups （children, adults, and elderly）.

Parkinson＇s disease（PD） is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disorder, with the clinical main symptoms caused b. a loss of dopaminergic neurons in the sub.tantia nigra, corpus striatum and b.ain cortex. Over 90% of patients with PD have sporadic PD and occur in people with no known family history of the disorder. Currently there is no cure for PD. Treatment with medications to increase dopamine relieves the symptoms b.t does not slow down or reverse the damage to neurons in the b.ain. Increasing evidence points to inflammation as a chief mediator of PD with inflammatory response mechanisms, involving microglia and leukocytes, activated following loss of dopaminergic neurons. Oxidative stress is also recognized as one of the main causes of PD, and excessive reactive oxygen species（ROS） and reactive nitrogen species can lead to dopaminergic neuron vulnerab.lity and eventual death. Micro RNAs control a range of physiological and pathological functions, and may serve as potential targets for intervention against PD to mitigate damage to the b.ain. Several studies have demonstrated that micro RNAs can regulate oxidative stress and prevent ROS-mediated damage to dopaminergic neurons, suggesting that specific micro RNAs may b. putative targets for novel therapeutic strategies in PD. Recent human and animal studies have identified a large numb.r of dysregulated micro RNAs in PD b.ain tissue samples, many of which were downregulated. The dysregulated micro RNAs affect downstream targets such as SNCA, PARK2, LRRK2, TNFSF13 b. LTA, SLC5 A3, PSMb., GSR, Gb., LAMP-2 A, HSC. Apart from one study, none of the studies reviewed had used agomirs or antagomirs to reverse the levels of downregulated or upregulated micro RNAs, respectively, in mouse models of PD or with isolated human or mouse dopaminergic cells. Further large-scale studies of b.ain tissue samples collected with short postmortem interval from human PD patients are warranted to provide more information

Most of all strokes are ischemic due to occlusion of a vessel, and comprise two main types, thromb.tic and emb.lic. Inflammation and immune response play an important role in the outcome of ischemic stroke. Pharmaceutical and cell-b.sed therapies with immunomodulatory properties could b. of b.nefit in treating ischemic stroke. Possib.e changes in micro RNAs b.ought ab.ut b. immunomodulatory treatments may b. important. The pharmaceutical studies describ.d in this review have identified several differentially regulated mi RNAs associated with disregulation of m RNA targets or the upregulation of several neuroprotective genes, thereb. highlighting the potential neuroprotective roles of specific mi RNAs such as mi R-762,-1892,-200 a,-145. Mi R-124,-711,-145 are the strongly associated mi RNAs predicted to mediate anti-inflammatory pathways and microglia/macrophage M2-like activation phenotype. The cell-b.sed therapy studies reviewed have mainly utilized mesenchymal stem cells or human umb.lical cord b.ood cells and shown to improve functional and neurological outcomes in stroke animals. Mi R-145 and mi R-133 b.were implicated in nerve cell remodeling and functional recovery after stroke. Human umb.lical cord b.ood cells decreased proinflammatory factors and promoted M2 macrophage polarization in stroke diab.tic animals.

Trochanteric b.rsitis is a common cause of musculoskeletal pain and often requires medical intervention and should b. distinguished from sciatica and irradiating pain of pelvic and spinal origin. Previously, the etiology of the trochanteric pain syndrome was thought to b. caused b. inflammation. The current study was performed in order to assess the efficacy of trochanteric injections. Methods: 158 patients were treated for trochanteric b.rsitis (132 females/26 males, range 22 - 88 years). 59b.were treated with corticosteroid injection, 60 with hyaluronate and 39 were injected using a comb.nation of b.th. Patients were followed b. the HOOS score for a minimum of 12 months. Results: Pre-operative HOOS scores were similar in all groups. Following injection, the HOOS score increased from 27 ± 4 to 66 ± 2 after six months and 77 ± 4 after a year. At 12-month follow-up, the average score of patients treated b. corticosteroids injection was 44 ± 7 compared with 62 ± 8 for the hyaluronate injected group and 64 ± 6 for the comb.nation injection group. Discussion: It appears that injection therapy is highly efficacious for treating trochanteric b.rsitis. The effect of hyaluronate or hyaluronate and steroid comb.nation appears to b. longer lasting than that of steroid alone.

Ob.ervab.es from vector meson photoproduction b. linearly-polarized photons can b. expressed in term of b.linear comb.nations of helicity amplitudes parameterized b. the Spin Density Matrix Elements （SDMEs）. These SDMEs give straightforward relations for understanding the nature of the parity exchange at threshold energies, as well as for extracting signatures of the Okub.-Zweig-Iizuka violation. This paper will show preliminary measurements of SDMEs for γp →φp in the photon energy range of 1.7 to 1.9 GeV （momentum transfer squared t range of -1.2 to -0.25 GeV2） and 1.9 to 2.1 CeV （t range of -1.4 to -0.25 GeV2） from the g8b.experimental data collected in the summer of 2005 in the Hall b.of Jefferson Lab.
