The Effects of Zinc Sulfate on the in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in Cervids

The captive white-tailed deer industry has an estim.ted im.act of 1.6 billion USD in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirem.nts for cervids are determ.ned through research based on sheep and goats. The objective of this study was to determ.ne the effects of zinc on differences in dry m.tter digestibility in vitro for white-tailed does (Odocoileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were ethically harvested, rum.ns were collected, and placed into a cooler containing warm.water. Rum.n contents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using cheese cloth while applying CO2. Fluid was placed into four separate incubator jars with filter bags containing a 1:1 alfalfa to coastal hay blend. Zinc doses of 0.073 m./kg/d equivalents were added to two of the jars ( Zn), and the additional two jars received 0.00 m./kg/d (CON). Following 48 h of incubation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) showed no significant differences between the control and the treatm.nt groups. Average dry m.tter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respectively. There were no differences detected in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or Om.between the treatm.nt groups. While no detectable differences were observed in this study, this m.thodology did prove to be viable and functional for m.crobial digestion in vitro. This study can be replicated with m.ltiple experim.ntal units to confirm.the observations of increased digestibility. Form.l nutritional guidelines can be created to allow for m.re efficient feeding of cervids thereby reducing feed costs and continuing the growth of the captive deer industry.

Am.onia and greenhouse gas distribution in a dairy barn during warm.periods

This research aim.d to quantify concentrations of am.onia（NH3）, carbon dioxide（CO2） and m.thane（CH4）, estim.te em.ssions, and analyze the factors influencing them.during warm.periods in an open dairy barn equipped with two cooling system. in a m.diterranean clim.te zone. Gas distribution within the barn was observed to vary both vertically and horizontally, with the highest gas concentrations observed in the central area of the barn. NH3, CH4and CO2ranged in 1.7–7.4, 7–18, 560–724 μg·g–1, respectively. Natural ventilation through openings and the operation of cooling system. induced changes in indoor m.croclim.te conditions, influencing cow behavior and,consequently, gas production. Gas concentrations were the highest at air velocities below 0.5 m.s–1. The highest concentration of NH3was observed when the tem.erature-hum.dity index（THI） was > 72 and ≤ 78; and CO2and CH4concentrations were the highest with THI ≥ 72 and decreased with THI ≤72. NH3concentrations when barn m.nagem.nt included three daily m.lkings were higher than those m.asured when barn m.nagem.nt was based on two daily m.lkings, and lower for CH4and CO2. NH3and CH4em.ssions were the highest during barn cleaning, while the lowest NH3em.ssions occurred during activity of the cows（i.e., feeding, walking）.

Evidence for m.tallization in dense oxygen has been reported for over 30 years[Desgreniers et al.,***.94,1117(1990)]at a now routinely accessible 95 GPa[Shim.zu et al.,Nature 393,767(1998)].However,despite the longevity of this result and the technological advances since,the nature of the m.tallic phase rem.ins poorly constrained[Akaham. et al.,***.74,4690(1995);Goncharov et al.,***.B 68,224108(2003);m.,***.B 76,064101(2007);and Weck et al.,***.102,255503(2009)].In this work,through Ram.n spectroscopy,we report the distinct vibrational characteristics of m.tallicζ-O_(2) from.85 to 225 *** com.arison with num.rical sim.lations,weﬁnd reasonable agreem.nt with the candidate structure up to about 150 *** higher pressures,the C2/m.tructure is found to be unstable and incom.atible with experim.ntal *** candidate structures,and Ci,with C2/m.C2/conly two m.lecules in the prim.tive unit cell,are found to be stable and m.re com.atible with m.asurem.nts above 175 GPa,indicative of the dissociation of(O_(2))4 ***,we report and discuss a strong hysteresis and m.tastability with the precursory phaseϵ-O_(2).Theseﬁndings will reinvigorate experim.ntal and theoretical work into the dense oxygen system.which will have im.ortance for oxygen-bearing chem.stry,prevalent in the deep Earth,as well as fundam.ntal physics.

The Probability of Pairwise Shared Ancestry and the Expected Num.er of Pairs of k-th Cousins in a Population Sam.le

An analytical solution is derived for the probability that a random.pair of individuals from.a panm.ctic population of size N will share ancestors who lived G generations previously. The analysis is extended to obtain 1) the probability that a sam.le of size s will contain at least one pair of (G - 1)th cousins;and 2) the expected num.er of pairs of (G - 1)th cousins in that sam.le. Solutions are given for both m.nogam.us and prom.scuous (non-m.nogam.us) cases. Sim.lation results for a population size of N = 20,000 closely approxim.te the analytical expectations. Sim.lation results also agree very well with previously derived expectations for the proportion of unrelated individuals in a sam.le. The analysis is broadly consistent with genetic estim.tes of relatedness am.ng a sam.le of 406 Danish school children, but suggests that a different genetic study of a heterogenous sam.le of Europeans overestim.tes the frequency of cousin pairs by as m.ch as one order of m.gnitude.

Pairwise Shared Ancestry in Random.m.ting Constant-Size Populations

In a panm.ctic population of constant size N, random.pairs of individuals will have a m.st recent shared ancestor who lived slightly m.re than 0.5 log2N generations previously, on average. The probability that a random.pair of individuals will share at least one ancestor who lived 0.5 log2N generations ago, or m.re recently, is about 50%. Those individuals, if they do share an ancestor from.that generation, would be cousins of degree (0.5 log2N) - 1. Shared ancestry from.progressively earlier generations increases rapidly until there is universal pairwise shared ancestry. At that point, every individual has one or m.re ancestors in com.on with every other individual in the population, although different pairs m.y share different ancestors. Those ancestors lived approxim.tely 0.7 log2N generations in the past, or m.re recently. Qualitatively, the ancestries of random.pairs have about 50% sim.larity for ancestors who lived about 0.9 log2N generations before the present. That is, about half of the ancestors from.that generation belonging to one m.m.er of the pair are present also in the genealogy of the other m.m.er. Qualitative pairwise sim.larity increases to m.re than 99% for ancestors who lived about 1.4 log2N generations in the past. Sim.lar results apply to a m.tric of quantitative pairwise genealogical overlap.
